Son of God
Coming in contact with the Son of God
Whenever a person comes in contact with Jesus, their lives are transformed. Throughout His ministry on earth, the Son of God made the blind see, the sick well, and the lame to walk. He forgave sin and cleared guilt. He cast out demons and fed thousands with a boy’s small lunch of fish and bread. Jesus taught the people and had compassion on them. Even in the moment of His death, the life of a hardened Roman soldier was transformed as he witnessed everything Jesus went through during the crucifixion. As a result, the soldier recognized and proclaimed that Jesus was the Son of God.
A Roman centurion who encountered the Son of God
The Roman centurion at Jesus’ crucifixion saw him scourged, mocked, beaten, spit upon, nailed to a cross and watched as Jesus chose to take His final breath. Perhaps he was even the one who scourged Jesus. He probably participated in mocking Jesus. Maybe he was the one wielded the hammer that drove the nails into Jesus’ hands and feet. The Bible doesn’t give him a name and it doesn’t tell us exactly what his role was on the day Jesus was crucified. However, as a centurion, this wasn’t the soldier’s first crucifixion. He probably saw criminals struggle and fight and try to get away from the tortuous cross. But Jesus was different. He willingly laid down His life for us and endured every pain so that we could have eternal life and transform us from sinners to children of God.
Truly, this is the Son of God
Despite all Jesus went through on that day — despite the pain and suffering — can you see the love and compassion in his eyes as he made eye contact with this centurion? The unspoken message that said, “I’m doing this for you?” That’s the man he watched die on the cross. That’s who the centurion encountered that transformed his life. Mark tells us that just before Jesus breathed his last breath, he cried out with a loud voice. John tell us that Jesus cried out, “It is finished.” As Jesus died on the cross, the debt for our sin was paid. Jesus didn’t give up his last breath until His task on earth was done. Because of the cross, we too can experience transformation when we encounter the Son of God.
When was the moment that you met the Savior and your life was transformed? What parts of your life does He need to touch today? Take those areas to Him today and allow Him to transform them into His image.
Jesus, we praise you for the transforming power of your love and forgiveness that cleanses us from our sin. Show us the areas of our lives that need your touch and help us to surrender them to You so that we can be more and more like You every day.
