Leviticus 26-37

Mark 2

Walk. Keep. Do.

Sometimes we go through life, praying very hard for something that matters deeply to us and we wonder why God doesn’t answer.  Sometimes, we feel like God is far away in way-off-distant Heaven. And sometimes, we feel as if God doesn’t care about what we are going through. When we hit these snags in life, it’s usually a good idea to stop and take a self inventory of where we are spiritually. Are we living obediently? Are we radiating Christ? Do we spend time in Bible study and prayer? Do we walk God’s statutes, keep His commandments, and do them?

The “If…Then” promises

God told Israel that IF they walked in His statues, kept His commandments, and do them, THEN they would see the blessings of God in their lives. We can’t go through life living any way we want to and expect God to bless the mess we make in the process. We have to live obedient lives to Him and to His commandments…and do what His Word says.

My dad once used a sermon illustration about a woman who decided that every time she came to something in the Bible that she didn’t like, she’d just cut that section out. We can’t name and claim all the promises and choose to ignore all the warnings and commands. God is an “all or nothing” God. It only takes one sin for you to become a sinner – and it doesn’t matter if that sin is telling a small lie or committing a felony. Only one sin and we are out of fellowship with God.

Walk in My Statutes

Walking gives the idea of going down a path. Each of us much choose if we will walk a path of rebellion against God or if we will walk in His statutes. The word “Statute” is the Hebrew word Choq (Strong’s: H2706) It is a condition or civil enactment from God, an ordinance, a limit, or something prescribed. The word “requirement” could be used to define choq.

According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary, this word means “statute, prescription, rule, law, regulation” and can refer to laws of nature (Job 28:26; Jeremiah 5:22; 31:35–36) or what is allocated, rationed, or apportioned to someone (Genesis 47:22; Exodus 29:28).

So, a statute is a decree, requirement or boundary that God set in place for our good.

If we want to walk in God’s statutes, we need to know what they are. Here are five statutes that God gives us in His Word:

  1. Love God (with your heart, soul, and might) Deuteronomy 6:1-9
  2. Listen to God’s voice and His commandments. Exodus 15:25-26
  3. Seek God entirely; focus on His commandments. Deuteronomy 6:1-9
  4. Do what God considers to be right; walk in God’s ways; commit no wrong. Psalm 119:1-8
  5. Obey God’s laws, testimonies, and righteous rules. Ezekiel 26:26-27

Keep my commandments

So we are to walk in God’s statutes, but we are also to keep His commandments. The word “commandment” refers to the comprehensive list of laws or body of laws given by the Lord in the Books of Moses. It is the Hebrew word “Mitsvah” (Strongs: H4687, from H6680) which means “a commandment of men or God, a commandment out of a code of wisdom.” If we go back to the root word, “Tsavah” (H6680) we find a more helpful definition. Tsavah mean “to lay a charge upon”, “to command”, “to charge”, to give orders”, or “to appoint.” Using this, we can then see that a commandment is an order to do something, or a charge given to us to watch over and keep, and to follow, such as the Ten Commandments God gave to Moses at Mt. Saini.

Do Them

It’s one thing to read the Bible and know what it says. It’s a whole other matter to keep His commandment, and something else entirely to actually do what the Bible says. But James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” It isn’t enough to just know God’s Word. You have to do it. Satan probably knows the entire Bible from memory including the Table of Contents, the dictionary and the concordance in the back. He doesn’t even need to glance at the maps in the back because he’s been roaming the earth seeking whom he can devour since the Garden of Eden. He probably knows it in every language and in every translation. But he will still spend eternity in hell. Knowing isn’t enough.

Walk. Keep. Do.

Only when we walk in His statutes, keep His commandments, and live obediently to His Word can we expect for God to bless us. When we are living according to His Word, then we are walking in His will and we will do what He’s planned for us to do. Whenever we are in God’s Will and walking in His way, then we can be assured that His blessings will come – even if we have to go through a trial or two first so that He can teach us something new.

What does your spiritual self-inventory look like today: Are you walking in His statutes, keeping His commandments, and doing them?

A King’s Last Words to His Son

The book of 1 Kings begins with the end of King David’s life. He has named his son, Solomon, as his successor. With Solomon taking over the kingdom, David has some last words of wisdom to pass down to his son. In a king’s last words to his son, we find six statements that every father (and mother) should desire to teach their son.

A King’s Last Words to His Son: Be strong.

David knew that ruling a kingdom, especially the kingdom of God’s chosen people, was not an easy task. In fact, from the time Samuel anointed David king over Saul, David had to fight for the kingship. His own son, Absalom attempted to take the kingdom from him. He wanted Solomon to be a strong leader – but one who had a heart to follow God. The power that ruling can bring can either be used for good or bad and David desired Solomon to be a good king who could stand up for the kingdom and keep the Israelites following God. So Solomon needed to be strong defend the kingdom, but he also needed to be strong in the Lord.

A King’s Last Words to His Son: Prove yourself a man.

Solomon was still a young man. He had not fought the battles that David had fought. He still had lots to learn. Solomon was not the warrior that Absalom and Adonijah was. Despite the fact that David had already promised Bathsheba that Solomon would be the next king, David does not stop Adonijah from trying to take the throne. Through the prophet Nathan, God had to remind David that God had chosen Solomon to rule next. So David wanted his son to “prove himself a man.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 says, “Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” David wanted Solomon to be courageous for God and serve Him with boldness and zeal.

