Fasting & Prayer for Revival: A Nation Divided Under God

Today we invite the people of God to join us in fasting and prayer for a revival in America. Beginning at 6 am we will be giving a focus area of prayer for each hour until 10 pm. Please join us each hour in prayer. This is our last hour focusing on repentance. This hour we are interceding for our nation for the division that is within it. We truly are a nation divided under God.

7 pm Revival prayer focus:

This hour we are interceding for our nation that is a nation divided under God. Division is tearing us apart and the root cause of that division is sin – the sin of pride, prejudice, and hate.

Revival begins with God’s people.

1 Corinthians 1:10-12. I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers.

A Class Divided PBS documentary

Nothing has hit home so deeply for me regarding racism and prejudices as an old PBS documentary film that I saw. The title of the documentary was “A Class Divided” (Click on the link to watch the full documentary show on YouTube). During the time our nation was divided and in turmoil following the assignation of Martain Luther King Jr. a third-grade teacher in Iowa stepped up to make a difference.

In response to what was going on in our world during that time, Jane Elliott provided her students with a lesson in discrimination they would never forget. In her lesson, she used the color of eyes and divided the kids by brown eyes and blue eyes. On one day, the brown-eyed kids were treated much like the African American kids of 1968 were treated. The next day the roles were reverse and the kids with blue eyes were treated like the African American kids.

How foolish we are to judge someone based on the color of their eyes or their skin! And how foolish we are to allow something like the color of skin make us a nation divided.

One-of-a-kind you

Each one of us is a unique and glorious creation of God, crafted by his own hand. There is only one mold that made you and once you were made, you’re mold was destroyed. There will never be another person exactly like you (not even if you have an identical twin). And God loves each and every one of us – so much that He sent His only begotten Son into the world to provide a way of redemption for us. You can be black, white, yellow, red, or pick with purple polka dots and God loves you.

I personally believe that God loves colors. If you don’t believe me, just look at a sunset or a rainbow. Or the flowers in a field. How boring life would be without color. Color makes life interesting. And each one of us were placed on this earth by God for this moment in time. The question becomes – what will do with with our moment in time. Do we create of nation that is truly based on equality where all men are created equal? Or have we ever been a nation that truly believed all men are created equal?

We’re all the same
by Julia M. Bruce

In God’s eyes we are not red, yellow, black or white.
We are all the same in His Holy sight.
In the soul where it really counts,
we are all the same must give an account.
Not on the color of our skin or eyes
But how we lived our earthly lives.
Each one of us is not more than a sinner
It is only Christ’s blood that makes us a winner.
So put aside your differences, prejudice and hate
And allow Christ to redeem and give a new eternal fate.
God loves us all equally, no race is better
Jesus died for all and that’s what really matters.

Consequences of a nation divided

In Mark 3:24, Jesus said, “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” Then in the very next verse He said the same thing about a home. If a kingdom and a home that is divided cannot stand, then the same is true for a nation.

God wants us to be united. 1 Peter 3:8 says, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” Paul admonished the Corinthian church “that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10). The path to unity is paved in love. Colossians 3:14 says, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Overcoming a nation divided

In 1965, Jackie DeShannon released a song entitled, “What the World Needs Now.” Perhaps since this was just two years earlier than the PBS documentary, Jackie saw the division that was already at play in America. However, Jesus already knew that love was the answer. He told us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. If we did that, there would be no divisions. We must love others the way Jesus loves them – enough to die for them. When we see people with that kind of worth, we will no longer be a nation divided but we will be “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all – all. That means without partiality to skin color, eye color, hair color, culture, race, or religion.

“The coming revival must begin with a great prayer revival. It is in the closet, with the door shut, that the sound of abundant revival will be first heard. An increase in the secret prayer of ministers and members will be the sure herald of blessing.”

Andrew Murray

Join us in prayer:

Father, our nation is divided all the way to the core. Not just because of race, but it is divided over religion, political parties, culture, and a plethora of other ways. Oh how we need the love of Jesus in our nation. Father, we ask you to give us hearts that love each other as you love us. Forgive us of prejudices, pride and hate that has divided us. Help us to understand that without Christ we are all the same – sinners bound for eternity in hell. It is only when accept Christ as our Savior that we can stand before you redeemed and cleansed of all sin.

Father, we are here. The people called by your name. Today, we come to you brokenhearted, acknowledging how we, your people, have allowed this nation to turn so far away from you. And today, we ask you to revive our hearts. Revive your Church. Revive our homes, families, and marriages. Move among us. We invite you to be Lord in each one of us.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
