Be Holy

Being holy isn’t based on feelings

I don’t know about you, but on Monday mornings, I don’t often feel all that holy. Thankfully, being holy isn’t based on how I feel at the moment, but on what Christ did for me on the cross. Nor do we have to go through the the ritual cleansings that the Israelites did. Since God had chosen the nation of Israel to be His special people through which He would fulfill His plan to restore fellowship between Himself and man, God commanded them to be holy because He is holy. God put into place the sacrifices and other rituals that would maintain their cleanness before Him. Because they were sinful humans, it was inevitable that they would become unclean – daily. Probably several times a day. So they had to keep doing the ritual cleansings that would allow God to remain in their presence.

Today, those ritual cleansings are no long needed or required because of Christ’s death on the cross. Once we surrender our hearts to Him and as Him to save us from our sins, we are made new. His blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness. He has done the work for us. Once and for all.

To fully understand this verse, we need to understand what it means to be consecrated and what it means to be holy. As a Christian, this verse applies just as much to us as it did to the nation of Israel. God says to each of us, “I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy.” So if God commands us to consecrate ourselves and to be holy, then we need to know exactly what God is commanding of us.

Consecrate Yourself

When we consecrate ourselves to God, we wholly dedicate ourselves to Him. It is the act of setting yourself aside and dedicating yourself to God. Consecrating involves separating ourselves from anything unclean or sinful so that our relationship to a holy God is not contaminated. It carries the ideas of being sanctified, holy, and pure.

2 Corinthians 6:17 tells us, “Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” Paul also wrote in Romans 12:1-2, “I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

As children of God who have been saved by faith in Christ, we consecrate ourselves when we surrender our lives and will to Him as a living sacrifice and live our lives for the glory of God. Peter wrote: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10)

Be holy.

To understand what it means to be holy, let’s first look at what it means that God is holy. God is absolute perfection. There is no other God. He has no trace of in (James 1:13, Hebrews 6:18). No one can compare to Him (Psalm 40:5). It defines His character. His love is a holy love. Him mercy is a holy mercy. And his anger is a holy anger.

When we look at what it means for us to be holy, we know we are not perfect and without sin. So how, then, are we holy? We are to be distinctly different from the world. We are set apart from the world for the purposes of God. As children of God, we are to live according to God’s standards so that the world will know we belong to Him. God know’s we are not capable of being perfect. Instead He calls us to be distinctly different from the world. Peter tells us how to do this in 1 Peter 1:13-16:

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

We Cannot make ourselves Holy

There is absolutely no way that we can make ourselves holy. We only become holy through a right relationship with God by believing in Christ as our Savior. Until we become a child of God, we remain unholy without any hope of becoming holy on our own. However, when we place our faith and trust in Christ and seek His forgiveness for our sins and ask Him to be our Savior then the blood he shed on the cross cleanses us from all sin. In that moment we become a holy child of God, set a part from the world.

So – are you living a consecrated and holy life?

Answer to yesterday’s Trivia Question

Here’s your answer:

Feb 10 TA

Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments, as well as on his sons and their garments. In this way he consecrated Aaron and his garments, as well as his sons and their garments. — Leviticus 8:30

Don’t forget to learn this week’s memory verse:

memory verse logo

James 4:7-8

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

Isaiah 55:6-7

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  Our verse last week focused on praying. For the next few weeks, we will be focusing on repentance.

There’s no doubt that marriage is hard work. Yet it can also be one of the most fulfilling relationships you can experience, outside of your relationship with God. However, many marriages leave God outside of the relationship. Godly marriages do not happen without cultivating it, investing in it, and putting God first in your individual lives and in your marriage.
This book includes 365 daily activities and takes you on a journey through Biblical principles about Godly marriage that you can then apply to your marriage, as well as helping you talk through concepts that can help you develop a solid relationship. Inside you will find simple, quick activities that include:
• Scripture to memorize and meditate on
• Conversation Starters
• Concepts from the Bible on Godly marriages
• Romance Builders
• Relationship Builders
• Personal reflections
• Date ideas
• Group date ideas for you and other Christian couples

What is pallet art?
It is a top trend in wall decor, created of dried-out pine with authentic rustic finish and the look of age and distress. It is the same wood that is used to create shipping pallets, and contains knots and knot holes, rough spots, irregular edging, and a rough, raw natural look- from the heart of America. The roughness and texture behind the artwork gives each piece a unique look of its own.

