Why is daily Bible reading important?

Bible Reading is vitally important to growing spiritually and keeping our spiritual selves full. God wants us to hide His Word in our hearts, meditate on it and apply it to our lives. When we have a plan, we are more likely to follow through. Here are eight reasons you should have a daily Bible Reading plan:

  • We can find His will for our lives
  • Bible reading is our spiritual nourishment
  • It helps us be able to discern the thoughts and intents of our heart.
  • The Bible instructs us in righteousness
  • It gives us power to overcome trials, heartaches, and sin
  • God gives us many promises, but you won’t know them unless you read about them, memorize them, and know if it’s a promise intended for us today
  • God reveals Himself to us and we learn about Him which strengthens our relationship with Him
  • He also speaks to us through His Word.

Don’t miss what God has to say to you today.
It’s time to practice spiritual self-care and read your Bible!

Practice Spiritual Self care and dig into God’s Word today to be revived and renewed!

Fasting & Prayer for Revival: Sitting on the Sidelines

Today we invite the people of God to join us in fasting and prayer for a revival in America. Beginning at 6 am we will be giving a focus area of prayer for each hour until 10 pm. Please join us each hour in prayer. We have been examining the areas in our lives where we need to repent. In this hour we will look at how God’s people are guilty of sitting on the sidelines and allowed our nation to sink into the moral and sinful cesspool we’ve become.

3 pm Revival prayer focus:

This hour pray that God will convict His people of sitting on the sidelines. Ask Him to forgive us for not taking our stance in the spiritual battles and political battles that have led our nation to stray from God.

Revival begins with God’s people.

Ephesian 6:12 “For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.”

Sitting on the Sidelines of Spiritual Battles

As God’s people, we are part of His army but for too long too many have been content to sit on the sidelines, content to let others fight the battle. Those who are fighting are weary and tired. They’re battle fatigued and compassion fatigued. Too many are throwing in the white flag and surrendering and walking away from their calling because they have nothing left to give.

We’ve each been handed our God-given gifts and tasks and it takes all of us working together to keep Satan from winning the spiritual battle. If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, it’s time to suit up in your spiritual armor and get in the battle.

Paul told us in Ephesians 6:10-18 to put on the armor of God:

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word.

Stand and fight!

Sitting on the Sidelines of Political Battles

Many of us are also guilty of sitting on the sidelines in the political arena. We may go out and cast our vote and think we’re doing our part. Voting is important and if you don’t vote, you’re definitely sitting on the sidelines.

However, we need to be aware of what our political leaders are doing. When we go to the polls we should know what they stand for – not just what they say they stand for but what does their track record say about them. What bills have they supported in the past? Knowing their stance on the matters important to God is much more important than knowing their political party. If they say they are Christian, where do they attend church? Do they go often? How are they actively involved in serving in their church? Are they afraid to share their faith in the political world?

We also end up sitting on the sidelines when we know important items are on the ballot but we keep quiet about what God and His Word has to say about them. If the Christians of America stood up in the political arena there would have never been prayer removed from our schools. The Ten Commandments would not have been removed from federal buildings. Marriages would not have been “redefined.” Abortion would have never been made legal.

We need to get off the sidelines and get in the battle. Suit up!

“The coming revival must begin with a great prayer revival. It is in the closet, with the door shut, that the sound of abundant revival will be first heard. An increase in the secret prayer of ministers and members will be the sure herald of blessing.”

Andrew Murray

Join us in prayer:

Father, for too long we’ve sat on the sidelines. We’ve not done our part in the battle. We have not stood up for You. As a result, our nation is filled with abominations and sin. The same sins that led your chosen nation, Israel, into exile. Because of the sin in our nation, Your face no longer shines on it and your favor has been removed.

Father, how I long for America to return to you. I am not content to sit on the sidelines. I will do my part in the spiritual battles and the political battles. Empower me, God, with your strength and wisdom. God, I put on the whole armor of God so that I can stand against the tactics of the devil. I put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. And God, pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit to be watchful with all perseverance to open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador. Help me to speak boldly as I ought to speak.

Father, we are here. The people called by your name. Today, we come to you brokenhearted, acknowledging how we, your people, have allowed this nation to turn so far away from you. And today, we ask you to revive our hearts. Revive your Church. Revive our homes, families, and marriages. Move among us. We invite you to be Lord in each one of us.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

2 Chronicles 32:7-8. Fighting Battles

We face battles every sing day and sometimes they leave us filling defeated or overwhelmed. We look at the circumstances around us and instantly see defeat. Thankfully the nation of Judah had a king on the throne who “did right in the sight of the Lord”. And because he did, when the Assyrians came knocking, he receives divine help and God fights the battles for them.

