Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s verse:

Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seats of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

 Meditate and apply:

  • The word “blessed” expresses a sense of happiness, joy, and satisfaction in one’s present circumstances and is the result of trusting and obeying God.
  • We are “blessed” when we seek Godly counsel through God’s Word, pastor, or other Godly Christian rather than those who follow the world’s way. When we are seeking advice to troubling or difficult circumstances, we need to be sure the advice we are seeking aligns with what God says in His Word. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” When we turn to the Lord and His Word and trust Him, He will give us the direction we seek.

  • We are “blessed” when we stand in the light of God’s Word and not in the midst of sinners. This doesn’t mean we avoid them. If we did, they’d not hear about Jesus. It means that we don’t follow their ways, participating in the sin. We don’t adopt their lifestyle as our own. Instead, we need to ask God to change us from the inside out, so that how we act and what we say reflects who He is.

  • We are “blessed” when we do not abide with the scornful. The word ‘seat” means “place of abode.” A scornful person is one who mocks or talks arrogantly. It is the person that is contentious and bitter. Being scornful represents a heart that is calloused. When we allow it, bitterness will enter our hearts. This is why the Bible teaches us in Proverbs 4:23 to “above all else, guard your heart…” so that our hearts will not be weighted down (Luke 21:34).

  • Our delight and happiness comes when we dwell and meditate on God’s Word and obey what God is saying to us. Meditating day and night represents that His Word is always in our hearts and on our minds. As we go through each moment of the day meditating on His Word and listening to the quiet promptings of the Holy Spirit, we will know the right actions and right words to say through every circumstance we face.
