A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Woe is me!

There is something about being the presence of a righteous and holy God to make us see just how sinful, unrighteous and unholy we are. In the book of Isaiah, it is not until Chapter 6:5 that Isaiah speaks. Until then he is telling us about his vision where he sees God in all His splendor, glory, and holiness. The result is that Isaiah comes face to face with his own sinful condition and that of the nation of Israel. When he says he is a man of unclean lips and his nation is a nation of unclean lips, he is using this as a metaphor to state the ungodly state of his own heart and of his nation. When our hearts reach the same recognition and cry out “Woe is me!” then we are in the position for God to bring revival to our lives and our nation.

Holy, Holy, Holy!

Just before Isaiah speaks, Isaiah sees “the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up” (verse 1). Seraphim stood above him and they call out one to another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” But Isaiah is filled with overwhelming convictions of his own unworthiness and unable to join in the praise of the seraphim or to deliver God’s message to Israel.

Unclean Lips Need a Revival

It is interesting that of all the sins and out of all the Ten Commandments, Isaiah says he is a man of unlcean lips. Certainly the Ten Commandment include not taking the Lord’s name in vain and they say, “thou shalt not lie.” Those would qualify as sins of “unclean lips. But Isaiah’s lament is over his and the nation’s unclean lips – not worshiping idols or breaking their covenant relationship with God.

Today, we still have a problem with unclean lips. What we see on TV and in movies, read in books or the internet, newspapers and magazines, or what you hear at the office, grocery store, sporting events (including little league!) or even as you stroll through a park – wherever we go there is a problem with unclean lips. Not much has changed between Isaiah’s day and ours. Whether it’s impure speech, taking God’s name in vain, cursing, lying, telling dirty jokes, or speaking badly of people we, just like Isaiah, have a problem with unclean lips. Isaiah understood that a man and a nation with unclean lips desperately needed a revival of their hearts.

Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks

Jesus said in Matthew 12:34 that it is out of the abundance of the heart that our mouths speak. Isaiah recognized that the word’s one speaks is a reflection of what’s in their heart. So if the mouth is unclean, the heart is also. Isaiah’s perspective was that the words of one’s mouth reflect the inner person and are therefore significant.

The Need for Revival

  1. Think about the words you use. Do they reflect a person with unclean lips?
  2. Think about the movies, books, magazines, newspapers, websites you frequently utilize. Do they reflect a person with unclean lips?
  3. If the Holy Spirit has convicted you of having unclean lips, then what is the state of your heart?

Praying for Revival

Father, convict us of having unclean lips and unclean hearts. Show us your holiness and reveal just how unholy we are. May we each come to the same realization that Isaiah did and cry out, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips.” Then help us to speak words from a heart of worship and thankfulness, words that life others up and glorifies you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.
