Obedience is the best way
As a child, I learned a song about obedience and what it means in the Christian life. The lyrics are:
Obedience is the very best way
To show that you believe
Doing exactly as the Lord commands
Doing it happily
Action is the key
Do it immediately
Joy you will receive
Obedience is the very best way

Obedience is the key to abundant life
Not only, does the song teach a child how to spell obedience (I still sing it when I spell it!), but it also teaches the key to experiencing abundant life in Christ. Not only is it important to obey God, we need to obey happily and immediately. Doing so brings joy and shows the world the God that we believe in and serve. Even if we don’t understand what God is asking of us, we can trust Him that He always has our best interest in mind.
Obedience means choosing life
Here in Deuteronomy, God put an offer on the table to Israel and the nation had to choose between life and death/good or evil. God commanded them to:
- Love the Lord God
- Walk in His way
- Keep His commandments, statutes, and Judgements.
If they did, they were choosing life and the blessings of God. If they chose not to do these things, then God promised curses, plagues, and sickness.
Simple obedience out of a willing heart is what God wants
God still expects us today to keep these three things. He wants us to love Him. To walk in His way and bear His image everywhere we go. And He wants us to obey Him. This is the key to living life abundantly with joy as we surrender our will to Him and simply obey out of trust, love, and a willing heart. Obedience truly is the very best way to show that you believe God.
Father, we love you and desire to walk in your way and keep your commandments. Even though we may fail at times, we ask that you convict us immediately and that our hearts would be softened to seek your forgiveness so that we can walk with You in abundant life.
