When emotional distance sets in, one or both marriage partners end up feeling lonely. As a result, they will typically begin to pursue other things to fill in the gaping hole that loneliness leaves behind. Things such as caring for children, hobbies, church activities, etc. The other danger of emotional distance is filling the loneliness by pursuing other people, such as spending more time with friends or having an affair. Discuss any emotional distance in your relationship. In what ways are you contributing to emotional distance in your relationship? What is needed to bridge the gap and build closeness? What steps can you take to avoid emotional distance?