When the Assyrians came knocking, Judah had a king on the throne who “did right in the sight of the Lord.” Therefore, the Lord was on his side and helped them and fought the battle for them.

At this time in Judah’s history, Hezekiah was king in Judah and Sennacherib was king of Assyria. Sennacherib entered Judah and made camp against the fortified cities of Judah. Assyria was used to winning its battles and Judah was no match for them

Hezekiah faced a battle against Assyria – We face a battle against Satan

As Christians, we face battles against our enemy, Satan and all his army of demons. Our enemy is constantly filling their bows with their fiery darts and they aim for our most venerable areas. We no sooner defend ourselves against one before another is already zinging through the air to find it’s mark. Sometimes, if feels as if we are defending ourselves against multiple fiery darts at once. As Hezekiah looked out at the vast Assyrian army, he had to be overwhelmed and afraid. Like Hezekiah, we have two choices to make: surrender in defeat or allow God to fight our battles for us. When Hezekiah saw the Assyrian army, he went into action to protect his nation with four battle strategies. We can apply these strategies to the battles that Satan brings to our doorsteps.

Hezekiah’s battle strategies: 1) stop up the water from the spring so the Assyrians had no water 2) fortify and get battle ready 3) organized and activated the army 4) reminded the people that Assyria was no match for Yahweh

Battle Strategy #1: stop up the springs so the enemy has no water and dig a tunnel to send water inside the city

First, Hezekiah instructed his leaders and commanders to stop up the water from the springs that were outside the city. In doing so, they cut off the water supply for Sennacherib’s army. But the people inside the city would need water, so he built a tunnel. Water would then flow from the springs underground and send the water inside the fortified city.

When we are in a battle against our enemy, we need to stop up extra and unnecessary activities that are draining us. Satan loves to keep us so busy that we don’t have time to drink from the Living Water of Christ. By freeing up our time, we can get alone with Jesus through His Word. We can focus on prayer and Bible study. As we seek God’s will, claim His promises, and draw on His strength, we renew our strength and our faith. Through the eyes of faith we can then see God at work in our situation.

When we are feeling overwhelmed or in a battle, we need to look for areas where we can stop up extra, unnecessary activities that are draining us so we can spend more time soaking up the living water of Christ.

Battle Strategy #2: Fortify and get battle ready

Second, Hezekiah strengthened himself so that he would be battle ready. He built up the wall that was broken, added another wall outside, repaired another fortification called the Millo, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

In Ephesians 6, Paul tell us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might and that we are to put on the full armor of God so that we can withstand the wiles of the devil because we do not fight against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and rulers of the darkness and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

The battles we face are spiritual battles. So we need spiritual armor. With the Armor of God, we are able to stand. This armor includes the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. These pieces of armor include five components of defensive armor and only one offensive weapon. But if we are going to “put them on,” then we need to know how they work. Let’s look at how each of these pieces of armor helps us fight in the battles against Satan:

The armor of God that fortifies, strengthens and gets us battle ready:
Belt of Truth:

The belt of the Roman’s soldier’s armor is the piece that holds all the other pieces in place. For the Christian, Jesus said He is the way, the truth, and the life. We find all the truth we need to fight against Satan when we obliterate his lies with the truth of God’s word. It is these truths that set us free from Satan’s lies.

Satan wants us to believe that we have no hope, that we could never measure up to be good enough for God, that we are sinful and could never merit God’s grace. He wants us to see ourselves as failures, not worthy of God using us to advance His kingdom. But the truth of God’s love and Jesus’ sacrificial death, burial and resurrection sets us free from sin and give us eternal life. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus counterattacked with Scripture and for every lie Satan tempted Jesus with, Jesus quoted back truth. Truth conquers Satan’s lies.

We find all the truth we need to fight against Satan when we counterattack his lies with the truth of God’s Word and it is these truths that set us free from Satan’s lies. Truth conquers Satan’s lies.

Breastplate of righteousness:

For the Roman soldier, the breastplate covered the heart and provided protection to it and other vital organs. For the Christian, Christ’s righteousness protects us from Satan’s accusations and charges. It is only the righteousness of Jesus (not our own!) that is given to us when we accept Him as our Savior that covers and protects us.

