Transformational Love

Week 4 of Advent: Love

The World vs. God on what love is

Every day, we are challenged with the ways of this world conflicting with God’s ways. From the news media to prime time TV to even our friends – we have to choose. We even have to choose who we will call friend and how that applies to our lives. There is something special about the bond of love and fellowship between friends, yet even among friends there are disagreements at times and friendships can be broken. However, in John 15:13-15, Jesus tells us about the greatest love – a love that transforms us from the inside out and a love that can transform the world and the way the world thinks about love.

Hollywood would have us believe that love is about sex. Disney would have us believe that love is “happily ever after.” But Jesus tells us what true love is.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. — John 15:13-15

These verses is about transformational love. As children of God, we are no longer enemies of God. God doesn’t even call us servants. When we do what he tells us to do, he calls us friends. God desires to have a relationship with us and that is why we celebrate Christmas. It was for this reason that God sent his only Son into our world – so that the world would not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

God wants to have fellowship with us because of His great love for us

God, the creator of the world – and the creator of you – desires to have fellowship with you. The world “fellowship” can be defined as a friendly association, especially with people who share one’s interests. What interests do we share with God? Following his commandments. Jesus, who is God’s Son and our Savior. We fellowship with God when we read and study His Word and spend time in prayer. We fellowship with him when we obey his commandments. And when we listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we are fellowshipping with God. When we are attending church and worshipping God, we are fellowshipping with Him.

God’s fellowship with us came at a great cost

Because God loved you so much, He makes it clear that He wants to have fellowship with you, but that fellowship came at a cost: the life of his only Son, Jesus whose blood cleanses us from sin and transforms us from being enemies with God to children of God. This is what Jesus said in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus was talking about himself. This great love cost God his Son and it cost Jesus His life.

But how great is our love for God? Does our love for Him cost us anything? Have we laid down our life in surrender to him? As we celebrate Christmas and the birth of our Savior, we need to remember the reason he was born in the first place – to lay down his life for us. Is there anything on this Christmas day that you have not laid down in surrender to him?

Because of God’s love, we have friendship with Him

Philips Criag and Dean sing the popular song, “I am a friend of God!” The lyrics are:

Who am I that You are mindful of me
That You hear me when I call
Is it true that You are thinking of me
How You love me it’s amazing!

I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
He calls me friend

It can be hard to think that the Almighty God and creator of the universe calls me friend – but he does! And if you have asked Jesus to save you of your sins, you are his friend too! It is his desire to be your inner most friend – to transform you into his friend.

Where there is friendship, there is intimacy. Can you say there is intimacy between you and God? Psalm 51:t6 says, “Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.” The only way to have intimacy with God is by daily Bible study and prayer. You can not develop a relationship by just showing up on Sundays and spending an hour at church. Friendships take daily time and intentionality.

As we celebrate Christmas today, remember to take time to spend with Him – after all it is His birthday that we are celebrating and he longs to have friendship with you – a friendship that gives you freedom from the troubles of this world. A friendship that brings you closer to His Father as he transforms you to become more like Him.

Because of God’s love, we are renewed

Webster’s defines renewed as “Made new again; repaired; re-established; revived; renovated; regenerated.” To be renewed means that we change our mindset forever. When God created Adam and Eve, they were without sin until the moment in the Garden of Eden when Eve gave into the temptation. Every single person since that time has been born in sin. But when Jesus gave is life for us and we accepted His gift of salvation, he renewed us and re-established our relationship with God. Before, our sinful selves were conformed to this world. But as a child of God, He transforms as and renews our mind so that our focus is on doing the will of God.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” When God renews us, everything within us becomes focused on what He would have us to do and we step forward in his plan for us obediently, without delay.

Jesus, the Prince of Peace, came to give us peace

When we are lost in our sin we do not have peace with God. But Jesus left he glory and splendor of heaven to be born as a baby to a young teenage girl who was still a virgin. He took on human form and knew the hardships of life, the betrayal of Judas, experienced a tortuous death all became of his love for us. And because of that great love, we can experience fellowship and friendship with him and the renewal that transforms us into his likeness. This is the entire meaning that Christ came to give us peace. Jesus tells us in John 14:27, “ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” But it is only in fellowship, friendship, and renewal that the peace of Jesus Christ centers within us and flows out of us.

This Christmas, can we seek to have more fellowship, friendship, and renewal in our lives as we focus on the great love of Jesus and what that love cost him?

