Do our “guides” need revival?
In this passage, the “guides” were the priests and false prophets that led the nation of Israel away from God. There certainly are preachers today who do not preach the true Word of God and lead people away from the truth. Those preachers will one day have to give an account to God for all the lives lost because they chose to not preach the truth, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Do those in political/government offices need revival?
We also can apply this to those in government offices and those who make laws and policies. Just before Moses died, we find in Deuteronomy 16:18 that God instituted judges over the people: “Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the LORD your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly.”
The judge’s role was to judge the people. That means holding them accountable to the laws God gave them. For example, if there was a dispute between two Israelites about compensation after an accident, say, then the judge’s role was to decide what should be done. A bit like when two people come before Judge Judy with a dispute about who the dog really belongs to or something like that. When it comes to the judges of Israel, the cases are real, the decisions are final.
Judges/Government Officials are held to standards too
But it’s important to see that God didn’t set these judges above the law. They are held to certain standards too. God says to the judges, verse 19, “do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent.” God’s not interested in corrupt judges who play favorites. He doesn’t want judges who will do favors for rich people who can afford them. He wants honest judges who will find the truth and decide issues fairly. Why? Because God is deeply concerned for what is right! That’s why he instituted these judges. Verse 20 says, “Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
God is just! He always does what is right. He exposes every evil, punishes every sin, rights every wrong. And so, he calls his people to make their nation a place of justice too. That’s why he instituted the judges as the first leadership role.
Do our guides and leaders hold up these standards?
Those that hold these offices have a responsibility to make laws that align with God’s laws. Those who sit as judge, are to both judge according to God’s laws and they are held to the standards set forth in God’s laws. When laws were passed to make abortion legal, does that align with God’s laws? No. Abortion is murder and God says, “Thou shalt not murder.” (Exodus 20:13) Proverbs 6:16-19 says, “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”
What about laws that made same-sex marriage legal? God says homosexuality is an abomination to him. Leviticus 18:22 says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”

“Those who were supposed to lead this people led them down blind alleys, And those who followed the leaders ended up lost and confused.” – Isaiah 9:16
The Need for Revival
- What other laws can you think of that have been passed that do not align with God’s laws?
- Pray for your own pastor to preach boldly the truths of God’s Word.
- Pray for the pastors who are teaching false doctrine that God would open their eyes, convict their hearts and teach them the truths of His Word and they would repent and change what they preach.
- And, pray for our political and government leaders to lead our nation in a way that aligns with God’s laws.
Praying for Revival
God, those who serve in leadership roles in our government have not held to your standards. They are leading our nation farther and farther away from you. There are preachers who do not preach the truth of your Word. God, we ask you to raise up guides and leaders for this nation who love you and want to see this nation be a nation that honors and glorifies you. Lord, send us those leaders. For those currently in office, convict their hearts and bring them to repentance for leading our nation away from you. Lord, we ask that you bring a revival in the hearts of pastors and government leaders all across our nation.
Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.