Shoes of the gospel of peace:

Any soldier marching into battle needs strong, dependable, comfortable shoes. But what is the gospel of peace? The word “gospel” means “good news,” referring to the sacrifice Jesus made for us so that we can be saved. As a result, God’s judgment for our sins is satisfied, which sets us at peace with Him.

For the Christian, Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.” 1 John 2:6 tells us that if we abide in Jesus, we ought to also walk just as Jesus walked. Satan is constantly trying to set up traps and obstacles to get us off course. And as we set our feet on the paths that God has given us, using the Word of God to light our way, we can advance the Kingdom of God as we obey the orders He has given us and keep steadily walking forward as we take the gospel of peace to others.

As we set our feet on the paths that God has given us, using the Word of God to light our way, we can advance the Kingdom of God as we obey the His orders and keep steadily walking forward as we take the gospel of peace to others.

Shield of faith:

Out of all six pieces of armor, Paul says, “Above all…take the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” Our faith defends the blows of doubt and temptation that Satan hurls at us continually. Our faith will keep us steadfast in our walk with Christ. Romans 12:3 tells us that God gives each one of us a measure of faith. As we depend on Him, our faith will grow and become a shield that protect us and enables us to live a victorious life

Helmet of Salvation:

Our mind is one of the most venerable parts for Satan to attack. Every soldier knows that battles are won and lost in the mind. Satan wants us to doubt. He wants us to doubt our Salvation, that God is real, that God could love someone like me, that I’ve done too much bad for God to save me.

The Helmet of Salvation protect our minds and gives us a sure knowledge of our salvation. We can fill our minds with promises like 1 John 1:9 and 1 John 5:11-12. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 5:11-12 tells us, “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life.” We can memorize these verses and others like them so that when Satan wants to throw the fiery darts of doubts, we can throw back the promises of God.

The helmet of Salvation protects our minds when Satan wants us to doubt. Memorizing Bible verses and hiding them in our heart gives us an arsenal of weapons so that when Satan throws his fiery darts of doubt, we can throw back the promises of God.

Sword of the Spirit:

This is the only piece of our armor that is an offense piece. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that God’s Word is “living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” When Jesus faced the temptations in the wilderness, he used scripture as his weapon. This is why Bible study is so important for the Christian. You can’t use your sword if you don’t know the truth and power that it contains.

Battle Strategy #3: organize and activate the army

Third, Hezekiah organized his military, setting captains over the people. When we are facing spiritual and physical battles, we need to pray. Daniel 10:12-14 says, “Then he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come.”

Matthew 18:10 teaches that angels are assigned to represent believers to God and that these angels have access to the heavenly throne and constantly present our needs to God. Psalm 103:20-21 says, “Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will.” Psalm 34:7 says, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.”

What activates the army of God?

The angels make up God’s army, and they are activated by our prayers. Angels stand at the throne of God waiting to do His bidding and when we pray, God dispatches them to fight on our behalf or work out a need that we have. When Daniel was praying, an answer to his prayer was delayed by 21 days by an evil supernatural being and the arch angel, Michael, had to come to help him defeat the demon. Just as Hezekiah organized his army, our prayers organize and activate God’s army.

Just as Hezekiah organized his army against the Assyrians, our prayers organize and activate God’s army against Satan.

What if Daniel had stopped praying? Would help from Michael not come and the angel never get to Daniel? Possibly. It’s certainly a sobering thought to wonder how many times we stopped praying and because we did, we didn’t receive the help that was sent. If you’re facing a spiritual battle, don’t stop praying. If necessary, dig a tunnel for the Living Water to come rushing in to refresh and renew your faith then pray even more. Pray harder. Enlist other believers to pray with you and for you.

Battle Strategy #4: Remember that the enemy is no match for the strength of Yahweh

Lastly, Hezekiah gathered the people to him and to reminded them that Assyria was no match for the strength of Yahweh. Because of the strength of the eternal Yahweh, the people had no need to be afraid or dismayed. Their courage and strength was found in God. All the Assyrian King had on his side was his mighty and vast army made of mortal flesh and blood – but the people of Judah had the Almighty Eternal God on their side. Because God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, we can know that the same Almighty God is on our side. Just as he fought for the people of Judah, He will fight for us.

