Acceptable Words

Is Jesus Lord of All – Including Your Words?

As Christians, we say that Jesus is Lord of our lives. If that is true, then Jesus would be Lord of our words as well as our deepest thoughts, emotions, and feelings. Julia M. Bruce

As Christians, we say that Jesus is Lord of our lives. If that is true, then Jesus would be Lord of our words, as well as our deepest thoughts, emotions, and feelings. We can’t say that Jesus is Lord of our lives and then use cuss words or vulgar words. Neither can we say that He is Lord of our lives but carry around anger, bitterness, and resentment towards others. The prayer of the psalmist in Psalm 19:14, should be our prayer every day: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight.” So, then, what words and thoughts are acceptable to God?

We can’t say that Jesus is Lord of our lives and then use cuss words or vulgar words. Neither can we say that He is Lord of our lives but carry around anger, bitterness, and resentment towards others. – Julia M. Bruce

Acceptable Words are Words of Blessing

I have no doubt that our words can be a far more powerful weapon than even the atom bomb. Our words can either be the biggest blessing or deepest wound. We can either use our words to edify (build up) others as we speak life into them or we can cause hurt as we tear them down. Our words can either encourage and comfort others or we can ridicule and shame them. And we can speak truth and life or lies and deceit.

Our words can either be a blessing or the deepest wound. We can either edify (build up) others or tear them down. We can encourage and comfort or ridicule and shame. And we can speak truth and life or lies and deceit. Julia M. Bruce

Read the following verses to see what the Bible has to say about the power of our words:

Old Testament verses:

  • There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18
  • Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Proverbs 13:3 –
  • A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1
  • A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. Proverbs 15:4
  • Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Proverbs 16:24
  • Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21
  • Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. Proverbs 21:23

New Testament verses:

  • I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak. Matthew 12:36
  • Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
  • But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Colossians 3:8
  • Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt so that you may know how you out to answer each person. Colossians 4:6
  • If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. James 1:26

God expects us to use our words to build each other, not tear each other down.

Acceptable Words Pray a Blessing on Others

Did you know that the Nation of Israel had a prayer of blessing they would pray over each other? Listen to the words of this prayer found in Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”

How would our world be different if we prayed this prayer of blessing over others – even the people we don’t like? What if we memorized this prayer of blessing and when someone cuts us off in traffic we pray the prayer of blessing? Or if our boss treats us unfairly, we pray the prayer of blessing over him or her? What if our spouse does or says something hurtful we pray the prayer of blessing? Would not our world be different?

Acceptable Words are Praise and Adoration to God

Another way our words are acceptable to God is when we acknowledge His work in our lives and give Him the praise, honor and glory that is due Him. However, we can’t worship Him with our words on Sunday, but then cuss Monday through Saturday. Neither can we sing praise songs to Him in the worship service but then stand around the break room at work and tell dirty jokes, gossip, or ridicule others. We can’t lift our hands in worship to Him on Sunday, but come home to say negative and disparaging words about someone of another race.

If our mouth is speaking cuss words, telling dirty jokes, gossip, ridicule, and racial slurs, then that is what our heart is full of and there isn’t much room for praise and adoration for our God and our Savior. Julia M. Bruce

If our heart is full of cuss words, dirty jokes, gossip, ridicule, and racial slurs, it begs the question: Is our worship, praise, and adoration genuine – or is it just motions we go through as we play the part of “Christian”? Julia M. Bruce

Where Words are Birthed

Not only should our words be acceptable to God, but also our thoughts and emotions because the words that exit from our mouths begin in the thoughts of our hearts. Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” In Matthew 15:18, He said, “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart.” And in Matthew 12:34, Jesus also said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Before the word is said, the thought is formed. So if our mouth is speaking cuss words, telling dirty jokes, gossip, ridicule, and racial slurs, then that is what our heart is full of and there isn’t much room for praise and adoration for our God and our Savior. In fact, if our heart is full of those things, it begs the question: Is our worship, praise, and adoration genuine – or is it just motions we go through as we play the part of “Christian” while around other Christians in church on Sunday?

Dwell on these Acceptable Words

The psalmist also prayed that the meditations of his heart would be acceptable. These are the thoughts that dwell within us. What are the kinds of words and thoughts we should dwell on? The Bible tells us what they are.

Paul wrote a list of things in Philippians 4:8 that we should let our mind dwell on. He said, “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise — dwell on these things.” If we allow our hearts and minds to dwell on these – then out of the abundance of these thoughts our mouth will speak and our words and thoughts will both be acceptable to God.

