God calls us by name

by Julie Bruce

Is 43 1-2When I think about the fact that God not only knows my name, but he takes the time to call me by my name, I am humbled and overwhelmed that the God who created the universe and holds it all together cares that much about me. My past, your past, whatever it might hold, does not define who I am just as your past does not define who you are. The mistakes I’ve made or bad choices. No matter how many times I’ve fallen. No matter what my current circumstances are or what I’m going through at the moment. No matter what sins I’ve committed. God has never given up on me. He continually calls me by name, pulling me back to Him. He continually forgives all my faults and loves me unconditionally. There is no sin so big that God will not forgive. There is no distance you can run that will out run God. He is the God that created you, a masterpiece of his own no junkpersonal design…a work of art. In those awkward growing up years, my mother gave me a small poster just like this one to remind me that I AM SOMEBODY…cause God don’t make no junk! My friend, I know I am somebody because I am a daughter of the Most High God and he calls me by name.

The fact that He calls me by my name means He knows me. In most world who have kings and queens, you do not get in to see the king if he does not know you. In ancient times, the king could call for your execution just for approaching him and you certainly would not have called him by name. Our Savior and King, however, sits ready for you acknowledge Him and come to Him with what is on your heart. There is nothing you can hide from Him. God knows us…every little detail about us. In Psalm 139, King David wrote,

“Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways.  Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me. This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it. Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me.  If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night”— even the darkness is not dark to You. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to You.  For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and I know this very well. My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began. God, how difficult Your thoughts are for me to comprehend; how vast their sum is! If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with You.” (HCSB)

If that’s not enough to get your praise on, then read the next phrase in the verse… God says, “YOU ARE MINE!” If you have had a time in your life where you recognized your sin and asked Christ to forgive and accepted His free gift of salvation through faith then my friend, God says to you, “YOU ARE MINE!” Because we are His, we know that he will be with us no matter what life brings…the good time, the disappointments, the heartbreaks, the scary times. Every moment of life God is with us.

So no matter what your past looks like or what you are going through right now in this moment or what your future might look like, you can know that God cares…enough to call you by name and declare that you are His. If you have not yet reached that decision of asking Christ to forgive you and be your Savior, God is calling your name too. 2 Peter 3:9 says that God is not “willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” That little word, “all,” includes you! All you have to do is accept by faith the free gift of God’s forgiveness and salvation.

If you are a Christian, than hold your head high…put your crown on. You are a child of the King. He knows your name and calls you His own!