Over and over again in the history of Israel and Judah, we see God fight for His people. But he fights for them when they are humbly surrendered to Him, honoring Him with their worship, and following after only Him. But, when they strayed into idol worship and turned away from God, the people met with defeat.

If you feel like you are losing the battle, can you identify any area where you have turned away from God? Are there areas your have not surrendered to Him? Do you have any idols in your life? Are you a person who does “right in the eyes of God?” You may want to spend some time in prayer asking God to reveal to you any thing that could hinder God fighting for you. Quickly confess and repent from sin and surrender totally to God. Then we need to suit up in our God-given armor, pray, and allow God to fight the battle for us.

Do you have a daily Bible Reading plan?

If not, come join us as we read the Bible through in one year. Each day we post the scripture reading along with links to read it online.

Have you learned this week’s memory verse?

2 Chronicles 20;12

“For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

Do you serve in ministry? Great! The self-care blogs are here for you.

In this series of blogs, we breakdown why people in ministry need to practice self care. We explain the differences between stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Drawing from both psychology and Biblical principles, we teach self-care to keep ministry servants living out God’s call as a missionary, small group leader, worship pastor, nursery worker, facility/maintenance staff, religious non-profit staff, or any other ministry staff, volunteer, or lay-leader. Regardless of the ministry service God called you to, self-care is crucial to continuing God’s work.

If you can relate to this, then take some time to read our self care blogs.

Test your Bible smarts and see if you can answer our trivia questions. We post a trivia question every other day and the correct answer on the next day. Stop by the trivia page and grab a question or two and see if your friends and family can answer it.

Romans 13:11-14. Now is the Hour to Wake up from Sleep

December 03 Romans 11 13-14Besides this, knowing the time, it is already the hour for you to wake up from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is nearly over, and the daylight is near, so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk with decency, as in the daylight: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no plans to satisfy the fleshly desires.

Today as we consider during this first week of Advent what it means to prepare for the second coming of Christ, and Romans 13:11-14, we want to examine the impact of a lost world trapped in the darkness of sin and that part of preparing for Christ’s coming again is to bring the light of the world into the darkness – because dawn is coming – the moment when Jesus steps out of the realms of heaven and calls His children home. We should not only be preparing ourselves for the moment we meet Jesus, but also those who do not yet know him. Night is nearly over where the darkness of the world rules. Dawn is coming where light dispels the darkness. And yet millions are still trapped in the darkness of their sins.

Do you consider yourself a morning person or a night person? I am definitely a night owl. In fact, when Brian asked me to marry him I tried to warn him. I told him he needed to know two things about me before he thought he wanted to marry me: I’m expensive and I don’t do mornings. He found both were true very quickly. I have three alarms set on my phone because I know I will ignore the first two, pull the covers up over my head, and go back to sleep. On the other hand, I have a niece who has always been a morning person. If the sun is up even just a peek then she is wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to go. Bless her heart.

I know me well enough to know not to schedule complex or difficult task in the morning hours if at all possible. Naturally, I can’t always save them for later in the day, but I know I will be much more successful with those kind of tasks after I’ve been up a while. It’s just that my brain isn’t on the same rotation schedule as the sun and it lags a few hours behind. Once I get going, I’m full steam ahead.

Most of us know when our most productive time of the day is and if you’ve done any training in time management, then you’ve been taught to schedule your complex and difficult tasks during your peak performance times slots as much as possible. In Romans 13, Paul says that Christians are “morning people” (doesn’t God have a great sense of humor?). As a child of God, I shouldn’t need a few hours to get going in living my spiritual life. Paul says that the time is just before dawn. Can you hear the urgency in his writing of Romans 13:11-14? The darkness of night battles with the beginning rays of the sun – fighting to continue covering the earth in it’s inky blackness of sin. But as the sun rises, darkness is defeated.  As the sun comes up, we get a new start to a new day, another opportunity to serve God with the gifts and talents He has given us. It’s another day to tell the good news of His birth and what Christ has done for you. It’s another opportunity for the lost person to come to the Light of the World, but that lost person is dependent on us to bring them to the Savior.

