Why are there so many names for God? Why is it important that we know what they are and what they mean? Our finite, human brains cannot fully comprehend the majesty and glory of who God is. Yet through the various names of God, He chooses to reveal Himself to us so we can come to understand the many personal characteristics of God. His names reveal His power, authority, and holiness. The better we understand and know the names of God the more personal He becomes to us and as we pray, we can call on His name that corresponds with our need. Finally, because the Bible instructs us to honor, fear, and respect God and to not use His name in vain, we need to know exactly what His names are and what they mean. Today, we look at the name Elohei Mikkarov
Today’s Name: Jehovah Goelekh
An encounter with Jehovah Goelekh:
Each one of us encounters Jehovah Goelekh at the moment we surrender our lives to Christ and ask Him to be our Savior. In that moment the price He paid on the cross covers our sin and redeems our soul.
Israel’s Redeemer:
God first redeemed Israel when he brought them out of Egypt. In Exodus 6:6, God says to Moses: “I am the Lord…and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.” The entire sacrificial system of the Old Testament was a constant reminder to the Israelites that a price had to be paid in order to have redemption from their sins.
God also redeemed Israel out of Babylonian captivity after their sin of idolatry brought God’s judgment on the nation. As the prophet Isaiah foretells of God’s redemption, God says, “Then you will know that I, the LORD [Jehovah], am your Savior, your Redeemer [Goelekh], the Mighty One of Jacob. (Isaiah 60:16).
Today’s Prayer:
Jehovah Goelekh, I know that you are my Redeemer. Forgive me of the times that I take the price you paid for my sins too lightly or for granted. I am humbled that you would endure the cross for me.
Father, show us who You are as we discover and learn about your many names. Reveal to us why You are worthy of being called the One True, Living God. Teach us to unabashedly love you, respect Your name, and serve only You. Make your character known to us so we can live and walk in your image. Amen.
