Ezekiel 36:26

Ezekiel 36 26

The Israelites had a history of turning away from God and worshiping false gods. Over and over again in the Bible we see them going after the idols of the nations around them. By the time of Ezekiel and Jeremiah God had had enough and he brought judgement on the nations of both Israel and Judah via the Assyrians and Babylonians who conquered Israel and Judah, burned the city of Jerusalem, destroyed the temple, and carried of many of the people to be scattered throughout the lands of Assyria and Babylon. But through the prophets, God promised that a remnant of people would remain and those taken into captivity would return to the land of promise after 70 years. But before they could return, they needed new hearts.

In Deuteronomy 30:6-8, Moses warned the nation what would become of them if they went after idols and what it would take to bring their hearts back toward God. Moses said, The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love Him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live. The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. Then you will again obey Him and follow all His commands I am giving you today.” Now in the book of Ezekiel, God says that He will give his people a new heart and put a new spirit within them. Why did they need a new heart? Their hearts had become hardened – as hard as stone. Idolatry was so prevalent in the world around them that it was the norm. Whenever any sin becomes the “norm” we become desensitized to the shame and regret of the sin, as well as to the Holy Spirit convicting us. (click to tweet) For Israel and Judah, it was worshiping false gods. Today, in America, we have become desensitized to sexual relations outside of marriage, of teens getting pregnant, of abortion, and now we are quickly becoming desensitized as a nation to sexual preferences and how to define marriage. We need new hearts and new spirits just as much as the nations of Israel and Judah. But it takes God circumcising our hearts so we can live in obedience.

Circumcision of the heart is a radical new creation necessary to break our bondage and cycle of sin through the act of God that we call regeneration in which He imparts new spiritual life to dead hearts. (click to tweet) This is where we get the saying “born again” from. (Hover of each verse to read it. John 3:3-8,Ephesians 2:4-5, Colossians 2:13, James 1:17-18, 1 Peter 1:3). More than any other prophet, Ezekiel emphasizes the Holy Spirit’s role in regeneration.

When we are physically born, we inherited a sin nature. When we are “born again” it is a spiritual, holy, heavenly birth that results in our being made alive spiritually. Before that moment we are spiritually “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).  But when we place our faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit makes us alive (regenerated) by Christ’s atonement for our sins.

At the moment of our physical birth, we enter the worldly realm and our inherited sin nature is already at work and our natural tendency is to seek after worldly things. Upon our spiritual birth and being made spiritually alive, we enter the heavenly realm and we begin to see and hear and seek after divine things. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.

Regeneration is the work of God. Just as we can’t make ourselves alive physically, we also can’t make ourselves alive spiritually. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift.” Because of God’s great love, His rich grace, and His abundant mercy, our rebirth is a free gift from God to us. If before salvation we are “dead in our trespasses and sins,” then we would not have any hope to becoming reconciled to God because there has never been anyone who could raise themselves from the dead. Ephesians 1:19-20 tells us that it was God who raised Jesus from the dead and it is that same power that makes the regeneration of sinners possible when the sinner humbly comes by faith, acknowledging their sin and need of a Savior and asks God to forgive them of their sins and cleanse them from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). There is no amount of “good works” can regenerate the heart. Keeping all the laws of the commandments is not enough to regenerate a heart. Romans 3:20 tells us, “By works of the law no human being will be justified in God’s sight.”

Because of God’s holiness and righteousness, we as sinful beings cannot stand in His presence. Therefore regeneration is not optional – its required. When Jesus talked to Nicodemus, twice Jesus said that man must be “born again” to be able to see kingdom of God. (John 3:3 and 7).

As a result of regeneration, we can have peace with God, new life, and become eternally sons and daughters of God, but only when we come by faith in Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead three days later. Because He paid the price for our sins, He is the only person who can offer a cure and a hope of escape from our total depravity to sin that we were physically born with and the consequences of our sin. (Click to tweet) The lost do not need renovating. They do not need to worry about priorities  and getting reorganized before coming to Christ.  The lost need rebirth. America needs rebirth. Some Christians need to rediscover their “rebirth” and learn to once again love God with all their heart and soul so that they has individuals and we as a nation will live. It isn’t that these Christians need to be “reborn” yet again. Once we have been regenerated and reborn, that can’t be undone. But for one reason or another, some Christian have stopped searching for God with all their heart. They become complacent. They stop reading their Bible and praying and so they don’t hear God speak to them. Because they are not actively communicating with God, their spiritual life becomes dried up. It’s time for Christians all over the world to return to the well of living water by seeking God with all their heart because Jeremiah 29:13 tells us, You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. Just as Jesus had a divine appointment with the Woman at the Well, so He has one with you today – right now. Whether you need to be reborn or whether you need to begin searching for Him with all your heart and soul. Dear reader who has not be “reborn,” Jesus longs to meet you and give you living water. Dear Christian reader, Jesus longs to meet with you and fellowship with you – will you search for him with all your heart and soul?

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Learn more about hosting this event at your church or conference site by clicking here.

About the book: The GLMW book contains 365 daily challenges for couples to strengthen their relationships to each other and with God.
