Each day between December 1-25, we will look at one of the traditional symbols of Christmas, what these symbols mean and how they tell the Christmas story of our Savior’s birth.

The Poinsettia

Most Christmas greenery reflect European traditions. But one colorful plant which looks like a flaming star, the poinsettia, is a native to Central America. It was named after Joel Robert Poinsett. He was the first Ambassador from the USA to Mexico in 1825.

The Legend of the Poinsettia

There is an old Mexican legend about how Poinsettias became a Christmas tradition. In the legend, a poor Mexican girl named Pepita had no present to give to baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve Service. She walked sadly to the chapel but her cousin tried to cheer her up, telling her, “I’m sure that even the smallest gift, given by someone who loves Him will make Jesus happy.”

Still Pepita didn’t know what she could give. Looking around her, she spotted some weeds by the side of the road, so she picked a small handful and made them into a tiny bouquet. Embarrassed that this was all she had to give to Jesus, she continued to walk to the chapel. When she approached the altar, she knelt down and put the bouquet at the bottom of the nativity scene. Suddenly, the bouquet of weeds burst into bright red flowers, and everyone who saw them were sure they had seen a miracle. From that day on, the bright red flowers were known as the “Flores de Noche Buena”, or “Flowers of the Holy Night.”

In the Bible, we find the story of a widow who gave all she had at the temple. As Jesus saw her cast in her last two coins, he said to the disciples that she had given more than all the rich people because she had given her all. When we give our all, Jesus knows it and nothing that we have to offer is ever too small or insignificant.

The symbolism of the Poinsettia

The shape of the poinsettia flower and leaves are sometimes thought as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem which led the Wise Men to Jesus. The red colored leaves symbolize the blood of Christ. The white leaves represent his purity.

Evergreens

The most striking and most universal feature of Christmas is the use of evergreens. Among ancient Romans, evergreens were an emblem of peace, joy and victory. The early Christians placed them in their windows to indicate that Christ had entered the home.

Why they are called evergreens

Holly and Ivy, along with pine, and fir are called evergreens because they never change color. They are ever —green, ever — alive, even in the midst of winter. They symbolize the unchanging nature of our God, and they remind us of the everlasting life that is ours through Christ Jesus. In ancient times, holly and ivy were considered signs of Christ’s passion. Their prickly leaves suggested the crown of thorns. The red berries represented the blood He shed. And the bitter bark is a symbol of the drink offered to Jesus on the cross.

Evergreen Wreathes

Isaiah tells us that there will be no end to the reign of the Messiah. Therefore, we hang wreaths of evergreens shaped in a circle, which itself has no end, to signify the eternal reign of Jesus Christ.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Isaiah 9:7 (ESV)

In Isaiah 40:13, we find these words: “The Glory of Lebanon shall come unto you the fir tree, the pine tree and the box together, to beautify the place of your sanctuary.” Today, we use these evergreens to beautify our homes as we celebrate Christmas. Our forefathers called the procuring of these evergreens, “Bringing home Christmas!”

The Meanings of Christmas is found in our traditions

A star in the sky, carols in the evening air, a candle in the window, a wreath on the door, garland and mistletoe hung high, poinsettias aflame with brilliant color, gifts beneath a lighted tree, friends around the holiday table, families reunited in love, church bells ringing….they all play a part in the meanings of Christmas. These symbols that we use to decorate and celebrate tell about our Savior’s birth.

Each country has it’s own unique ways of celebrating Christmas. Families create unique traditions. Yet many of us weave the basic symbols and meanings of Christmas into our holiday traditions. It is a holiday made of rich treasures of customs and traditions, woven into a pattern with each country or family’s personal threads, giving to us the colorful pageantry of our Christmas celebration.

The symbols and meanings of Christmas decorations tell the Christmas story

As we celebrate the season, we decorate our homes, churches, and our communities. Many of the decorations that we use today represent a part of the Christmas story. As we move through this series of posts between now Christmas day, these meanings of Christmas will be unwrapped. Then as you decorate your homes, enjoy your traditions, gaze upon the community decorations, I pray that you will be reminded of these meanings as you prepare for the birthday celebration of our risen King. May they bring the story of Savior birth alive in your hearts.

Let us, through the great traditions of our faith, join with the shepherds of Bethlehem, the wise men from the east, the seekers throughout the ages, to welcome the One who came at Christmas. Let us at Christmastide bring grifts to Him, and may the message of our songs be “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth Peace and goodwill to peoples everywhere.”

Each day between December 1-25, we will look at one of the traditional symbols of Christmas, what these symbols mean and how they tell the Christmas story of our Savior’s birth.

Many of us long for the simple beauty of Christmas — for all the old familiar melodies, words, and symbols that remind us of that great miracle of when our Savior was born in a lowly stable and held in the arms of his virgin mother. Yet over the years, the symbolisms and meanings of Christmas has moved away from a celebration of our Savior’s birth to a commercialized, profit-making event of Santa, Frosty the Snowman, and giving gifts to each other while giving no gifts to Jesus.

As the shepherd came to worship Him, so we bow before Him in worship today. As the wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, so we bring Him the gift of our love, praise and adoration. And we bring Him our gratitude for the blessings He has given us during the years that have gone.

As we begin this four-week journey of expectation and hope, known as Advent, may we do it in a manner well pleasing to Christ. May all we do and say, and every tribute of our hearts, bring honor to His name. May we, Your people, remember His birth and feel His presence among us this Christmas season.

It’s time for a change of focus

It’s time that we change our focus from a commercialized Christmas to the true meaning of Christmas and the symbols and meanings of Christmas can help us reflect on our Savior’s birth. Even as we long for the simple beauty of Christmas, let us even more yearn for Christ’s renewed presence among us.

My hope for you, as you discover — or re-discover — the meanings and symbolism behind our Christmas decorations, that you will remember the birth of Jesus, share in the song of the angles, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the wise men. This holiday season, let’s celebrate His birth with song, joy, and true worship.

As we enter the season of Advent, we pray this year will be different. This Christmas, may we stop rushing, take time to breathe and take notice of Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with the joy, love, and grace that Salvation brings. Join us each day on a journey of remembering the symbols and meanings of Christmas. Merry Christmas.
