Preparing for July 5th Day of Fasting and Prayer for Revival
2 Chronicles 7:14 provides an outline for revival. The first step is for God’s people to humble themselves. So this week, we are examining our selves for any pride that may be in our lives and any area where we have not humbled ourselves before God.
Isaiah 57:15 – Humility before Revival
For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,
who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly,
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Recognizing God’s Holiness
If we are going to experience revival, we must completely humble ourselves before God. Then we need to see ourselves in relation to a Holy and righteous God. Israel and Judah turned their backs on God and chose to worship idols of false gods instead. By the time Isaiah came on the scene, they had long forgotten the Living God who called them out of Egypt. So God re-introduces who He is to them. In doing so, He uses three phases that shows He is a Holy God:
- “the One who is high and lifted up,” = represents God’s majesty and power over all the universe
- “who inhabits eternity,” = God does not exist within time as we do. He always was, always is, and always will be.
- “whose name is Holy.” = exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness.
America is also guilty of turning our back on God and He wants to reintroduce Himself to us. Spend some time meditating on the three phrases above and reacquaint yourself with the holiness of God.
Where the Holy God dwells
God, of course, dwells in heaven. But He is also omnipresent and He is everywhere all the time. Psalm 139 tells us there is no where we can go where God is not there.
However, in Isaiah 57:15 we see another place where our Holy God dwells. In this verse, we find that He is with the person who is lowly in spirit and contrite. This is a humble person. On the other hand, a person full of pride, has no room or need for God. But the humble person is able to recognize their own un-holiness compared to the righteous and Holy God. The result is a broken and contrite heart that is ready for a Holy God to breathe a revival into it.
King David was guilt of adultery and murder, yet God called him a man after God’s own heart. The reason was because David was always grieved by sin and repented from it. He didn’t offer up excuses or try to compare his level of sin with someone else’s. Instead he came to God with a broken heart and admitted his guilt and sought God’s forgiveness.
Pride is a barricade to Revival
Pride is one of our biggest problems and it serves as a barricade to revival. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 21:4 says, “Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin.” Pride was the sin that changed the angel, Lucifer, into Satan. Listen to the words in Ezekiel 28 that describe this angel turned devil: “Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you.” America has become a proud nation. When pride sets in, we no longer see a need for God. If we want to see a revival, then we need humble hearts bowed before God.
God’s purpose for dwelling with the humble
The last part of Isaiah 57:15 says that God dwells with the humble so He can revive their heart and spirit. So if you’re feeling depleted or that God is somewhere far off, take some time and examine yourself for any pride or un-humbled areas of your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal these areas to you and then quickly confess and repent. If we long God to revive our hearts and spirit, then we have to be humble.

What We Must Do to See Revival
There is a reason that humbling ourselves is the first requirement in 2 Chronicles 7:14. If we do not humble ourselves, the we will not do the other requirements. A proud heart will not pray because they have no need of God. It will not seek God because it’s too busy seeking it’s own way. A proud heart will not turn from their wicked ways because pride and stubbornness usually go hand-in-hand and the proud heart will not see anything wrong with how they are living.
If we want to see revival in America, then God’s people must humble themselves.