But, many Christians live – well – basically like me in the morning. Grumpy, not focused, slow, just longing to pull the covers up over my head for another 30 minutes. When we look around our world today, it’s easy to see that Christians have been asleep for far too  long. The moral decay is putrefying our world. We have sat back and allowed prayer to be removed from schools, for marriage to be redefined, to allow abortions to be legal, and to even define gender as each individual chooses. Murder, violence, and crime is at alarming rates. Humanity is tainted with greed and selfishness. Anger and bitterness is in abundance. Crime rates are always higher at night because the darkness of night helps to hide their actions. And Christians seem to be sleeping through it all. Paul calls for Christians to wake up. He tells us to discard the deeds of darkness. Paul lists six “deeds of darkness” that we are to discard: carousing, drunkenness, sexual impurity, promiscuity, quarreling, and jealousy. If we are living like the world, they will never see Christ in us. If they see nothing different about us, why would they need a Savior? Wake up. Discard the deeds of darkness.

Once we wake up, it’s time to get dressed and start our day. Paul calls for Christians to put on the armor of light and to walk with decency, as in the daylight. In John 8:12, Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” Paul also tells us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” If we have put on the Light of the World, then His light should radiate around us bringing light to the darkness of the world and chasing the darkness away – just as the sun chases away the night every morning. In Matthew 5:14-15, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Over in Galatians 3:27, Paul wrote, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” But what does it mean to “put on” a person? It’s a theatrical term that refers to playing the role of a character in such a way that you lose your own identity and become the identity of the person you are portraying. You are so intensely caught up in being the other person that your own identity almost ceases to be and instead you live and breathe the person of your role and your identity becomes that of the character role you are portraying. So if we have put on the armor of Light and Jesus is the Light of the World, and Paul tells us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ, then the child of God’s identity becomes the identity of Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:53 says, “This perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the moral puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.” The lost person’s victory over death is dependent on us.

Wake up. Get dressed. Discard the deeds of darkness. Put on the armor of light. Walk in decency as in the daylight. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Let your light shine.

But why does Paul use the word armor? First, armor is protective. When Satan hurls the fiery darts of sin and temptation our way, we are able to deflect them with the proper armor so that we have nothing to hide. When there is nothing to hide, we don’t have to worry about the light revealing our motives and actions. When we put on the armor of light, we are to satisfy God’s will for us rather than satisfying our own desires. When we put on the armor of light, we are alert to what God is doing in this world and we will be alert to those whom He puts in our path to be a witness to. We need to live with the revealing light of God shining brightly on our thoughts, motives, behaviors, words, attitudes, and lifestyles so that there is no darkness in us. 1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” The antithesis to this verse would be that if we walk in darkness then we do not have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus does not cleans us from sin.

Wake up. Get dressed. Discard the deeds of darkness. Put on the armor of light. Walk in decency as in the daylight. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Let your light shine. Walk in the light.

Armor is also used in battle and as Christians, we are constantly in a spiritual battle. It’s almost dawn and we’re in deep sleep but the bugler sounds Reveille to muster God’s soldiers for roll call. Suddenly we are awake and we look around the military encampment. Everyone is scurrying around getting ready for battle. The soldiers are putting on their armor and gathering their weapons. Who’s the enemy? Satan and his demons. In Ephesians 6:10-20, Paul tells us our enemy is not flesh and blood, but principalities, powers, rulers, authorities, world powers of darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. We are constantly right smack in the middle of conflict so we need to put on the armor of light. If we are going to stand and fight, than we need to be ready. Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:13-17 about the armor we need to put on:

This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word. (Ephesians 6:13-17)

Wake up. Get dressed. Discard the deeds of darkness. Put on the armor of light. Walk in decency as in the daylight. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Let your light shine. Walk in the light. Put on the full armor of God.

Our world today, and in Paul’s day, is still dark. The battle still rages – and fiercer than ever. But that’s how night works. Each hour is darker than the one before it but then dawn comes and a ray of light peeks through the darkness bringing light to the world. Our dawn will come will Jesus comes again. The thing about darkness and dawn is that the darker it gets, the closer we are to dawn. Paul says that we know the time  — it’s time for us to Wake up. Get dressed. Discard the deeds of darkness. Put on the armor of light. Walk in decency as in the daylight. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Let your light shine. Walk in the light. Put on the full armor of God. Bring the Light into the world.

The dawning of a new day is coming when Christ will return triumphantly. What does that mean for those trapped in the darkness of the sin and the world? They have hopelessly lost their way in the darkness of sin with nothing but eternal separation from God and eternity in Hell awaiting them. Their souls hunger for Bread of Life. They are desperate for the Living Water. They need the precious Redeemer and Friend to rescue their soul. They need to meet the Resurrection and the Life. They need to find the Way, the Truth, and the Life. It’s urgent that we act now! So, yes! Wake up, dear Christian. The bugler is sounding Reveille. God is calling us to battle. Put on the armor of light and the Lord Jesus Christ. The battle becomes fiercer as the night gets darker.  Those lost in their sin are eternally dependent on us to show them the light.

