Forgiveness through the Eyes of a Sinner

If you have ever experienced forgiveness from a friend or family member then you know what forgiveness feels like. You understand the peace that returns and the restoration of the relationship.  The more we wronged that person, the more grateful we are of the forgiveness they extended to us. In Luke 7, we find a woman who sinned much express her thankfulness for the forgiveness of her sins. As we look at this story, we see forgiveness through the eyes of a sinner.

We are all sinners in need of forgiveness

Every one of us sins and we are all in need of God’s forgiveness. Without His forgiveness, we are unable to find the peace our hearts long for. It doesn’t matter whether there is only one sin in our entire lifetime or a million. It doesn’t matter if our sins or just “little” sins or if there is a whole closet full of “big” sins. God doesn’t put quantity or size to our sin. One sin – of any size – and we become a sinner.  Yet, the more we recognize our own sinfulness and our need for a Savior, the more precious Jesus becomes to us and the more love we have for Him.

The person with a closet full of big sins will understand God’s grace and forgiveness more than the person with just one little sin. As a result, the person with the “big” sins will, in return, demonstrate more love to the God who forgave him. For example, if two people stand before the same judge, one with a speeding ticket for two miles over the speed limit and the other guilty traffic homicide and both receive forgiveness for their crimes and released – who is likely to feel the most gratitude?

A sinner who came face to face with her own sinfulness and found forgiveness

The woman in Luke 7 who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair and anointed his head with oil had come face to face with her own sinfulness. She knew the extent of every sin she had ever committed and knew she needed forgiveness. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus to dinner at his home had still to get passed his pious, ritualistic mentality to see his sinfulness. The woman’s actions demonstrated true repentance and because of her faith, she found forgiveness and salvation. As a result, she could “go in peace” (vs. 50). The Pharisee, however, continued lost in his sin and chose religious rituals over grace and forgiveness. He could not understand the gratitude of the forgiven woman, nor could he understand the peace and forgiveness she had found in Jesus.

Is there anything in your life today that you need to seek God’s forgiveness for? Do you long for peace and restoration of your relationship with Him? Ask Him to forgive you now.

God, thank you for your forgiveness and grace. Because of your forgiveness, we can live in peace with you. Help us to recognize quickly when sin creeps in and to seek your forgiveness once again.

The Misadventures of Parenting Mishaps

It can be easy to look at Israel and wonder how they got so far away from the God who brought them out of Egypt and into them the Promised Land. A nation chosen by God to bring the Savior of the World into the world. The very first generation after Joshua’s death is recorded in the Bible as not knowing the Lord. How can that be? We can blame peer pressure or a number of other things, but when a generation gets derailed from following God, we can’t ignore the possible parenting mishaps and missed opportunities of teaching our children about living lives that honor God.

Results of Parenting Mishaps: A Generation that does not know God

When we look across our globe and the nations around it – do we see a generation that does not know God? When a nation falls apart and becomes riddled with crime, disease, greed, selfishness, sexual immorality, racism, and hate, it become easy to blame the generation who is living in such a way. However, it isn’t just their fault. Yes, they make choices and are responsible for those choices. But we also need to examine the parents who raised that generation.

In Judges 2:10 we find this generation of people who didn’t even know God. Their parents had turned to idolatry and forgot the God of Israel who brought them out of Egypt and all the miracles He had done. The only way this generation could have not known God is because their parents neglected to tell them.

The Parenting Mishaps of relying on church or school to teach our children

As parents, we cannot rely on school or church to teach our children. God gave us — the parents — the responsibility for teaching our children about Him. There will be times when parents raise their children as God instructs and a child rebels from that. Each person is responsible for choosing the path in life they will take. Yet God expects that parents make every single moment a teaching moment about God.

When they discover a new bug, we teach them about creation. When they are hurt by a friend, we teach them about God’s grace and forgiveness. And when they tell a lie, we teach them the 10 Commandments. Yes, church is important – but nothing compares to what our children learn at home. It’s also important to remember that children learn more by what they see than what they hear. So if you teach them lying is wrong, don’t tell a lie. If you tell them drinking alcohol is wrong, then don’t drink alcohol. If you teach them that adultery is wrong, don’t be guilty of adultery. And if you teach them that saying certain words is bad, then don’t be guilty of speaking those words.

