God Hears Your Prayers

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Does God hear your prayers?

Do you ever wonder if God hears your prayers? God told the prophet, Jeremiah, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which do do not know.” 1 John 5:14 says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” Our confidence comes from asking according to God’s will. We understand and know His will as we develop an intimate relationship with Him through Bible study, Worship, and prayer. If something is in God’s will, then we can know that God hears and answer that prayer.

David had doubts, too

If you’ve ever had doubts (we all have at one time or another) about whether or not God hears our prayers, then you can know that you’re not alone. David, whom God referred to as “a man after my own heart” also had doubts. Listen to him calling out to God in Psalm 22:1-2, which says, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.” Chances are you’ve been in this exact same spot. So here are five verses to help you during these times to bring you back to the promises that God hears us when we pray.

Five Verses that Reassure Us God Hears Our Prayers

1. John 9:31 – “We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.”

2. 1 Peter 3:12 – “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

3. 1 John 5:15 – “And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

4. Jeremiah 29:12-13; “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

5. Psalm 66:17-20 – “I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!”

God Hears and He Invites Us to Call Out To Him

Yes! God hears our prayers, but He also invites us to call out to Him. He is sitting there, just waiting to speak with you today. Longing to hear from you. God doesn’t just want to hear our mile-long wish lists that we want him to grant to us. God hears when we cry out with our sorrows and burdens. And God hears when we cry out in praise and thanksgiving. And God hears when we intercede for someone else. God longs to hear all about our day, our problems, or successes, and our failures.

God hears, but he also invites us to sit in silence and listen

And when you call out to Him, He will answer, but not with just a simple yes, no, or maybe…. Jeremiah 33:3 tells us that God wants to tell you great and incomprehensible things. Sometimes we come to God and cry out, but we never stop to sit in silence before Him to hear what He wants to say to us. As a result, we go around thinking that God doesn’t hear us.

How exciting would our prayer lives be if we sat in silence, listening to God telling us great and incomprehensible things…things we don’t know? What dream would He plant in our heart? How might He call us to serve Him? What new and fresh Word might we get out of the Bible if we sat still long enough to hear Him speak? How might the Holy Spirit direct us to intercede and pray for someone God lays on our heart? What work might God do in your life that would allow you to let go of anger and bitterness and give you the grace to forgive that person that hurt you? Call out Him…He will answer. Sit expectantly waiting for Him to show Himself to you.

The Path to Sin

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires.