Wake up. Discard the deeds of darkness. Put on the armor of light. Walk in decency as in the daylight. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Let your light shine. Walk in the light. Put on the full armor of God. Bring the Light into the world. Stop sleeping, O Christian! The dawn is coming.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

340591: The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger

By Lee Strobel / Zondervan

Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? Some say he would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God.

Who was he really? And how can you know for sure?

Consulting experts on the Bible, archaeology, and messianic prophecy, award-winning legal journalist Lee Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger. If Jesus really was God in the flesh, then there ought to be credible evidence, including:

  • Eyewitness Evidence – Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?
  • Scientific Evidence – What does archaeology reveal?
  • Profile Evidence – Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of God?
  • Fingerprint Evidence – Did Jesus uniquely match the identity of the Messiah?

The Case for Christmas invites readers to consider why Christmas matters in the first place. Somewhere beyond the traditions of the holiday lies the truth. This little book is perfect as a gift or for use in ministry during the Christmas season or any other time of the year.

Ephesians 6:14-17. Christian Life – It’s Spiritual Warfare

by Julia Bruce

ephesians 6 14-17

I remember singing “Onward Christian Soldiers” as a kid…

“Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before. Christ, the royal Master, Leads against the foe; Forward into battle, See his banners go! Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before.”

If you know this song, you probably sang it as you read the words.

My sisters and I attended a private, Christian school for most of our school years and our mascot was “Soldiers.” Where does the idea of Christians being a soldier? 2 Timothy 2:3 says, “Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” In Ephesians chapter 6, Paul talks about putting on the armor of God. Every soldier needs to have armor, but what is the battle that a Christian soldier must fight? In verses 10-12 of Ephesians 6, Paul writes, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Yes, there is definitely a battle that constantly is raging in an unseen, heavenly realm. If we are going to go to war, then there are some things we need to know in order to fight effectively.

We can’t successfully fight a spiritual battle if we don’t recognize that it’s a spiritual battle. Every Christian fights this battle and we call it spiritual warfare. Every day, every moment there is a battle that is taking place. Paul says it is in the heavenly realms. Who is the enemy? Satan. Satan and his demons are more than just a way to explain evil in our world. The Bible tells us they are real, supernatural being who are in constant opposition to God and His people. We can’t see or hear these supernatural beings, but we definitely feel them. Paul says we are to take our stand against the devil’s schemes. Once we become a child of God, we no longer belong on the enemy’s side, but that doesn’t mean he just leaves us alone. If anything, that’s when he attacks the most. He wants to keep us from telling other people about Jesus and the power of God in our lives. He wants us to live defeated lives. We wants to destroy everything that matters to us. He will create disunity in your marriage, cause your children to turn away from you, put enmity between you and your friends, steal your dreams, cause your mind to question the truths and promises of God’s Word, crumple your self-esteem, convince you that you are not worthy to be used by God, and rob you of your God-given calling.

We can’t successfully fight a spiritual battle in human strength. Paul says that we are “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” When we talk about spiritual warfare, we are talking about fighting all the forces of evil – so you better be sure that you go into battle under the mighty power of God. It is the only way you will be able to stand strong against the schemes of the devil. Have you ever faced a problem and you tell someone about it, and they say something like, “Well, that’s just life for you.” But if we realize that Satan roams the earth seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8), and look at our problems through a spiritual lens, then we can see where Satan is fighting against us and the plans that God has for us. The result often becomes strained or broken relationships, mental health problems, physical health problems, fatigue and exhaustion, financial strain and more. Instead of living joyous, victorious, and abundant lives, we go around carrying the staggering weight of anger, pride, insecurity, unforgiveness, fear, doubt, failure, jealousy, and bitterness. We need a spiritual solution to spiritual battles. If we have any hope of defeating the Devil, we have to realize who the enemy is and that we can’t fight the battle in our own strength. We have to go into battle under the mighty power of God. As a shepherd boy, David defeated a giant because he had faith in God and depended on God. He knew the battle was not his and God would win the battle (1 Samuel 17:47). However, as a king, we find in 1 Chronicles 21:1-5, that David wanted to see how mighty his military forces were and took a census. Rather than faith and dependence on God, David was leaning on himself and the power of his army. Satan loves for us to depend on our own strength and forget the almighty strength of God.

