Throughout the Gospels, Jesus usually preferred to refer to Himself as “Son of Man.” However, here, when Caiaphas, the high priest, questioned Jesus and asked Him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus responded with, “I AM.” This was more than a confession of identity.
The first time we see “I AM” as a name for God is in Exodus 3:14 when Moses asks God who he should tell the Israelites who sent him and God replies with, “Tell them I AM has sent you.” When God said to Moses, “I AM THAT I AM,” he was revealing both a promise and a pledge that was actually a part of His name. The Hebrew words are ehyeh asher ehyeh can be more accurately translated, “I will be what I will be.” It was God’s way of promising to Moses and Israel that God would be what they needed Him to be. At that time, the Israelites were crying out to God because they were slaves in Egypt and they needed a deliverer. God would be their deliverer.
Jesus, standing before the high priest again says, “I AM.” He was not simply confessing who He was – He was once again promising to be what we need Him to be. We too need a deliverer – someone to deliver us from our sin and condemnation. Jesus would become what we needed Him to become – the sacrificial Lamb as atonement for our sins. He would become our Savior.
Lord, thank you for being exactly what we needed – our Savior. Thank you for continuing to be what we need in every moment of every day because we humbly acknowledge that in every moment of every day, we need you. Thank you for being our I AM.
