A Tangible Experience of God’s Presence

Experiencing God’s presence in worship

We’ve all had experiences where we’ve left church on Sunday or a worship retreat or Bible study of some kind and felt God’s presence as we worshiped Him. It’s a wonderful experience and we don’t want that feeling to end. But yet, how long does it take until we fall into sin or go back to living like before? Usually not too long. If the presence of God was visibly and tangibly around you all day, every day, do you think you’d fall into the same trap of sin? Before you’re too quick to answer, let’s look at the cloud of the Lord and Israel.

The Pillars of Cloud and Fire

The Bible tells us that throughout all of Israel’s journeys, God’s presence was with them – in a tangible way. They could see His glory in the cloud that filled the tabernacle by day and fire was on it by night. From the moment they left Egypt all the way through the books of the prophets who foretold of another exodus out of Babylonian captivity, the Cloud of the Lord held both theological meaning and function.

The Cloud of the Lord represented God’s presence in the following ways:

  • guidance and leading Israel out of Egypt and through the wilderness into the promised land (Exodus 13:21; Numbers 14:14, Nehmiah 9:12; Paslm 78:14)
  • a sign that the nations was to break camp and continue their journey or to stop and set up camp (Exodus 40:36-37; Number 9:17-23)
  • protection from Pharaoh and his army (Exodus 14:19-20)
  • the personal presence of God/the angel of the Lord was among them (Exodus 13:22; Exodus 14:19, Exodus 14:24, Exodus 40:38, Numbers 9:15-16)
  • it summoned them to battle (Numbers 10:34-35)
  • it summoned them to worship (Exodus 33:10)
  • the cloud both concealed God glory and was a manifestation of it (Exodus 16:10, Exodus 19:9, Exodus 19:16; Exodus 20:21, Exodus 24:15-18, Exodus 34:5, Deuteronomy 4:11, Deuteronomy 5:22)
  • provided revelation (Exodus 33:9, Psalm 99:7)
  • a dwelling place of God (Numbers 9:18, Numbers 9:22, Numbers 10:11)
  • God dwelt over the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:2
  • a visible manifestation of God for installing the 70 elders and Joshua into service (Num 11:25, Deuteronomy 31:15)
  • inaugurated the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34-35)
  • provided shade from the sun and protection from storm (Number 10:34; Psalm 105:39, Isa 4:5)
  • at night it became a pillar of fire to give them light (Exodus 14:20

Choosing Idols Over God’s Presence

Wherever they went, the cloud of the Lord led them. And still the nation ended up turning to idols and breaking their covenant with God. As they left Egypt and met God at the mountain, they stood as a nation and said they would do what God wanted them to do – they would obey his commands. They said that God would be their God and they would be His people. But when Moses goes to the top of the mountain for 40 days they get Aaron to make a ‘god’ for them to worship. Throughout the Old Testament they struggled with idol worship.

Fill Us with Your Glory

As believers, God dwells within us. We are His temple. If each of us walked around with the cloud of the Lord and fire by night as a meter for how much our lives reflected God’s glory, would there be a big cloud or a tiny one? Would the fire by night be burning bright or just a little flicker.

Father, fill us with your glory and may it shine bright in a lost world that desperately needs you.

Exodus 37-38

Matthew 23:23-39

Don’t Be A Whitewashed Tomb

A Whitewashed Tomb

What did Jesus mean when he said the scribes and Pharisees were like a whitewashed tomb? Take a moment and think about what you find inside a tomb – not a vacant one – but an inhabited one. A tomb that’s had a long-time resident. Maybe an image from a horror movie you’ve seen came to mind. With that picture in mind, go back read Matthew 23:27-28 again…

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every impurity. In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Pretty on the outside; Nasty on the inside

In Bible days, people used caves to bury their dead. If Jesus were here today He might would say that on the outside the scribes and Pharisees were like a well-tended grave with beautiful flowers placed weekly on the gravesite, but on the inside they were like the rotting, stinking, decaying body found inside the casket. They were hypocrites. They displayed one thing while in reality was something altogether different on the inside. And with God, its what is on the inside that matters!

A picture of righteousness on the outside; pride and sin on the inside

Al Capp, an American cartoonist and humorist best known for the satirical comic strip Li’l Abner, once said: “Abstract art is a product of the untalented sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.” The scribes and Pharisees could have been described the same way. They were unprincipled, pious religious leaders forcing rigid legalistic rules on the bewildered people that were never intended by God. They went around in their fancy clothing, praying loudly and openly for all to see how “righteous” they were and yet they didn’t even keep the rigid laws they imposed on everyone else.

Jesus described the scribes and Pharisees as beautiful on the outside, but on the inside they were nothing more than rotting, decaying bones. They painted a good picture of “righteousness” for everyone to see, but their hearts were full of pride and sin. Most of us don’t like people like that, but sometimes we are just as guilty.

God is concerned about what’s on the inside

If we go to church on Sunday and act holy and spiritual, but the rest of week act like the Devil, then we are as much of a hypocrite as the scribes and Pharisees. God isn’t concerned with what other people see on the outside, He interested on what He sees on the inside. He knows what’s really inside and how sincere we are about our worship of Him and our relationship with Him.

In 1 Samuel 16:7, God tells Samuel, “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” We can fool other people, but we can’t fool God. We can dress up in our Sunday finest and play the part, but when we stand before God on judgment day, He will know if our insides are rotting decaying bones or full of the Holy Spirit.

Are you like a whitewashed tomb?

What is the condition of your heart today? Are you like a whitewashed tomb, keeping up appearances or does God see your heart as righteous, cleansed by the blood of Jesus?

Exodus 34-36

Matthew 23:1-22

What is God like?

A picture of God

Have you ever wondered what God is like? If you had to draw a picture of him, what would it look like?

A little boy was working hard on drawing a picture and his daddy asked him what he was doing. The son replied, “Drawing a picture of God.” His daddy said, “You can’t do that, honey. Nobody knows what God looks like.” But the little boy was undeterred and continued to draw. Without stopping his work, he looked at his picture with satisfaction and said very matter-of-factly, “They will in a few minutes.”

God shows us what He is like in His Word

We may not know what God’s physical features are, but from the beginning of the Bible, He reveals His attributes to us so that we know what He is like. In Exodus 34:6-7, rather than painting a picture, God gives us a visual description of Himself as Moses writes a list about God’s invisible qualities. From this, we learn that God is merciful and gracious. He abounds in goodness and truth. He is long-suffering and willing to forgive. We also learn that God will not spare the wicked from punishment.

Moses had a desire to know what God is like

In Exodus 33:12-13, Moses asked God to teach him more about God’s ways. Moses said, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight.”

In response to Moses’ request for God to show him more about who He was, God passes by Moses and proclaims the attributes about Himself, revealing to Moses more about His character. God wanted Moses (and us) to know that He is not an impersonal God. Instead, He is a God that loves us, unconditionally, while also being a just God who will punish sin. The result of God’s revelation to Moses was that Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped God because Moses knew all he needed to accomplish the task God had called him to do was the presence of God.

Lord, show me more of your ways

When was the last time we cried out to God and said, “Lord show me more of your ways?” Just as God answered Moses, God will answer us today. It might be through scripture that you read or in a sermon from your pastor or a song on the radio. When our desire to know more about God is a longing that is from the heart, God will reveal Himself. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” How bad do you really want to know more about God? How much do you long for the presence of God to lead you to what He’s called you to do?
