Distress Protection

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Protecting and preserving ourselves is survival in times of crisis and uncertainty. Practicing self-care is an act of compassion toward ourselves, and it is Biblical. As people in ministry, we are constantly pouring into other people. If we do not take time to recharge and care for ourselves, we will eventually have nothing left to pour and find ourselves at the point of distress.

You are not alone if you find it difficult to take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health during times of distress. Here are a few simple strategies that may be helpful during difficult and unsettling times:

Managing distress through self-care

  • Drink water and stay hydrated. Eat healthy food and avoid junk food. In times of distress, we tend to reach for “comfort foods,” but those often are not nutritious and healthy. They pack on the pounds and create additional health problems that only add to our distress.
  • Get enough sleep. In times of distress, if we are tired and exhausted, the distress seems overwhelming. But with enough rest, we are better able to appropriately handle distress.
  • Try and slow down to notice your pattern and pace of breathing. Is your breath slow and steady? Fast and shallow? Take deep, cleansing breaths for 1 minute.
  • When we are distressed, it affects our physical bodies. Scan your body and notice where you may be holding tension and tightness. What feels tense? Are there areas of chronic pain or discomfort? Relax the muscles in those areas.
  • Consider placing your open palm over your heart while you notice the rise and fall of your chest.
  • Use the sights, scents, and sounds that bring you comfort to change your surroundings such as looking out the window, lighting a candle, or playing your favorite worship playlist.
  • Set boundaries to guard against information overload and excessive screen time. In times of crisis, it’s important to preserve our taxed nervous systems by limiting exposure to news and social media.

Managing distress by reconnecting with God

Remember that Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches. We can do nothing without Him. So, we need to be sure we are connected to the Vine. We cannot effectively carry out the ministry to which God has called us to if we are not connected to the Vine.

  • Be gentle with yourself by letting go of negative self-talk. Remember who God says you are – redeemed, chosen, loved, treasured, uniquely created, child of God.
  • Listen to godly podcasts or sermons to keep you connected to God, who is in control of all things.
  • Remember the purpose for which God called you into ministry.
  • Remember God is your fortress and that he has guided you through other challenging times. Claim His promises and know that He will never leave your or forsake you and that He is working all things out for your good.
  • Spend time reading your Bible, praying, and singing praise songs.
  • Memorize scripture
  • Reach out to another pastor or ministry partner, friend, or caring person by phone, social media, text, or email and ask for prayer, encouragement, and support.

Surrendering your Distress

Remember that we all experience distress in our lives. But distress does not control our situation or our ministry. We are instructed to cast all our cares on Jesus. He cares for us and about the things that makes us distressed.  (1 Peter 5:7)

Take the list of stressors that you came up with in our previous post and lay them at the feet of Jesus. Surrender them to Him. Then leave them there. Don’t pick them back up again. Yes, the situations that cause you distress will still be there, but once you have surrendered them to Christ, you can know that you are no longer handling them on your own. In fact, sometimes our distress comes from us trying to handle things on our own! Psalm 118:5-6 says, “I called to the Lord in distress; the Lord answered me and put me in a spacious place. The Lord is for me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Yes! Dear friend in the ministry – the Lord is for you! Call out to Him and allow Him to put you in a spacious place.

Pre-order now to receive a 50% discount! (Releasing December 2021)

You will get the complete downloadable self-care video-based course plus 10 group coaching sessions.

We know that ministry is hard! When you serve in ministry as staff or volunteer, you are on a spiritual battlefield 24/7. As you serve God, you fight for the Kingdom of God and our adversary is constantly attacking. He wants you to either lose your effectiveness in your ministry role or get you to quit. We must be sure we are reconnecting to the Vine (Jesus) so that we can refill, renew, and recharge. Then we can keep on pouring into others.

If you are feeling like you are losing the fight or struggling to stay in the fight, Jesus says to you, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31) Self-care is both Biblical and necessary, if you are going to stay in the fight and be effective in the Kingdom of God. Stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue are real weapons that the adversary uses against us.

Even if you do not serve in ministry, if you are a Christian, you too are in a spiritual battle. Every Christian fights the same adversary and our Biblical self-care principles are for every Christian.

What you get in this self-care course:

In Part 1 of this video-based course, you will learn about the spiritual dangers in ministry, discover if God is testing you or is Satan attacking you, understand that ministry is battlefield and how to be steadfast, immovable on the battlefield, learn how the devil uses his wiles and schemes against us, and remember how to use your Spiritual Armor. We will also breakdown stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue.