We can’t successfully fight a spiritual battle if we don’t understand how the enemy operates. Paul says describes the ways Satan fights is by “schemes.” In John 8: 44, Jesus said that there is no truth in Satan and calls him a liar and the father of lies.” From the moment that Satan comes onto the scene in Genesis in the Garden of Eden, he has been deceiving humans. He started with Eve and he’s never stopped. Revelation 12:9 says, “and the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world.” That is how he operates – through deceit. He has always operated this way and he always will. He will try to sneak in our lives without us even realizing he is there. If we can’t recognize him, we won’t be prepared for battle and we won’t have a chance to defeat him. But he also doesn’t want us to understand how he attacks us and how he operates. His battle plan is very simple. He lies to us – and he’s had many centuries to hone his craft. He lies to us about himself, about God, about ourselves, about God’s promises, about who we are in Christ, about how we perceive others and events in life. He knows exactly where our weaknesses and vulnerabilities are and that is where he attacks and throws in a few crafty, well-constructed lies with a half-truth thrown in the middle to manipulate what God’s Word actually says so that we fall into sin. The minute we fall for his lies, the fellowship that we enjoy with our heavenly father is broken and we lose the His power in our lives. We restore our fellowship and receive a re-charge on heavenly power by confessing and repenting of sin and asking God’s forgiveness. The longer we take to seek forgiveness, the longer we are unplugged from God’s power and the weaker we become.

We can’t successfully fight a spiritual battle without knowing the truth’s of God’s Word. Because the Bible is God’s Word (not Satan’s Word), we need to realize that it is a book about God. Certainly it gives us information we need about the devil, but it’s focus in on God and that is where our focus should be. As we study the Bible, we learn that Satan is a real and very big problem – but it isn’t our only problem. Ephesias 2:1-3 says we have three enemies: the devil, the world, and our flesh. The devil can tempt us and deceive us through lies, but just as Jesus resisted Satan’s lies and temptations, so can we. Jesus resisted by knowing Scripture. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” If we are going to resist the schemes of the devil, we must memorize scripture and understand the truths of the Bible. Then when Satan comes knocking with temptations, we will be prepared to defeat him just as Jesus did.

The Bible also teaches us that God is in control of everything – including Satan. We learn this in Job where Satan comes before God and God says, “Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.” Satan then accuses God of putting a hedge of protection around Job and that if God removes it then Job will curse God. God then says, ” Very well, everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself.” Satan cannot do anything that God does not allow him to do. The fact that there is enmity between Satan and humans is that God said it would be so as a result of Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15). That enmity continued all the way to the cross where Jesus defeated Satan and the power of sin in a Christian’s life. Just as God gave control of all that Job owned (and later even allowed him to strike at Job himself), God allows Satan to bring difficult circumstances into our lives as God works to shape and mold us into being more like Christ and to prepare us for the plans He has for us.  We can know that God is in control of anything Satan wants to bring our way because he is already a defeated enemy. Satan has no more authority over the children of God, except when they give it to him by believing his lies. When Jesus gave us the example of how to pray, he said, “And deliver us from the Evil One, for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.” Satan may have power on the kingdom for now and he may roam the earth seeking whom he may devour, but ultimately it belongs to Jesus who purchased it with his blood as he hung on the cross. He defeated Satan, death, hell, and the grave when he rose from the grave. God might give Satan power, but God is all powerful and He is always in control.

We can’t successfully fight a spiritual battle without spiritual armor. We need to understand that God intends for us to be on the offense in the battle – not the defense. Paul said that we are to stand against Satan. In fact, in this one chapter (Ephesians 6), Paul tells us “to stand” three times.  So God provided spiritual armor. It’s purpose is not for us to defend ourselves, but so that we march into the battle and do the work that God has called us to do – make disciples. The moment we begin witnessing, helping Christians grow, plant new churches, and serve God, is the moment we begin encroaching into the enemy’s territory and you can bet he and his forces will attack.  This is why Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God. A soldier that goes into battle with only part of his armor can expect defeat. We need every piece and we need to know the purpose of each piece. We find a description of the Armor of God in Ephesians 6:13-18. It includes the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation,  and the sword of the Spirit. So we know what is included in our armor, but what is the purpose for each piece? When Paul compares the armor of God with military gear, each piece represents a part of God’s strength that He extends to us when we become His children.

