Each day between December 1-25, we will look at one of the traditional symbols of Christmas, what these symbols mean and how they tell the Christmas story of our Savior’s birth.
Red and Green – What do they mean?
Although no one knows for certain how and why red and green became so closely associated with Christmas, there are a few popular theories. Some say that Coca-Cola play a part is the reason we use red and green for Christmas colors and contribute it to the ads that ran from 1931-1964. But history shows us that the colors were used long before Coca-Cola’s ads.
Red and Green used by the Celtics
Centuries ago, ancient Celtic people believed that holly plants brought beauty and good fortune in the middle of winter. It also served as a reminder that winter wouldn’t last forever and spring was just around the corner. As such, they’d regularly outfit their homes with the red and green plants as a way to promote a prosperous new year.
Over time, the Celtic habit of putting up red and green holly transformed into hanging red and green decorations as a whole. And thus, the idea of decking the halls with the merry colors became a passed down, well-known tradition across the world.
Red and Green in Christian traditions
Christians naturally view red as the blood Jesus shed during his crucifixion that provides a way for us to have eternal life. Green is typically associated with the idea of life. Also, holly, with its prickly leaves is associated with the crown of thorns of Jesus and the red berries are associated with the drops of blood caused by the thorns.
The other colors of Christmas
Certainly red and green are traditionally the colors of Christmas, but other colors are seen as well. Gold, blue, and white are other common colors. Gold symbolizes the gift from the three wise men, blue represents the Kingship of Christ, and white links to the purity of Jesus himself.
