Jan 9 Matthew 8 26-27

Life is like twirling a baton, turning handsprings, or eating with chopsticks. It looks easy until you try it!  During the Civil War a Union soldier from Ohio was shot in the arm. His captain saw he was wounded and barked out an order,”Gimme your gun Private, and get to the rear!” The private handed over his rifle and ran toward the north, seeking safety. But after going only about two or three hundred yards, he came upon another skirmish. So he ran to the east, and found himself in another part of the battle. Then he ran west, but encountered more fighting there. Finally he ran back to the front lines shouting “Gimme back my rifle, Cap’n. There ain’t no rear to this battle nowhere!”

When it comes to life, the troubles of the world are all around us, brewing like a storm. They come at us from every direction and they rise up drowning waves in all kinds of ways: an unexpected job loss, death of a loved one, financial problems, a bad medical diagnosis, a child that turns against what he/she has been taught. Regardless of the kind of storm, life is unfair and “there ain’t no rear to this battle nowhere!” You can’t just run away and hide. You have to stay in the fight. However, as Christians, we have Jesus, the creator of the winds and sea who obeys His every command in the boat with us. Just as He was in control of the storm at sea, He is in control of the storm you are facing. Jesus isn’t afraid of the storm. He has every part of your life in His hand and he says to us today, just as he did to the disciples: Why are you afraid? Where is your faith?”
