Why are there so many names for God? Why is it important that we know what they are and what they mean? Our finite, human brains cannot fully comprehend the majesty and glory of who God is. Yet through the various names of God, He chooses to reveal Himself to us so we can come to understand the many personal characteristics of God. His names reveal His power, authority, and holiness. The better we understand and know the names of God, the more personal He becomes to us and as we pray, we can call on His name that corresponds with our need. And because the Bible instructs us to honor, fear, respect God and to not take His name in vain, we need to know exactly what His names are and what they mean.
While Elohim created the heavens and the earth, no one created God. He just always has been and always will be. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the eternal, supreme master over everything and everyone and He chooses to reveal Himself to us so that we might know Him. This name of God which (by Jewish tradition) is too holy to voice, is actually spelled “YHWH” without vowels. While YHWH is first used in Genesis 2, God did not reveal Himself as YHWH until Exodus 3. The modern spelling as “Yahweh” includes vowels to assist in pronunciation. Many pronounce YHWH as “Yahweh” or “Jehovah.” We no longer know for certain the exact pronunciation. During the third century A.D., the Jewish people stopped saying this name in fear of breaking the commandment “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain” (Exd 20:7). As a result of this, Adonai is occasionally a substitute for YHWH.
Father, show us who You are. Reveal to us why You are worthy of being called the One True, Living God. Teach us to unabashedly love you, respect Your name, and serve only You. Make your character known to us so we can live and walk in your image. Amen.
