Revival is needed when there are idols in our lives
Idol worship was rampant in the world throughout the Old Testament, even as early as the book of Genesis. And the land of Canaan was full of idols of all kinds. As the descendants of Abraham settled in the land, they absorbed the customs and culture around them, including idolatry. In Genesis 35, we find God telling Jacob to go to Bethel and dwell there and make an altar. So Jacob told his entire household to put away their foreign god, purify themselves, and change their garments so they can go to Bethel and make an altar to God. They gave their idols to Jacob who hid them under a terebinth tree near Shechem.
The idols we have today
We may not worship stone figures of some false deity, but most of us today have an idol or two that we secretly hold on to. Idols come in many more forms than a carved figure of some kind. They can be hobbies, sports, people, careers, possessions or money. Anything that we make more important in our hearts and lives than God becomes an idol. Jesus said that were our treasure is there our hearts will be also. If you think you don’t have an idol, the consider where you spend your time and money. What are you not willing to do without in order to obediently follow Jesus? That is your idol.
The Need for Revival
- Identify the idols in your life.
- Put away any idols and place God as the highest priority in your life.
- If we got rid of idols and gave God the place of honor in our lives that He deserves, how would our life and or world be different?
Praying for Revival
Father, idols can creep into our lives so quietly and quickly. We may not even recognize that we’ve created an idol in our lives. Reveal any idols in our lives and give us a zeal and passion for you. God, as we restore our priorities and acknowledge you as Lord in our lives, may we see our world change and our hearts revived to know you more, follow you faithfully, and lead others to you.
Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.