A King’s Last Words to His Son: Keep the charge of the Lord

God had called Solomon to be the next king, one that came with huge responsibility. David wanted Solomon to stay true to his calling. To do so would require that Solomon stay close to God.

A King’s Last Words to His Son: Walk in His ways.

Israel’s biggest struggle had always been following what everyone else was doing and worshiping false Gods. David wanted Solomon to follow the ways of God, to worship Him only and to lead Israel to do the same. To do so would require Solomon to saturate every part of his life with the principles of God’s Word.

A King’s Last Words to His Son: To keep God’s statutes, commandments, judgments, and testimonies.

David had learned the hard way what stepping out of God’s commands could cost. He wanted His son to remember every command and law of God, as well as the judgments God had rendered when Israel stepped out of God’s will. He also wanted Solomon to remember all the mighty things God had done for Israel and to place his faith and trust in the God that had provided and protected the nation.

A King’s Last Words to His Son: That you may prosper in whatever you do and wherever you go.

David knew the importance of God’s blessing and that the way to receive His blessing was to stay within His will by walking in obedience to all God instructed. God’s blessing is a supernatural, wonderful, and unlimited goodness given only by God. Psalm 1:2 says, “his delight is in the LORD’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.”

Oh, that we, as parents, would teach our sons these same principles. How different would our world be? However, in order to teach it, we must first live it our as an example to be followed.

Hang on and Don’t Let Go

In the trials of life, our faith shows its true colors

When you face trials, suffering, illnesses, problems in your marriage or with children, do you turn away from God? Do you blame Him? What about when you are guilty of sin? Does the shame of letting God down make you hide from Him like Adam and Eve did? What about now with the pandemic Coronavirus? Do you panic or lean on God and trust Him? It is when the trials of life come that our faith shows its true colors. In the trials is when we need to hang on to God and don’t let go.

Israel did not hang on to God

Israel’s greatest and most repetitive sin was turning away from God and towards idolatry. God expects us to serve Him alone. We should refuse anything that lures us away from God. In fact, we should cling to Him – hold fast – not ever let Him go. But what does it mean to “cling to God?”

Hezekiah knew to hang on to God he had to hold fast to God’s commandments

In 2 Kings 18:5-6, we find that Hezekiah “trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. For he held fast to the Lord: he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses.” Clinging to God, means clinging to His commandments, even in a world where they want to toss those commandments out the window and live however they want. Clinging to God means trusting Him – even when you’re not sure of what God is up to and when you can’t see how He is working in your life. Clinging to God means you never stop following Him even if you’re the only one walking in His footsteps.

Because Hezekiah was faithful to hang on to God, the Lord was with him

Because Hezekiah clung to God, verse 7 tells us that “The Lord was with him; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.” Clinging to God isn’t always easy. Sometimes it calls for us to stand up against the norm to do what God says – even if it seems crazy at the time, like building an ark no where near water when you don’t even have an idea of what rain is. Sometimes, clinging to God is going where He sends you even if you have no idea where “where” is but it means leaving everything and everyone behind to go there.

Do you hang on to God in difficult times?

So what do you do in the trails, difficult times? What do you do when you’re guilty of sin? What do you do when God calls you to stand up for Him, even when it means standing up against the world? Do you run into His embrace and cling to Him, willing to follow Him no matter the cost? If not, then consider if you are like Israel and creating idols by putting something before God.

God, may we cling to you every moment of every day. May we boldly stand up for you, proclaim your holy name and follow your commands, even in a world that would quickly and easily toss You aside.

New in the Teespring Store: The Prayer of Blessing

We’ve added a new canvas print to the Teespring Store.

God instructed the Israelite priests to pray the prayer of blessing every day over the people. The prayer is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Hang the canvass in your home or carry the mug, tote bag, or water bottle and let the prayer of blessing impact all those who you meet throughout the day.

We’ve also put this design on a poster, coffee mug, a stainless steel water bottle, phone cases, and a few other products.

Walk. Keep.

We have to live obedient lives to Him and to His commandments…and dowhat His Word says.

My dad once used a sermon illustration about a woman who decided that everything she came to something in the Bible that she didn’t like, she’d just cut that section out.

Aren’t these the same thing? When we look at the original Hebrew words, we can see the differences between the two: The word “Statute” is the Hebrew word Choq (Strong’s: H2706) It is a condition or civil enactment from God, an ordinance, a limit, or something prescribed. The word “requirement” could be used to define choq. So, a statute is a decree, requirement or boundary that God set in place for our good.

The word “commandment” is the Hebrew word “Mitsvah” (Strongs: H4687, from H6680) which means “a commandment of men or God, a commandment out of a code of wisdom. If we go back to the root word, “Tsavah” (H6680) we find a more helpful definition. Tsavah mean “to lay a charge upon”, “to command”, “to charge”, to give orders”, or “to appoint.” Using this, we can then see that a commandment is an order to do something, or a charge given to us to watch over and keep, and to follow.

Satan probably knows the entire Bible from memory including the Table of Contents and dictionary and the concordance in the back.