Christmas Eve: Reflecting on God’s Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Week 4 of Advent: Love

Reflecting on God’s love

Christmas is, of course a time of joy and celebration of the birth of our Savior. When we celebrate birthdays with cake, balloons, streamers, games, and ice cream. It’s a party. Wouldn’t you find it odd if your friends threw you a birthday party and as you walked into the room all your friends and family whispered, “surprise!” And then they spent the next 30 minutes singing soft songs about your life and quietly, reverently, and respectfully discussed your good qualities? However, if you attend a Christmas Eve service at your church, you will likely spend the evening holding a lit candle, singing some Christmas carols and your pastor will have a message that reflects on the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of our Savior.

It is good to take time to reflect on the love of God that made a way through the birth of Jesus for us to have the gift of salvation. We need to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of shopping, cooking, wrapping gifts, attending concerts and parties and just be still and quiet. But it seems odd to celebrate a birthday in such a way.

Love often doesn’t make sense

If we think about it, love often doesn’t make sense. We see this in the very reason that Jesus was born.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

God knew what was going to happen to His Son. God knows how evil and perverted this world is. He didn’t create the world this way. Our sinful nature takes everything God made and perverts it. As a mother, it can be hard to understand how God would allow Jesus to endure the cross. It’s the most well known statement in the world, but, as a parent, it is difficult to process. How could God do that to his own Son? I wouldn’t willingly put my kids in a dangerous place and let thugs beat the crap out of them and kill them. No sane parent would do that. On the surface this doesn’t make sense.

Love is foolish to those headed for destruction

But God explains Himself throughout the Bible for why He sent Jesus to us. Paul says in 1 Corinthians, “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the vey power of God.” For those who do not believe in Jesus this is all foolish and silly. Love does not make sense to those who do not know and understand the perfect love of God. 1 John 1:9 says, “God is love.” So for those of us who know Love (God), it is not silly and foolish. It is power. Power over sin, death, and hell. It is power of Satan and this world. Why? Paul tell us in Romans 8, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus form the dead, lives in you.”

So, Jesus coming into the world as God in the flesh may seem foolish to the disbeliever, but to me, He is the power that drives my life.

Love is always sacrificial

John 3:16 teaches us a second thing about love. It is always sacrificial.

Just because I obey the law does not mean I love the law. I obey the law because it honors God and I would prefer to not face the consequences of breaking the law. Many Christians misunderstand this concept in their Spiritual life. They think if they tithe a few dollars, go to church when they can, get baptized, and sign up a few times a year on the volunteer list then they are OK with God. But that’s not love. It isn’t sacrifice.

God love the world so much that he gave his one and only Son. God is love. He shows us what love is. Love is sacrifice. Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to you life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”

Love is sacrifice. A genuine follower of Jesus does not decide what part of their life to give to God, they give their all. We all make mistakes. We all sin. Not a single person is perfect, so it is a struggle. I can claim to love God, but, love isn’t defined by what I say, or even what I do. I can do religious stuff and not sacrifice a thing. Love is sacrifice. This is the message Jesus teaches.

Have I sold out my life for Jesus?

It is easy to accept things the way they are and maintain a status quo. Most of us have problems with change. So, We do church the way we always do it and we get stuck in a rut in our relationship with Jesus because we do not take the time to intentionally invest in our relationship with Him by identifying the areas of spiritual growth that need attention. We allow the kids, careers, hobbies, and relationships become more important.

The sad result is that we do not have the intimate relationship with Jesus that He longs to have with us. Getting stuck in a rut isn’t love. Love is sacrifice. A great place to start evaluating your relationship with God is to reflect on the question: “Have I sold out my life for Jesus?” And what better time to reflect on this question than on Christmas Eve as we reflect on His birth. God simply gave you His Son because He loves you. But we cannot assume for a moment that God will allow us to abuse His great sacrifice by living the same way we’ve always lived. Love is sacrifice. Jesus demands your life in exchange for His. But when we think about that, it isn’t even a bargain. It’s a rip off for Him because while we take on his righteousness, he took on our sins as He bore them on the cross.

A Christmas Revolution Challenge

So this Christmas Eve, as you pause the celebration of Christ’s birth, I want to challenge you to ask the Holy Spirit what you are sacrificing. As a part of our human nature we have a tendency to slip into the comfortable and the routine. There is not sacrifice in the routine. There is no sacrifice in comfort. It is spiritually necessary for us to contemplate our journey with God and ask on simple question with huge implications: “Have I sold out my life for Jesus?” I want to challenge you to not set a resolution to sell out to Jesus – but instead have a revolution. There is no turning back in a revolution. A resolution is simply a stated desire or opinion. A revolution, however, is a change in thinking and a complete replacement of what you are. Revolutions take a crowd and if we have a spiritual revolution, we would see the revival our world so desperately needs.