  • Belt of truth: Paul said we should have our loins girt about with the belt of truth. Remember how Satan operates? Through deception and lies. The only way to get rid of lies is by shining the truth on them. You can’t know the truth if you are not studying God’s Word. We must know it, believe it, and speak it if we are to defeat Satan’s lies.
  • Breastplate of righteousness: In Paul’s day, the Roman soldier wore a breastplate made of bronze or chain mail. It’s purpose was to cover the heart. For the Christian, the breastplate is the righteousness of Christ. The moment you became a Christian, Christ clothed you in His righteousness. This breastplate is meant to protect our hearts and souls from the deception of the evil one. We need the righteousness of Christ because Isaiah 64:6 says, “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.” So because our righteous deeds do not measure up to protect us from Satan, Christ gives us His.
  • Gospel of peace: The gospel of peace is the message that Jesus gives to those who trust in Him. Prior to salvation, we were enemies with God, but when we chose to believe in Christ and asked Him to be our savior, we became at peace with Him. It tells us how to become a child of God and it includes such promises that we can know we are His children (John 10:29) and that nothing can snatch us out of His hand (1 John 5:13). In Ephesians 6, Paul says we are to shod our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. If we are to be “prepared” we must always be on guard with our feet firmly planted and ready to hold our ground whenever the enemy attacks. 2 Timothy 4:2 says we are to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season.” We must always be prepared. The Roman soldier often had shoes that contained nails or spikes much like football cleats, so that he could dig them into the ground for a firm stance and better balance. If he lost his footing and fell, he lost the battle. For the Christian, the gospel of peace shoes allow us to dig down and plant our feet on the solid ground of the truth of God’s Word to fight back and defeat Satan’s flaming darts of doubt and lies.

The Roman soldier didn’t just need to stand his ground in battle. He also had long marches. When we put on our shoes of the gospel of peace, God expects us to carry His Gospel to others.

  • Shield of faith: Paul tells us that with the shield of faith, we will be able to quench all the fiery darts of Satan. We are not to waver in our faith no matter how strong Satan’s attack. Instead we should fully trust God’s promises. Roman soldiers carried a shield that was as big as a door, providing him with complete cover. He could also use it to push his way through the battle line and push his enemies back. Often, the shield was painted with identifying marks. As a Christian, our shield of faith carries the identifying mark of Christ and distinguishes as a soldier in the Lord’s army. When Satan attacks with his lies that fuels doubts, it is faith the prompts us to believe God’s promises so that the lies of Satan lose their power and we overcome his attack. This is how our faith shields us from Satan’s attacks.
  • Helmet of salvation: The Roman soldier wore a helmet to protect his head. As a Christian the helmet of salvation protects our mind where Satan will attach us more than any other way. He will twist his lies into a tangled mass that become difficult to unravel if do not view them the lens of the Word of God. As a Christian, our salvation gives us new and different view than we had when we were lost. The assurance we have of our salvation is our ultimate defense. Philippians 2:5 says, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” And in 1 Corinthians 2:16 we are told that we are to have the mind of Christ. The helmet of salvation gives us the power to “destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raise against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5). We utilize the helmet of salvation by renewing our minds (Romans 12:1-2) by:
    • exchanging ungodly ideas, thoughts, and opinions with the truths and promises of God’s Word
    • rejecting the doubts that Satan whispers by choosing to believe in God’s love and His promises to us (Hebrews 11:6, 1 Peter 1:8-9)
    • keeping our perspective on the eternal by keeping our eyes on Jesus and determining what’s important through lens of eternity.  (Matthew 6:20, 1 Corinthians 3:11-13)
    • remembering that Jesus already won the victory and that we are a new creation (Romans 6:11, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 John 3:9)
    • remembering our hope is in Christ. (Psalm 73:25)
    • choosing to guard our minds from the influences of the world by dwelling our thoughts on things that honor God (Philippians 4:8)
  • Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: While all the other pieces of armor are protective, the Sword is the only offensive weapon. However, if you are not daily studying the Word of God and memorizing it then you are going into battle with no weapon. Remember that Jesus defeated the temptations of Satan by saying, “It is written…”

No matter what the enemy attacks us with, God has prepared us to withstand the attacks, but we have to choose to put on the armor – every day. So soldier, suit up! Power up with the Word of God, and pray up to have the power of God.