Part 2 is all about Preventing and Recovering from Burnout and Compassion Fatigue as we go through six areas that need self-care. In this part of the course we will provide you with practical ways that you can immediately begin practicing self-care. As you continue to serve God in whatever way He has called you, self-care is vital if you are not going to grow weary in doing good so you can reap at the proper time (Galatians 6:9).

Additionally, this packaged deal will provide 10 group coaching session where we will discuss the weekly assigned videos and do check-ins on where you are in each of the six areas of self-care that include: Spiritual, Sensory, Emotional, Social, Physical, and Intellectual.

Releasing in December 2021, this packaged deal will include the complete video-based course plus 10 group coaching sessions with the author, Julia Bruce. In the 10-week program you will complete weekly videos and assignments and then meet virtually for a group coaching session to help you apply self-care where you need it.

But wait! That’s not all! Check out this Bonus to the self-care course and coaching program.

BONUS: While this course and group coaching is not releasing until December 2021, if you’re purchasing this material, we know you need help now. So, if you purchase before the release date, we’ll place you in our new private Facebook membership page for free through the end of 2021. In January, this group will require a monthly subscription of $19.99. But it will be yours free through the end of year when you purchase the pre-release of the course and group coaching sessions.

The Path to Sin

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. The Tension of Distress

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC
CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries
“I called to the Lord in distress; the Lord answered me and put me in a spacious place.
The Lord is for me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
— Psalm 118:5-6 (HCSB)

You are probably most familiar with bad stress. When you are experiencing eustress (good stress), you probably don’t recognize it as stress since it can be associated with good things in life, such as planning a wedding or receiving a promotion. Bad stress, however, is the opposite. This type of stress is known as “distress.”

Synonyms for “distress” include: affliction, agony, excruciation, hurt, misery, pain, torment, travail, tribulation, and woe. When we experience distress we can become agitated, alarmed, bothered, concerned, disturbed, frazzled, perturbed, and upset. We experience discomfort, dismay, and worry. We are easily distracted.

When distress occurs

For many of us, uncertainty and a lack of control trigger feelings of unsafety. Yet in the face of a pandemic and uncertainty in our world, these difficult emotions are an all too familiar baseline. More so, when we are surrounded by escalating risks and panic — ranging from fear for the health of ourselves and loved ones, financial uncertainty, and social unrest — it becomes increasingly difficult to be fully aware of the toll of these threats to the safety of our health, financial well-being, and community on our bodies and minds.

As people in ministry, we not only deal with our own stressors, but often we are called on to help others deal with their stressors. We can actually take on their stress as our own and that multiplies the stressors we carry around that weigh us down. Sooner or later, the weight becomes more than we can bear.

We reach a point of distress when stress becomes too much for us to bear. When the tension builds to the point of distress, there is no longer any fun in the challenge. We see no forthcoming relief. There is no end in sight. If eustress acts as a motivator, than distress becomes a de-motivator. When we are in distress, our performance decreases, we tend to make poor decisions, we experience anxiety and it can lead to mental health problems as well as physical problems. While eustress can be exciting, distress feels unpleasant.

What are the stressors in your life that cause distress?

Take a moment and list some examples of stressors in your life that would be distress.

Examples of distress can include the following:

  • Death
  • Divorce
  • Separation from spouse
  • Conflict in relationships
  • Hospitalization
  • Illness/injury
  • Pandemics
  • Abuse/neglect
  • Legal problems
  • Changes
  • Unemployment
  • Sleep problems
  • Problems with children
  • Financial problems

Looking over your lists of eustress (created in a previous blog post) and distress, which do you have more of in your life right now?

Whether your stress is bad stress or good stress – it’s still…

How do I know God hears me?

Do you ever feel like your prayers are not being heard by God? Do you cry out in total desperation and feel like He’s no where near? Especially over the past year as COVID19 has raged as a worldwide pandemic? When it feel like the ceiling above is is a sound barrier our prayers can’t get through, we want to know if God hears us when we pray. When was the last time you’ve asked, “How do I know God hears me?”

God hears even when it doesn’t feel like He hears

The good thing is that God hearing us is not based on how we feel in this moment. We can be assured that God hears every praise, every tear, every cry of desperation, every sigh, and every worry. He even hears our thoughts. In fact, in Psalm 139:4, the psalmist wrote, “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.” He tells us that there is no where we can go that God is not able to both know where we are and hear us. Not a single part of our lives escapes His notice.