Give Jesus your life. Everything you are. Everything you own. Ask God to use it all for His purpose and for His glory. Have you sold out your life for Jesus? What do you need to sacrifice today?

Nothing Can Separate us from God’s Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Week 4 of Advent: Love

The Good News Of God’s Great Love is Offered to All Mankind

The message of God’s great love was originally given to Abraham and his descendants, who we know as the Jewish people. We find this promise in Genesis 12:2, “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” From that time on, the descendants of Abraham felt this promise was given exclusively to them. They believe that they alone would be given the Messiah.

However, in the very next verse, we find the good news that this promise would be for all mankind. Verse 3 says, “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” God promised Abraham, but the promise extended to “all people on earth” who would be blessed through Abraham. Jesus, the Messiah, would eventually be born through Abraham’s seed and Jesus’ birth is the blessing God promised. God’s plan for our salvation was given and offered to the Jewish people, but also to all peoples of the world.

God had to remind the Jews they did not have exclusive rights to the Messiah

More than once, God had to remind the Jewish people that the Messiah would be for all people. Through the prophet Isaiah, God said, “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; and I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations” (Isaiah 42:6). And in Acts 1:8, Jesus commanded the disciples, “you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Jerusalem and Judea were the Jewish people. Samaria was made up of Jews who had intermarried with Gentiles. The End of the earth means everywhere else – the Gentile people. And if you are not Jewish, then you are gentile.

In Acts 10 and 11 we find Peter is given a vision to go the Gentiles. He obeyed, but the other apostles quickly Called Peter to account for his actions. In the first century of the church, the greatest persecution was because Jewish Christians believed the Gentiles were to receive the benefit and blessing that God had given to the Jewish people and the stout Jews who believed in the old traditions and customs, could not accept that. However, it has always been part of God’s plan. They were not chosen because they were the only people to receive the Messiah. They were chosen as the race who would bring the Messiah to the rest of the world.

God’s great love is for the whole world and this truth is summed up in John 3:16. “God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

The Blessings of God’s Great Love are only Received by those who Choose to love God

God never forces his love on anyone. It must be received. His love is received when we repent of our sins, turn from our sinful way of living and ask Jesus to forgive us of our sin and by faith accept His free give of salvation. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

We each must choose what we will do with God’s gracious, extravagant love. Joshua 24:15 says, “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” The choice has always been given and left with each one of us to decide if we will follow Jesus Christ, or reject Him.

The simple truth is that God loves each one of us enough that He sent Jesus, His only Son to die for us so that we could have a relationship with Him. His love for us is far greater than any one of us could ever imagine and yet He never forces His love on anyone. With a love so great, how it must break His heart when people choose to reject Him, but still he gives us the freedom to accept or reject His gift of salvation.

The Love of God is only enjoyed by those who have chosen to receive it

When we initially chose to accept Jesus as our Savior, we began a relationship with him. One that holds us eternally secure in our salvation. Yes, we can still sin and when we do, we need to turn and repent. But once we accept Christ as our savior, nothing can separate us from God’s love.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

However, this promises is only for those who are children of God. If you have not yet accepted Christ as your Savior, you are already separated from God because your unforgiven sin stands between you and God. But God loves you too and he stands ready to forgive you when you come to him by faith acknowledging that you are a sinner and repent of your sins and ask Jesus to save you from your sins. The moment you choose to make Jesus your Savior, then nothing will be able to separate you from God from that moment on.

The Extent of God’s Great Love is Greater than we can Comprehend

As we go through life, we experience many things that can cause us to doubt or wonder about God’s love. In those moments, we only need to look at the baby in a manger and the Son of God on the cross to see just how reckless and extravagant God’s love is for us. God desires to have a relationship with us. He desires to conform us into the likeness of His Son (Romans 8:29). Because of God’s love for us, he makes us joint heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:17). So not only does God conform us into the likeness of Jesus, but God sees us as full brothers and sister of Jesus, making us children of God and heirs to all the blessings that God has for those who are His children.

Do you question God’s Love for you?

Most of us at some point in life question God’s love for us. Maybe its as you go through a trial or perhaps its when you think you have done something too awful for God forgive. Regardless of what makes you question God’s love for you, if you are a Christian and child of God, than the voice of doubt is the voice of Satan who wants you to live a defeated life as a Christian. It has always been his way. He tries to fill our minds with doubts, fears, and questions to make us doubt the promises of God.

We find Satan doing just this in Zechariah 3:1-5. The Bible says:

“Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire.” Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.”