The cost of parenting mishaps

What is the cost of not parenting well? We reap a generation that does not know God and the works that He has done. We reap the world we are living in today. A world full of crime, disease, greed, selfishness, sexual immorality, and hate. As a parent, are you taking every opportunity to teach your children about God and how He expects us to live? Are you teaching them about His love for them? Are you living out an example for them to follow? How would our world be different today if we as parents took the responsibility of raising children as God expects seriously? We can change the world by changing how we parent our children.

God, help us as parents to diligently teach our children about you so that there is never a generation that rises up and does not know you. Show us every opportunity to teach our children about you. Help us to be examples for them to follow.

What God Requires

God made some big promises to the Children of Israel. As His chosen people, if they committed to obeying God’s commandments, then He would fulfill His promises. He also gave them plenty of warnings that if they did not obey His commandments, then there would be steep punishments that follow. What did God require of them in order to reap His blessings? They were to fear (reverence/respect) God, walk in His way, love and serve Him with all their heart and soul, and to keep his commandments and statutes. What God required of Israel, He still requires for His children today.

If we want God’s blessings, we must live by what God requires

We can’t go through life living any way we want and still expect God to send His blessings. Just as God would punish Israel for not obeying Him and keeping Him as their only God, He will punish us too. As a nation, we do not live the way God requires. We have become a nation full of pride and rebellion against God. We’re a nation that rivals with Sodom and Gomorrah. American can be well described as “they have all turned to their own way, each to his own gain, one and all.” (Isaiah 56:11) The problem with “turning our own way” can be found in Proverbs 21:2, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.” What looks right to us, doesn’t always look right to God because God knows the intent of our heart.

Another problem with “turning our own way” is that we refuse to acknowledge God or the way He expects us to live. We change our laws to suit how we want to live and throw out God’s laws and commandments. But changing our laws does not negate God’s laws. When we stand before God to give an account for our lives, you can be sure the laws you will be judged by will by His laws and not the man-made laws of this sin-filled nation.

What God requires is for our good

It’s important to note that God ended these verses with, “which I command thee this day for thy good.” God’s commandments and statutes are for our good. God only has our best interest in mind so everything God does is for us. His laws are not to make life boring – but so that we can live life to the fullest within the bounds that He created.

God, just as Israel failed in keeping your expectations, so we fail every day. Forgive us and give us a desire to live within the bounds that You have set in Your commandments. Help us to reverence You, to walk in Your way, to love and serve You with all of our heart and soul and to keep your commandments and statutes.

A Parent’s Responsibility

As Christian parents, is it enough to take your kids to church every Sunday? Absolutely not. We need to find every possible opportunity to teach them about God. We need to start them at a young age of reading their Bible every day and learning how to pray. They need to lean about God through the examples that we set – how we spend our money, the words we use and the tones in which they are said, what we watch on TV, and how we react in rush hour traffic. The need to see mom and dad modeling a Christian marriage. Every moment of every day. That is the parenting responsibility God expects from us.

The Responsibility to diligently teach them the ways of God

In Deuteronomy God said we have the responsibility to diligently teach our children the ways of God. We should be teaching them at home, on the road, walking through the park, as they lay down to sleep each night, and the first thing when they wake up in the morning. God expects us to teach them to recognize God’s blessing and to hear His “still, small voice.” We should teach them about tithing and how to be servant leaders. We should teach them to bear the image of Christ and how to be salt and light in the world. God expect us to teach them to love their neighbors – no matter who they are and without prejudice. We should help them memorize Bible verses to hide in their hearts. We should teach them songs that honor and glorify God and teach them how to thank Him for everything.

The responsibility to leave a lasting impression of God

Did you notice the word that is used here for the responsibility we have to teach our children about God?  We are to diligently teach our children. Another translations says, “Impress them on your children…” When does something leave an impression? Let’s say you have some cast iron chairs on your deck or porch that have a pattern on them. If you sit on that chair for even a few moments, it will leave an impression on your backside, but quickly fade once you get up. But if you sit on it for 60 minutes, you’re going to be walking around with an impression on your backside for quite some time. The longer you sit, the greater impression it leaves.