Perhaps you are waiting on  a COVID test result today – or, you just received a positive diagnosis. It’s not the news you wanted, but God already knew it. He’s not surprised or thrown off guard and He is already working to bring about His perfect plan for you. Maybe your diagnosis is cancer. Perhaps a loved one was recently injured. Maybe you’ve been praying for a rebellious child. Maybe your distress that makes you call out to God is financial or job loss. But what we learn in 2 Samuel 22:7, is that when we cry out to God, he does hear us.

When we seek Him, God hears us

In Psalm 34, David wrote, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears…This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles…The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry…the righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

In every situation, David knew to cry out to God because God hears

David knew both sorrow and fear. Yet in every circumstance he faced, he knew to call out to God and he knew that God heard him. He knew that God was always near. We, today, have that same assurance. You can be sure that as God’s child, He will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). God is always near and He hears your cry. He will never abandon you. You are never alone. Because you are His child you are filled with the Holy Spirit and He will carry you through every trial.

Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still.” Just as God was with David when he fought Goliath, God will be with you through your battles. Just as God was with Daniel in the lion’s den, God will be with you as you face your adversaries. Just as God was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, God will stand with you through the fiery trial you face. And just as God’s eye in on the sparrow, you can know that He is watching over you…and He’s got it all under His control.

Prayers for Revival: Know my anxieties

by Julia Bruce
CEO & Keynote speaker

God knows our anxieties

What creates anxieties in your life? What keeps you up at night or makes you afraid? Your first answer might be 2020. It seems that between COVID, racial issues, police brutality (by a few!), the crime and murder rate, and even the elections can all be valid reasons for plenty of anxieties in our lives. But what do we do with those anxieties?

The Bible has a lot to say about anxiety, but the word itself may not be found all that often. In the English Standard Version, it is used 8 times. In the New International Version, it is found 7 times. The King James Version does not use the word at all. Synonyms like troubleheavinessdistress, and cares are used in its place. In Psalm 139:23-24, the HCSB uses the word “concerns.”

Under your anxieties, do you find Solid Rock or sinking sand

The problems in our world today, remind me of the old hymn lyrics written by Edward Mote around 1834:

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When we stand on the things that make us anxious, we’re standing on sinking sand. But when we are standing on the solid Rock that is Jesus, then regardless of what goes on around us, we have a steadfast hope that will keep us from falling into the sinking sand of sin and doubt.

In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6, Jesus says we should not experience anxieties over the cares of this life. Since our Heavenly Father knows our every need and He cares about each one of them, we have no need to worry about even the basic necessities of life, like food and clothing. How do we know He does cares about even the little things in our lives? If God takes care of simple things like grass, flowers, and birds, won’t He also care for people who He created in His image? Rather than worry over things we cannot control, we should “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things [the necessities of life] will be added to you” (verse 33). Putting God first is a cure for anxiety. Where are your feet planted? On the solid Rock or sinking sand?

When sin is the cause of anxiety

Many times, the anxiety we feel is a result of sin in our life and the only way to deal with the concern is deal with the sin. Psalm 32:1-5 says that the person whose sin is forgiven is blessed, and the heavy weight of guilt is taken away when sins are confessed.

Maybe your anxiety comes from a a broken relationship. 1 Corinthians 13:11 tells us to make peace with others.

Fear of the unknown in 2020 is a true cause for concern and anxiety. But in Psalm 68:20, we learn we can turn it over to the One who knows everything and is in control of it all.

Perhaps there is an overwhelming issue in your life that leaves you feeing like your out in a small boat on storm tossed waves in the dark of night. When the disciples became distressed in a storm, Jesus first rebuked their lack of faith, then rebuked the wind and the waves (Matthew 8:23-27). As long as we are with Jesus, there is nothing to fear. Will Jesus say to you “O ye of little faith”?

Do not be anxious about anything

We can count God to provide for our needs, protect us from evil, guide us, and keep our souls secure for eternity. We may not be able to prevent anxious thoughts from entering our minds, but we can practice the right response. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Today’s Revival Prayer

Father, we come before you now, casting our every care on you, knowing that you care about even the smallest details of our lives. Because you work all things out for our good, we do not have to be anxious about anything. So we bring our concerns and anxieties to you now, asking you – the God that is bigger than any problem – to work on our behalf so that you are glorified in this problem that gives us concern. We thank you and praise your for your presence that gives us strength, your love that never ends, your provision that sees to our needs, your protection from evil, and for keeping our souls safe in your for all eternity. Helps us to seek you first in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