God wants us to know the depth and height of His Love for Us

My friend, God wants you to live a victorious life and to understand the depth, height, and width of God’s love for you. We are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ. Just as God rebuked Satan with Joshua, God will also rebuke and dismiss the accusations of Satan when he tries to bring us guilt for anything that Jesus has forgiven us of. Who shall separate us from the Love of God? Absolutely no one or nothing. Not tribulation, distress persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword.

These things can test our faith and even challenge our very being. They can make life hard, humiliate us, and make us worry and anxious. But as we come back to the promises we have in Christ, these things can also make our faith stronger so that nothing can shake or destroy it. James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

So when you face times of illness, pain, sorrow, loneliness remember the resounding assurance Paul gives us about the power of the love of God. Do not allow these things to make you forget God’s love or to make you feel like God has forsaken you. Instead, rest on the promise that we have victory in Jesus and that He has promised to never leave or forsake us. The forces of evil have already been defeated (Colossians 2:15). God’s great love for us is that no circumstances of life and not even the demons of hell, or anything in all of creation is great enough to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Emmanuel God With Us

So this Christmas, as you think about the baby in the manger, remember that his name is Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” And in the moments of life when you doubt God’s love, remember he wanted you to know that He is always with you, so he named his son Emmanuel – because nothing can separate us from God’s love.

God Demonstrated His Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Week 4 of Advent: Love

Love is more than just a word – it’s a verb. If someone says, “I love you,” but their actions don’t demonstrate love, we likely are not going to believe that person loves us. When we love someone, we show them in the things we do for them, how we speak to them and about them, and how we take care of them. God demonstrated His love for us in all of these ways. But the biggest way He demonstrated His love for us was in sending Jesus to be born of a virgin and laid in a manger so that he would grow up to be nailed to a cross, die, and rise from the dead so that we could have eternal life.

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
— Romans 5:8

Easy Love

It’s easy to love those that love us back. Those who treat us well, with respect. We find it easy to love people who are like us. We love our friends, parents, children, siblings, and extended family. Hopefully, its easy to love your spouse. But what about loving those who are unlovable, different, hard to get along with, or those who have hurt us in some way?

Unconditional Love

The difference in how we love others from how God loves us, is that even when we were His enemy and lost in sin without Christ, God still sent Jesus to die in our place and be the propitiation for our sins. When he died on the cross, Jesus appeased the wrath of God caused by our sin. It was the reason that Jesus came to earth. He was sent by God as a demonstration to us of how much God loves us. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

Whoever believes

Did you know you are a “whoever?” It doesn’t matter what you’ve done (or are doing now). Your past doesn’t matter. How you grew up doesn’t matter. Your financial status doesn’t matter. Your political party doesn’t matter. There are no “big” or “little” sins in God’s eyes. We have all sinned and fall short of His glory. So each and every one of us is a “whoever.” That’s good news! Because whoever believes in Him, will not perish, but have eternal life. You just have to believe by faith that Jesus is the Son of God who was born, lived, died, and rose again to pay the price for your sin. Then by faith, you accept His free gift of salvation and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life. If you’ve done that, then eternal life is yours. If you haven’t, it can be yours right now.

Romans 10:9-10 says that “if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”  In the words of J.D. Greerer, “J.D Greerer, “It’s not the prayer that saves; it’s the repentance and faith behind the prayer that lays hold of salvation.

What is repentance?

Christianity.com explains repentance:

In the Old Testament, two Hebrew words help us understand repentance. The first is the word “nacham,” which means to turn around or to change the mind. The second is the word “sub.” It is used over 600 times in the Old Testament and is translated by such words as “turn,” “return,” “seek,” “restore.” You see it very often in phrases like “to turn to the Lord with all your heart.”

When you come to the New Testament there is one word you need to know — the Greek word metanoia, which literally means “to change the mind.” Repentance fundamentally means to change your mind about something. It has to do with the way you think about something. You’ve been thinking one way, but now you think the opposite way. That’s repentance — the changing of the mind.

Repentance is a perfect description of what happens when you come to Christ. You no longer reject Christ, but now you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God. You do a spiritual about-face, which in turn changes everything.

And not only do you change your mind about Christ, but you change your mind about sin as well as you discover what it really means to honor God. You realize that it’s no longer about performance. It’s about a heart attitude that confesses Christ and seeks to honor Him in every aspect of life!

Repentance is the demonstration of our Love to God

God demonstrated His love to us through His Son, Jesus. Jesus demonstrated His love for us by sacrificing His life in our place to pay the ages for our sin. Repentance is one way we demonstrate of our love to God. Once we have placed our faith in Christ and become a Christian, we can not ever lose our salvation. Yet, we’re still human and humans sin – every day. So repentance is something we do over and over.