God wants us to spend time with him and his Word so that he may leave a lasting impression on us. The more time we spend with God’s Word the greater impression it leaves on us. It is an impression of God’s love, faithfulness, power and promises. An impression that reminds us of just how valuable our relationship with Christ actually is. When we model that to our children, it will leave a lasting impression on them.

A Father’s responsibility

For fathers, you have the opportunity and responsibility of leading your family and growing them spiritually. But good spiritual leadership doesn’t happen by accident. You have the responsibility to make a deliberate investment of yourself into the people in your home. It begins with your own spiritual leadership. You cannot invest into the spiritual development of your family if you are not first investing in your own. Husbands and fathers only lead well when they have paid careful attention to their character and ensure they are both teaching and modeling Godly character.

You need to remember that they know you better than any other person, so you won’t be able to hide even small character flaws from them. Your life is their model, and they will be following your lead. To lead your family intentionally, you need to have a plan for yourself. Ask yourself the question: “Do I have a plan for my development and growth as a man, husband, and father?” If not, you better get one, because your leadership is only as good as your plan—and subsequently how you work that plan.

A Husband’s Responsibility

As a husband, you also have a God-given responsibility in your relationship with your wife. Everything you do to nurture your relationship with your wife will have a direct impact on the overall health of your entire family. How you love your wife, honor her, respect her, listen to her, and forgive her not only teaches your children how to treat others, but it also prepares them for their own future marriage relationship. Your sons are learning everything about how to treat a woman by watching you and how you treat your wife. Your daughters are learning about how a man should treat them. Ask yourself: “Do I want my children to have the same kind of relationship with their spouse as I do with my wife?”

A Wife’s responsibility

As a wife, you also have a responsibility in your relationship with your husband. Everything you do to nurture your relationship with your husband will have a direct impact on your entire family. How you love your husband, honor him, respect him, submit to him, listen to him, and forgive him, teaches your children about God’s design for a Christian marriage. Your daughters are watching you and learning these vital relationship skills that she will carry into her own marriage relationship one day. Momma’s, ask yourself: “Do I want my daughter to have the same kind of marriage relationship with her spouse as I do with my husband?”

Proverbs 31:10-31 describes what a godly wife and mother looks like. Verses 26-28 of that passage says, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

The Investment of Parenting Well

Parenting is tough. It’s hard work. It takes investing time, effort, and energy. That can be hard after a long day at work – but it’s an investment that has lifelong dividends. Even simple investments in the life of your children will demonstrate your love for them and show them they are important to you. In the dairy of Winston Churchill’s father, he penned, “Spent the day fishing with Winston. A day wasted.” Whenever we invest time into our children, it is never wasted time. Investing our time into their lives is a responsibility and our children long for us to just spend time with them – on their level – investing into them each and every day.

We have the responsibility of having an invested relationship with our children

Leading our children requires us to have an invested relationship with them. That means we can’t sit on the couch with the remote or game controller in our hand and issue commands or ignore the kids. Their life is directly impacted by the investment of your time. Be present with them in pursuits that matter to them.

Engage casually with them. Take them for one-on-one dinners. Ask them for prayer requests and pray for them and with them. Extend grace to them when needed. Show them how to do something new, such as building something together, working on a car or a home repair project together. Maybe your something new looks more like teaching a craft or hobby such as crochet, sewing, baking, etc. Or refurbishing a piece of antique furniture together. Have a significant, age appropriate talk with them on a controversial topic and be sure you are showing them in God’s Word what God has to say on the topic. From time to time, ask them about their “high and low of the day” and discover their challenges and disappointments.

When we fail in our responsibility

If you find that spending time with them feels like wasted time or when you fail in your responsibility to teach your children the ways of God, they are likely to spend their entire lives trying to prove their worth to you or trying to earn your love and respect. They will feel unloved, unwanted. They will turn to their peers to attempt to find their self-worth, rather than learning from you that their self worth is found in God.