Pallet art is highly desirable and fits well with Country, primitive decor, contemporary suburban designs, and the open, back-to-nature style that is so appealing. Sawtooth hangers are affixed to the back for easy hanging on the wall.

Ecclesiastes 5:1-2. Be ready to hear

by Julia Bruce

Ecclesiastes 5 1-2

What is your purpose for going to church? If someone raises their hands or stands up in heartfelt worship do you follow suit because they did it? If your purpose is anything less than worship, then it’s nothing more than church attendance that is unreal, empty and fruitless – or for Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes, it is “vanity.” In Ecclesiastes 5:1-2, Solomon writes about religious behavior and warns us against trying to impress God. God wants genuine worshipers who are ready to hear from Him. Not fakers who are more worried about what man things of them than what God does.

In these two verses we can see the kind of religious behavior that God accepts and expects when we come to church to worship. First, we find that worship begins before we ever get to church. Verse 1 starts out “Guard your steps when you go to the house of the Lord.” We should be preparing ourselves for worship deliberately, thoughtfully and prayerfully so that we are poised and ready to draw near and be obedient to what the Holy Spirit is communicating to us.

If all we are interested in when we get to church is comparing dresses or shoes or the newest gossip, the headlines in the news, or the latest political fiasco, are we honestly ready to worship? Are we ready to hear God speak to us? (Click to tweet) In Exodus 19, God calls the people of Israel to prepare and get ready to come into His presence. In verses 10-11, it says, “Then the LORD said to Moses, “God to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the LORD will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.” God wanted His chosen people to get ready to come near to Him and to prepare their hearts for an encounter with Him. Although it would be Moses that would go on the mountain and speak with God, the people were to only come near, but they still stood in the presence of God and witnessed the thundering and lightning, the thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of the trumpet that was so loud they all trembled. In Verse 17, it says, “And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.”

How different would we approach going to church if we knew that God would physically be there to meet with us? (click to tweet) Most of us would have quite a bit of confessing to do before meeting with God. The emotions we would feel would be everything from the greatest excitement to the greatest fear. We probably wouldn’t sleep at all. There would be a million questions, like “Why would God want to me with me? What did I do that He is physically coming here?” But each one of us would do everything we could to prepare ourselves for meeting the Almighty God.

While God may not physically show up at out church next Sunday, He is there. He hears the conversations, knows our innermost thoughts and motivations and I wonder if He is disappointed week after week as He examines our hearts only to see that we were more interested in the mistakes the soloist made, whether we sang the old hymns or contemporary music, if the pastor preached from a Bible or his ipad, or if the honored pulpit was removed in favor of a smaller stand. (click to tweet) God stands in His own house to hear His children squabble over the color of the carpet, to hear them complain and mock the pastor who He called to shepherd His children, and to hear them talk about the latest sports game more excitedly than they are to hear from God. Then we as Christians wonder why we never hear from God. Could it be that we need to take time before coming to church to guard our steps and prepare our hearts so that we can truly worship our Heavenly Father? If we do not come with hearts that are prepared that we are no better off than the “fool” that through their own ignorance offers sacrifices wrongly. If we are going to truly offer sacrifices of praise and worship and come into the presence of God, we must prepare and consecrate ourselves before coming into His presence. (click to tweet)

