Isaiah 6:8 – Who Will Go?

by Julia Bruce

Isaiah 6 8

In Isaiah 6, Isaiah has a rare opportunity to see God and from his vision we can learn several things:

  • When we come into God’s presence, His glory will cause us to worship Him.
  • When we come into God’s presence, we realize just how unworthy we are.
  • When we come into God’s presence, we are changed and our guilt is removed.
  • When we come into God’s presence and our guilt is removed, we are ready to serve Him.

In verse 1, he writes:

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.”

It says the angels cry out, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” There is only one proper response to coming face to face with God’s glory and that is to worship him. (click to tweet) When God’s glory showed up on the mountain, the Israelites worshiped Him. When His glory showed up in the tabernacle, they worship. When his glory showed up in the temple, they worshiped Him. When His glory showed up and split the Red Sea, they crossed over and worshiped Him. Wherever God’s glory shows up our response is to worship Him. What are your thoughts about going to church? Do you go out of a sense of duty? Or if you are part of the staff, do you go because it’s a paycheck? Do you sit in church without opening your mouth to sing praises to God? Do you sit through the sermon checking your watch to see how much time is left? When you and I come to church, we should anticipate coming into the glory of God and our hearts should fill with praise as we worship Him.

The angels worshiped God, but what was Isaiah’s reaction? What would be your reaction if you found yourself in the holy temple of God and see Him sitting on His throne? Probably the same reaction Isaiah had. He suddenly realizes he is in trouble! Verse 5 says, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” As he stood in the presence of a holy and righteous God, Isaiah realized just how unclean and unworthy he was. You can’t truly recognize who Jesus really is and not recognize how unworthy you are. Rev. Charles C. Morrison said, “The Church is a society of sinners – the only society in the world in which membership is based upon the single qualification that the candidate shall be unworthy of membership.” The apostle Paul said it this way, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.” (1 Timothy 1:15). Every Christian should be aware of how unworthy they are. If not, then they can’t see their need of a Savior. But when we do, then our only response to coming into the holy presence of God would be to praise and worship Him.

There is a natural reaction to recognizing just how unworthy we are – change. After Isaiah realized his own worthiness, one of the seraphim flew over to him with a glowing coal taken from the altar and touched Isaiah’s mouth with it and said:

“Now that this has touched your lips,
your wickedness is removed and your sin is atoned for.”

It is impossible to come into the presence of God and remain unchanged. 1 John 1:7 says that the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin. God took our sin and unworthiness and laid it all on His only Son as He hung on a cross and changes us to being sanctified and justified. Through the filter of Jesus’ blood, God sees us just as if we had never sinned. Our guilt is removed. Our sin is washed away – thrown into the “sea of forgetfulness” (click to tweet) Micah 7:19 says, “He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Psalm 103:12 says, “As far as the east is fro the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” And in Isaiah 43:25, we are told that God will remember our sins no more. As a result we are changed from being unrighteous to righteous.

Lastly, when we come into the presence of God and our guilt is removed, we become ready to serve Him. When you realize His glory, you’ll never be satisfied with just sitting in a pew, checking your watch every few minutes. You’ll never see church as entertainment. You’ll never be concerned with being critical of the songs or the sermon. You’ll never find yourself being judgmental of others at church. And you’ll never be satisfied with letting someone else serve. The result of coming into the presence of God and recognizing His glory is we become so filled with joy and thanksgiving for His forgiveness that we could never be content just sitting while others serve Him. (click to tweet)  Instead, when God asks, “whom shall I send?” we would be jumping up and down with our hand in the air and crying out, “Here I am! Send Me!” (click to tweet) What is your attitude when your church is looking for people to serve?
