Names of God: Elohei Mikkarov

Why are there so many names for God? Why is it important that we know what they are and what they mean? Our finite, human brains cannot fully comprehend the majesty and glory of who God is. Yet through the various names of God, He chooses to reveal Himself to us so we can come to understand the many personal characteristics of God. His names reveal His power, authority, and holiness. The better we understand and know the names of God the more personal He becomes to us and as we pray, we can call on His name that corresponds with our need. Finally, because the Bible instructs us to honor, fear, and respect God and to not use His name in vain, we need to know exactly what His names are and what they mean. Today, we look at the name Elohei Mikkarov

Today’s Name: Elohei Mikkarov

An encounter with Elohei Mikkarov:

In Jeremiah 23, God speaks judgment against the false prophets who led Judah away from God. These false prophets had no authority from God and no understanding of His purposes, yet they acted as His couriers. In verse 23, God says he is not like the pagan, carved images made by man’s hands who had eyes, but could’t see and ears, but couldn’t hear. He was not confined to the shrine man built. Rather God is immanent – always near. Rhetorically, God asks, “Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?” The answer is “no,” as we see in Psalm 139.

Good News! God is Elohei Mikkarov:

Knowing that God is near is kinda like saying, “I have some good news and some bad news.” The good news is that because God is always near, we can find comfort and peace in His presence. In Isaish 49:16, we find that He engraves us on the palm of his hands. In Psalm 34:18, we can be comforted that God is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. No matter what happens in life — good, bad, COVID, racial tensions, cancer, job loss, a promised promotion doesn’t come through, death of a loved one, a wayward child – Elohei Mikkarov is right there with us.

Bad News! God is Elohei Mikkarov:

The bad news is that those times when we slip up and sin – God’s there then too. We might think some of our sins are secret – never to be known by man – but they never escape God. He not only sees everything – he knows our every thought and he knows our every motive.

When it feels like God is not near:

Sometimes it feels as if God is far off. Most of the time its because we’ve sinned and we do not want God to know. There is really no point in hiding from God. Instead, when we sin, we need to be quick to confess our sin and seek His forgiveness.

Other times that God feels like He is far away is when we move away. These are the times we are not reading His Word and communicating with Him in prayer. Or we may not be active in church where we can worship Him and fellowship with other believers. If you’ve moved away – He’s as close as a prayer – just call out to Him. Elohei Mikkarov is there.

Today’s Prayer:

Elohei Mikkarov, thank you for always being near. You know every moment of my life and nothing escapes your notice. When I’m lonely, you tenderly remind me you are there. When I am scared, you are there. If I am overwhelmed, exhausted, and wondering what my next step is, you are there. Elohei Mikkarov, you are also there when I sin. Help me to repent of sin quickly and not hide from you.

Father, show us who You are as we discover and learn about your many names. Reveal to us why You are worthy of being called the One True, Living God. Teach us to unabashedly love you, respect Your name, and serve only You. Make your character known to us so we can live and walk in your image. Amen.

Today’s verse to meditate on:

2 Chronicles 34:21
“Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”