The second behavior of appropriate worship involves our communication with God – our payers. In verse two we find, “Do not be hasty to speak, and do not be impulsive to make a speech before God.” Communication involves to people who are taking turns at talking and listening. Without listening there is no communication – just a lot of noise. If when we approach God in prayer we are doing all the talking and not listening for His voice we will miss what He has to say to us. Instead, we need to take time to invite God to speak as we quietly listen. (click to tweet)  If He calls us to serve Him, we do not need to impulsively make excuses for what we can’t, but be ready with an obedient, “Yes, Lord.” If He calls out sin in our life, we do not need to impulsive offer a defense. Instead, we need to kneel before Him with a repentant heart and seek His forgiveness. If He prompts us to forgive someone who has wronged us, we don’t need to impulsively give Him the “But God….” speech. Instead we need to remember that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and He stands ready to forgive us every time we sin against Him so we ought to always be ready forgive others. If we are constantly talking when we bring our petitions to Him, we will miss out on hearing God’s answer and direction. So be slow to speak. Listen more than you talk because the Creator of the universe has something He wants to say to You and when you have taken the time to prepare your hearts and come to Him with a heart ready for worship, you’ll be in a position to hear what He has to say. (Click to tweet)

1 Chronicles 28:9 – Are you searching for God?

May 30 1 Chronicles 28 9.png

As the book of 1 Chronicles closes out, David is at the end of his reign and he will pass the throne to his son, Solomon. David calls an assembly of the people together and before them all David has some last words of wisdom to give to Solomon. First, he encourages Solomon to have a single-minded devotion to God because nothing less matters since God knows our every intention and our every thought. God knows what motivates us. He knows when what we do is for appearances or when it is heart-felt service to Him.

David also wanted to remind Solomon that God can always be found – if we search for Him. Deuteronomy 4:29 says, that we will find God if we search for him with all our heart and all our soul. Proverbs 8:17 says that those who diligently seek God will find Him. David knew from his own experience what it meant to search for God. In Psalm 63:1 he says, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

If you are searching for God, then what is your motivation? Do you really want to find Him and have a relationship with Him or is God more of a “genie in a bottle” that you can use to further your own plans and agenda? Seeking God is about developing an intimate relationship with Him, not just to get what you want when you want it. Does your soul thirst for God – to point of feeling faint? Does your relationship to God feel parched as in a dry, weary land where there is no water? When talking to the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus said that He was the living water. He told her, “But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever! In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up within him for eternal life.” (John 4:14) If your soul is feeling parched, come to the well where Jesus offers living water and take a drink by asking Him to forgive you of your sins and invite Him into your heart and life as your Lord and Savior.

In 1 Chronicles 29 David has already given Solomon his plans for building a temple to house the Ark. David tells the assembly of people about the gold and silver that he is giving from his own personal treasury to go to the construction of the temple. He then invites the people to give of their own choice as well. He says to the crowd in verse 5, “Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?” To consecrate simple means to “set apart.” If you are searching for God, this same question can apply to you – Are you willing to consecrate yourself to God? Are you willing to set yourself apart from the rest of the world and live obediently for God? If your answer is yes, tell Him. Call on His name and when you search for Him with all your heart and your motivation to find Him is to have a personal relationship with Him, then you will find Him.

Lastly, if you are searching for God, then where are you searching? God can reveal Himself to us in many different ways, such as the words of a song, something the pastor says in his message, or the encouraging word from a friend. However, God is most often found through reading the Bible and spending time in prayer, talking with Him. If you are not spending time in personal Bible study and prayer, then searching for God needs to begin here. As you open your Bible, take a moment and ask God to speak to you through what you read and to reveal Himself to you. When a certain verse seems to stand out or leap off the page to you – highlight that verse and take some time to meditate on it. Ask God what He might be trying to say to you through it. If you apply that verse to you life right now, how might that look?

If you are searching God, check your motivations and intentions, search with all your heart, develop a single-minded devotion to God, consecrate yourself to Him, and commit to daily fellowship with Him through Bible study and prayer. He wants to be found.