So, is the non-verbal message you are sending to them saying they are waste of your time or that they are valued and loved and worth your time? Just as Jesus invested in his disciples by spending time with them gave them the skills they needed for the work He was calling them to do, so your spending time with your children will prepare and equip them for the life they will have.

The responsibility to use our mistakes as teaching opportunities

Every parent messes up at times. But even the “mess ups” become opportunities for teaching children about God’s grace and forgiveness. It also empowers them with the skills for extending grace and forgiveness to others. Don’t allow your pride to keep you from saying, “Son, I was wrong. I need you to forgive me.” Then use your “mess up” as grounds for teaching them what God says and about how God forgives us. When you become vulnerable and real with your children by sharing your failures with them, they will soak up your values, beliefs, and faith.

No matter the age of your children, the years you have them at home to influence them are short. Before you know they will be grown adults and stepping out into the world on their own. You will never get those years back. You will never get a “do over.” So invest in them by modeling Godly behavior, developing them spiritually, and investing your time with them.

God, thank you for the blessing of our children. Bringing them up in the admonition of the Lord is hard work, but with Your help, we commit to raising them in the full knowledge of who you are. Help us to parent them well, teaching them diligently about your commandments and love for them. Help us to model obedience to Your Word  as we diligently train them every moment of every day in every circumstance.

New in the Teespring Store: The Prayer of Blessing

We’ve added a new canvas print to the Teespring Store.

God instructed the Israelite priests to pray the prayer of blessing every day over the people. The prayer is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Hang the canvass in your home or carry the mug, tote bag, or water bottle and let the prayer of blessing impact all those who you meet throughout the day.

We’ve also put this design on a poster, coffee mug, a stainless steel water bottle, phone cases, and a few other products.

John 3:14-15. Saved by Faith

In Numbers 21, the Children of Israel were once again discourage and spoke against God and Moses, saying, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” So God sent fiery serpents and they bit the people and many of them died. When they repented, God told Moses to make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole and whoever looked at it, would live. It wasn’t the bronze serpent that brought about healing. It was the people’s faith in God and his provision that brought healing.

John uses this Old Testament story as a metaphor for Jesus’ future crucifixion. Just as those in Moses’ day looked upon the bronze serpent and were healed, those who look in faith to Jesus who was lifted up on a cross to pay our sin debt will be healed of their sins and have eternal life. Just like it wasn’t the actual bronze serpent that brought healing and life, looking upon a crucifix will not save us from our sins. It was the people’s faith in God that healed them of the snake bites and it is our faith in Jesus that gives us eternal life.

Just as those in Moses’ day looked upon the bronze serpent and were healed, those who look in faith to Jesus who was lifted up on a cross to pay our sin debt will be healed of their sins and have eternal life. — click to tweet

This faith in Jesus starts with believing that He is who He said He is – the only begotten Son of God. As such Jesus is fully God. While He lived on earth, He was both 100% God and 100% man. The next step of faith is to realize that Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life while on earth, which makes it possible for Him to pay our sin debt. If He had sinned even once, then we would have no hope of salvation. The next step is to realize our lostness in sin. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” There is not one single person, other than Jesus, who has lived a sinless life. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages or penalty for our sin is death but that the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. The gift God gave us was allowing His only Son to suffer the torture of being beaten, mocked, scourged, and crucified in our place. Jesus paid our sin debt. The next step of faith is to believe that Jesus did rise from the dead three days later. If Jesus were still in a tomb, then death and the grave is not defeated and there is no eternal life. Today, Jesus is alive and sits at the right hand of God waiting for the day that God tells Him to come to earth again – but this time as a triumphant king. The last step of faith is believing that the blood Jesus shed on the cross will cleanse you from all unrighteousness. There is absolutely nothing you can do to earn salvation. It is only by faith and through God’s gracious gift that salvation is possible. For those who accept these truths by faith and come to Jesus and confess they are a sinner and ask for His forgiveness and ask Him to be the Lord of their life, then that person will have eternal life. Jesus was lifted up for you – will you by faith accept the eternal life He offers you?