The words that exit our mouths begin in the thoughts of our hearts. If we dwell on the good things in Philippians 4:8, then out of the abundance of these thoughts our words and thoughts will be acceptable to God. Julia M. Bruce

Matthew 12:34 Our Mouth Reveals Our Heart

Jan 17 Matthew 12 34

Almost every kids knows the saying, “Stick and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” There is never a saying more untrue! In fact, words often hurt more than physical wounds. Psychologists have found that the memories of hurtful words linger far longer than physical hurt. Guy Winch, Ph.D., listed five reasons that emotional pain is worse than physical:

  1. Memories Trigger Emotional Pain But Not Physical Pain. Recalling the time you broke your leg will not make your leg hurt but recalling the time you felt rejected by your high-school crush will cause you substantial emotional pain.
  2. We Use Physical Pain as Distraction from Emotional Pain Not Vice Versa. We rarely see a woman choosing to manage the pain of natural childbirth by rereading the rejection letter from her college of choice but teens will practice “cutting” as a way to relieve and distract themselves from deep emotional pain.
  3. Physical Pain Garners Far More Empathy from Others Than Emotional Pain. When we see a stranger get hit by a car we wince, gasp, or even scream and run to see if they’re OK. But when we see a stranger get bullied or taunted we are unlikely to do any of those things.
  4. Emotional Pain Echoes in Ways Physical Pain Does Not. If you got a call about your parent dying while you were having a romantic lobster meal with your partner on Valentine’s Day, it will probably be a few years before you can enjoy lobster or Valentine’s Day without becoming extremely sad. But if you broke your foot playing softball in an amateur league you will likely be back on the field as soon as you’re fully healed.
  5. Emotional Pain but Not Physical Pain Can Damage Our Self-Esteem and Long-Term Mental Health. Physical pain has to be quite extreme to affect our personalities and damage our mental health but even single episodes of emotional pain can damage our emotional health.

(you can read the complete article here)

It’s true that our words impact those around us – both positively and negatively – and we can be both intentional and unintentional in hurting others with what we say. Sometimes our words don’t convey exactly what we’re intending to communicate. For example, here are a few announcements found in actual church bulletins:

  • This being Easter Sunday, we will ask Mrs. Smith to come forward and lay an egg on the altar.
  • The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind, and they may be seen in the church basement on Friday afternoon.
  • This afternoon there will be a meeting in the South and North ends of the church. Children will be baptized at both ends.

While the above bulletin bloopers are simply poor grammar and word choices on the part of the writer, sometimes we say critical or unkind things as if they were a joke. However, if we are honest with ourselves, usually we feel there is some amount of truth to what we are saying when we are “just kidding”. We try to cleverly attempt to wrap up harsh words in a pun or some other attempt at humor, but such words still hurt.

Jesus taught that it is from the abundance of our heart that our mouth speaks. If it were not in our heart, it probably would not be coming out of our mouth. Our words shows our character and the character we should be showing is the glory of God in whom we are made in His image. Let’s make sure the words that are spoken come from a heart that is focused and in fellowship with our Savior. Make sure the words that spring forth from your heart and come out of your mouth build others up – not tear them down.

memory verse logoDon’t forget to memorize this week’s memory verse:

In 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem. You will begin to see the elements of our website and posts reflect this emphasis. We hope you’ll join us in praying for God to pour out the Holy Spirit with a mighty rushing wind of revival for our nation and around the world.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  Our verse last week focused on humbling ourselves. This week, we’ll focus on praying.

This week’s memory verse:

Jeremiah 29:12

Then you will call upon me and come and
pray to me, and I will hear you.

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

983362: Pray Big: Learn to Pray Like an Apostle Pray Big: Learn to Pray Like an Apostle

By Alistair Begg / Good Book Company

So many of us struggle with prayer. Many books have been written on the subject and there’s a reason for that. Prayer comes hard to most of us, in most seasons. And when we do pray, we often don’t know what to say. What is it that my Father loves to hear about? What are the best things I could pray for my family, my church, and myself?

This short book by renowned Bible teacher Alistair Begg combines warmth, clarity, humor, and practicality as he examines Paul’s prayers for his friends in the church in Ephesus. Paul clearly enjoyed prayer, and was excited about it. He expected his Father in heaven to hear what he said, and to act in other people’s lives accordingly. The truths that underpin and shape his prayers will motivate us to pray and set us an example.

So be inspired by the Apostle Paul to pray bigger and better prayers as we look to our heavenly Father to do more than all we ask or imagine!

Couple Challenge: Conversation Starter

As a married couple, you are part of a team. A good team can communicate well. They have united goals and work towards a common end. Each person on the team contributes to their fair share of the responsibilities. Team members support one another, just as ligaments support and join together our bodies. They understand and accept the uniqueness of each other. They recognize the skills and strengths each person brings to a team, as well as the weaknesses, and they work together to build up the weaknesses. A good team has a strong leader. A good team knows how to both work and have fun. They know when to get down to business and when they need to rest. Which of these areas shows your marriage is a good team? Which are lacking or not present? What can you do to be a better team?
