Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Cuss words have become such a normal part of life, that we barely even acknowledge them as cuss words any more. When someone takes the Lord’s name in vain, they are using His name in a perverse way. in a manner that is wicked, worthless, or for wrong purposes. This doesn’t mean that we have to avoid the divine name altogether. The name YHWH (or Yahweh)—“the Lord,” in most translations—appears some seven thousand times in the Old Testament. We don’t need to be afraid to say his name. But we must not misuse it.

What classified as saying God’s name in vain?

The Old Testament identifies several ways in which we can be guilty of using God’s name in vain. The most obvious is to blaspheme or curse the name of God. But there’s more to the commandment than that. It also forbids empty or false oaths: “You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord” (Lev. 19:12; Hos. 10:4a). When you make a declaration, swearing by God’s name, it must not be a false promise or one you do not intend to keep.

This commandment also prohibits false visions and false claims to speak on God’s behalf, for such prophets “prophesy lies in my name” (Jer. 23:25). Strangely enough, sacrificing one’s children to the false god Molech was considered a violation of the third commandment because it profaned the name of God (Lev. 18:21). The Israelites were to stone the man who sacrificed his children in this way. Failure to do so would allow for uncleanness to permeate the camp, thereby besmirching the name of the Lord, who dwelt in the midst of his people. Would God see abortion in the same way?

The Need for Revival

  1. Taking God’s name in vain goes beyond using it as a cuss word and as a nation, we’re guilty on all accounts.
  2. Spend some quiet moments with the Holy Spirit and ask Him to show any ways you are guilty of breaking this commandment.
  3. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how our nation is guilty of breaking this commandment.

Praying for Revival

Father, your name is holy and righteous. Jesus taught to pray, “hallowed be thy name.” But we take your name so lightly. Forgive us. Convict us and help us come to realize just how hallowed your name is. Almighty God, may we praise and glorify your name, respect and fear your name, and have a reverential awe for holy name. Lord, send a revival and show us your glory.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

God’s Starting Point

What’s the impossible in your life? In Matthew 19:26, Jesus said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” When you reach the point of impossible – that’s where God starts.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Worshiping idols and false gods was rampant in the days of Moses. It isn’t much different today. But even those who are Christians can be guilty of having idols. They may not be graven images – but idols still exist. We can be guilty of making idols out of relationships, children, careers, hobbies, sports, money, and possessions. Anything we give a higher priority to than God is an idol and we then become guilty of breaking the first commandment.

God is a jealous God?

We typically view jealous as bad. But God has every right to be jealous. He is our creator and He is the ONLY God by which we can be saved from our sins. Yet we look to so many other things or people or even false gods for happiness. God’s jealousy looks quite different from how we view or define jealousy. The Hebrew word translated “jealous” in the Ten Commandments is qanna (קַנָּא) It is only used to describe God and is related to another word that means “zeal.” Common synonyms for “zeal” are passion, enthusiasm, and fervor. When God says He is a jealous God, His  jealousy is righteous and holy. God is jealous for his relationship with his people because He passionately loves them and does not want them to be destroyed by idolatry.

The Need for Revival

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any idols you have in your life. Seek God’s forgiveness and then return God to the place of honor due Him.

Praying for Revival

Father, we confess to you in this moment the idols we’ve made in our lives. Forgive us for setting these things and people in a place of priority and honor over you. Lord, today I ask that you take the place of honor in my life.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Once free from slavery, the Israelites rejoiced in how God brought the out of Egypt and across the Red Sea on dry ground. Then they arrive in Marah where there was “bitter” water. Their songs of praise quickly turned to crys of complaint. So Moses prays. God shows Moses a tree and when it was tossed into the waters the water became “sweet” — or drinkable. God then tells the people that if they listen to Him and obey Him, He will not place any of the diseases on them that He put on the Egyptians. In the plagues, God made the waters turned to blood, brought a swarm of frogs, followed by the plague of lice, then flies. Next there was the plague on the cattle that caused them to die. Then there was the plague of boils. After that was the plague of hail that ruined the crops. What the hail didn’t destroy the plague of locusts consumed. Then there was the plague of darkness. The final plague was the death of all the Egyptians first born children and first born animals. The plagues came because Pharaoh wouldn’t acknowledge God and would not obey God and let the Israelites go. It took the entire nation of Egypt going through all these plagues before Pharaoh relented.

