Each day between December 1-25, we will look at one of the traditional symbols of Christmas, what these symbols mean and how they tell the Christmas story of our Savior’s birth.
This week, we will discover the meanings behind some of the Chrismon symbols used to decorate the Christmas tree. Today, the Chrismons are related to the death and resurrection of Jesus. At the end of the post you’ll find full size patterns you can use to make your own Chrismons.
The cup reminds us of the Last Supper Jesus had with His disciples before being crucified. In Matthew 26:27-28, Jesus took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
Death on a cross, or crucifixion, was a painful and torturous death. Hebrews 9:22 says, “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” So everyone of us are sinners who have earned the wage of death. But thankfully, Romans 6:23 also says, “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Because Jesus died on the cross, we can have the free gift of eternal life. Jesus paid our sin debt for us. He died in our place so we can live eternally.
Jesus didn’t stay dead. He overcame death and rose again. He is victorious and He is King of kings, Lord of lords. The crown represents His Kingship over all things. It also reminds us that for those of us who have place our trust in Him will receive the crown of life. James 1:22 says, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” And in 1 Peter 5:4, we find this promise: “And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.”
When we have created a Chrismon Tree, we also hung one nail on the tree near the top and directly on the front of the tree as a remembrance of the price Jesus paid for our sins and because he was willing to die for us, we can have forgiveness of our sins.