Thankfully, Jesus’ payment for our sins, covers all our sins – every single one of them. But neither is our salvation an excuse to go on sinning. If repentance has occurred, then our mind and heart has changed toward how we think and feel about sin. As we grow in Christ, we should find ourselves sinning less and less. We will have a heart that out of our love for God, we want to do what honors and glorifies Him. As we live in obedience to Him, we continue to demonstrate our love to Him.

Because God Is Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Week 4 of Advent: Love

The clear message of this passage is that we are to love one another and why we are to love one another. And the reason is simple…. because God is love. But let’s face it. Most human beings find it difficult to love the people we consider “unlovable.” Most of us love others that are close to us – our friends, family, and close friends. But what happens when they do something to wrong us or hurt us? Well, we typically stop loving them and move quickly to hating them. The truth of the matter is we love others on a conditional basis. When those conditions are broken, we chose to stop loving them.

The very unfortunate misconceptions about love

In some ways our misconceptions about love are not our fault. We can easily blame Disney and Hollywood for giving us how we have come to view this emotion. Disney gives us the fairytale love that ends with “and they lived happily ever after.” But when life isn’t happily ever after, we are heart broken and decide this isn’t love. So we dump that person and move on to the next, ever chasing the dream of “happily ever after.”

But then there’s Hollywood love, which isn’t love at all. It’s more appropriately named, “lust.” In this concept, love is based on attractiveness, sexual appeal and the like. Then when age sets in and the numbers on the scales go higher, the hair starts turning gray, the body starts sagging, well we “fall” out of love and trade the current “love” in for a younger, more attractive model.

Why we have such a hard time understanding love

If we truly want to experience and know love, then we have to recognize the order that is found in 1 John 4:7-8. It tells us that love is from God. So if we do not know nor experienced the unconditional love of God, there is no way we can truly love someone else. That’s what these verses tell us.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

When we jump down to verse 19, we find that we love because he first loved us. And in verse 11, it says, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” Why? Because love is from God. In other words, it originates and comes from God first. It does not originate in us.

God first loved us because God is love

Because God loved us first, we are then called to respond in love towards others. None of us are deserving of God’s love. We are all broken by sin. We all fall short of the glory of God. But yet despite or brokenness and sinfulness, God chooses to love us anyway. If we can truly grasp the enormity of God’s grace and love towards us, then the only right response is to extend the same grace and love to others. If we do, there there should be no racial divisions, murder, abuse, deceit, and the like. Because we do not do these types of behaviors towards those that we truly care about.

God’s Love Manifested

We celebrate Christmas because God’s love was manifested among us (verses 9 &10).  The word, “manifest” means to display or show a quality or feeling by one’s acts, to demonstrate, to show evidence or prove. So John, then, is saying, “Do you want to know what love is about?” And then he begins to explain it to us and his explanation is the whole reason we celebrate Christmas…because God sent his only Son into the world.

So then if we were to ask John today, “John, what is love?” He would explain it as, “Love is Christmas.” It is God sending his Son into this world to die for us and pay the price for our sin so that we can know God, have a relationship with God, and live with God for all eternity. Because we were lost in our sins and on the path for eternal death and separation from God, God chose to do the loving thing and sent Jesus so that we could live (verse 9).

Jesus’ purpose was established before His birth

As we look at the Christmas Story, we find that even before Mary gave birth, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-22). He accomplished his purpose when he died on the cross and rose again from the grave.

Jesus was the propitiation for our sins

1 John 4:10 tells us the God sent Jesus to be the propitiation for our sins. That is not really a word we throw around in our everyday vocabulary. So, what does it mean? Basically, it is a word that means “appeasing the wrath.” Because each one of us chose the path of sin at some point very early in life, God was angry with because of our sin. The wrath of his fury was on us.

Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. But when Jesus sacrificed his life in our place, God’s wrath was turned into peace. So now, when we place our faith in Christ, God is no longer angry with us. Instead, He delights in us. Our sins are forgiven because Jesus took upon himself the wrath of God that should have been ours. Propitiation, then, occurs when one’s anger has been turned into love. And that is what the cross does for us. It turns God’s wrath for our sin into love and grace. Because the payment for our sin was made by Jesus, we can then be forgiven of our sin. However, we must accept this propitiation as a free gift. It isn’t ours until we reach out accept the gift Jesus offers to us.

Love: It’s what Christmas is all about

True life comes through Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus said that true life comes only through him. He said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). If you want ultimate life, it comes through Jesus. It comes through faith in him. There’s no other way. And because God loved us first, we have the greatest gift of love through Jesus.

That’s what Christmas is about.
