Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him. If you long for revival in America (or your nation) we invite you to reflect on these daily verses and join us in praying for revival.

Today’s Bible verse for Revival

What is coveting?

Coveting is desiring what someone else has. It’s the “Keeping Up with the Joneses” Syndrome. As Exodus 20:17 indicates, we can be guilty of wanting/desiring someone’s husband or wife, their house, or anything else that someone has and we do not.

We don’t have servants today, but it might look like a housewife who is content with the small home she has but then is invited to someone’s home for a small group meeting and their home is large, professionally decorated and such and then when she goes homes, she’s no longer satisfied with her smaller home and begins to pressure her husband for a bigger home.

We also don’t typically go around coveting someone’s ox – but the ox represented one’s livelihood in Old Testament times. So when you say things like, “I work just as hard as they do! Why do they get the higher position and fancy office? That should be mine!”, you are coveting what they have.

And the commandment also says we are not to covet anything that belongs to our neighbor – so not the car they drive or the professionally manicured lawn, or the expensive vacations they take every summer.

Revival refocuses our attention on God

Any time we are coveting what others have, we lose our focus on God and the many blessings that He gives to us. Revival refocuses our attention to God rather than our possessions. 1 Timothy 6:6–10 gives us the cure for covetousness: “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

The Need for Revival

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of covetousness in your life.
  2. Ask Him to forgive you and to help you be content with the blessings He has given you.

Praying for Revival

Father, forgive us for coveting what others have. When we covet, it blinds us to be able to see the many blessings you have given us. Give us a heart of contentment and a faith to know that you will supply our every need.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.