Words for today

Who would have thought that in this century with all our modernized medical advancements that we would see a worldwide plague or pandemic? But it is here. The simple truth is this world has no more listened to, obeyed, or acknowledged God any more than Pharaoh did. It took Pharaoh 10 plagues to get the message. How many do we need to go through – or how long does COVID had to be around for us to get the message?

The Need for Revival

  1. If we want God to heal our land, we need to follow God’s prescription and it’s found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal their land.

Praying for Revival

Father, we have not listened to you or obeyed your commandments. Our nation has attempted to wipe out your commandments and traded Godly living for ungodly living. As a nation we’ve chose to live the way we wanted, not the way you called us to live. God, it’s time for your people – the Christians – to stop being complacent and to get on their knees before you in repentance and seeking your face. We need to turn from our complacency and be burdened for this world. We need to listen to you and obey your commandments. Forgive us father. Bring healing to our land.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

It is both humorous and sad that when Pharaoh has enough of the plague of frogs, he calls Moses in and asks him to pray to God to take away the frogs. Moses says, “Certainly. Set the time, When do you want the frogs out of here?” Pharaoh’s response is…”tomorrow.” These frogs were EVERYWHERE! They could sit, sleep, or eat without frogs. And can you imagine the noise of all those frogs? But instead of asking God to get rid of them immediately, Pharaoh chose to spend one more night with the frogs.

One more night with the frogs

As we see events unfold around us in our nation and in our world, how long are we willing to live with the way things are before we pray and ask God to change things? Our hearts have become as hardened as Pharaohs and we must be content to accept the way things are. But if you’re tired of the way things are, you’ll find change when you’re on your knees with a heart surrendered, broken, and humbled before God.

The Need for Revival

  1. Whether its Covid, political unrest, or crime, do you want one more night?
  2. Take time to humble yourself before God, seek His face and ask Him to reveal sin in your own heart that needs to be dealt with.
  3. Beseech God on behalf of our nation to turn our nation back to God and heal our land.

Praying for Revival

Father, we don’t want one more night with the way things are. We come to you with a humble and contrite heart, seeking your forgiveness for our complacency that has allowed our nation to go so far away from you. We ask you to restore peace in our nation, to stop the spread of Covid, and to create a desire in the hearts of our people to be a nation that honors you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

In Exodus 6, God renews his covenant with Moses. At this point, Moses has gone to Pharaoh, asked for the people to be released, Pharaoh said no, and then increased the workload on the Israelites. The people being to complain about Moses and so Moses prays. At the end of chapter 5, we find his prayer. Verses 22-23 say, “Moses went back to God and said, “My Master, why are you treating this people so badly? And why did you ever send me? From the moment I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, things have only gotten worse for this people. And rescue? Does this look like rescue to you?” Moses did what God told him to do, so why did things get worse? Why did Pharaoh not let the people go? Isn’t it supposed to work out good when God tells us to do something?

Unexpected Results

We, like Moses, can get discouraged when we feel like God’s told us to do something and it isn’t turning out the way we thought it would. Maybe life gets harder – just like for Israel. Maybe things just haven’t happened as quickly as we thought they would.

The truth is, when we do what God wants us to do, Satan will do everything he can to try to stop God’s plan. But we know that God is greater than anything Satan can do. One of the ways Satan tries to thwart God’s plans is by getting us discouraged with unexpected results. More Christians give up and stop praying simply because of being discouraged. Instead, take your discouragement to God and allow him to renew His plans and will to you, to re-energize you.

The Need for Revival

  1. Have you been praying for revival, but discouraged because we’ve not seen it yet? Ask God to give you eyes to see where He is at work to bring revival to our nation.
  2. For our nation to “wake up,” things might have to get worse before they get better. Ask God to give you strength to get through the trials and to continue to be light and salt in the world.

Praying for Revival

Father, we long to see you move and work in our nation, quickly and mightily. But we’ve turned so far away from you that things might have to get worse before hearts will turn back to you. Help us to not grow weary in praying for revival. Bring us out from under the darkness of sin that is so prevalent in our nation. Rescue us from the grips of sin and Satan. Redeem us, we pray. Intervene with great acts of revival. Take us as your own people. Be our God. We acknowledge that you are Jehovah, Yahweh, God Almighty, the great I AM. We, your people, surrender our hearts and will to you. And we seek your face and we turn from our wicked ways. Now, oh Lord, we ask that you hear us from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.
