Genesis 50:20

Jan 21 Genesis 50 20 NKJVA surgeon, an engineer, and a politician were debating which of their professions was the oldest. The surgeon said, “Eve was made from Adam’s rib, and that, of course, was a surgical procedure. Obviously, surgery is the oldest profession.” The engineer countered with, “Yes, but before that, order was created out of chaos, and that most certainly was an engineering job.” The politician smiled and said triumphantly, “Aha! And just who do you think created the chaos?”

Joseph’s brothers sure did create chaos for Joseph! They threw him in a pit – a dried up water hole used for watering sheep. Then they sold him as a slave. Placed on an auction block, the favored son of Joseph was inspected like a animal, bartered over, and sold to the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. However, the Bible tells us, “But the Lord was with Joseph” and everything Joseph did God caused him to prosper so that Potiphar made Joseph over his entire household. But chaos wasn’t finished in Joseph’s life. Potiphar’s wife takes a “liking” to Joseph and when Joseph refuses her invitation and flees he leaves behind his cloak when she then uses it to falsely cry “Rape” and the cloak becomes her “proof” to her claim. Joseph is then thrown into prison. Again the Bible tells us that God was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. (Genesis 39: 21-22).

No matter what chaos the people in Joseph’s life created, God was behind every evil intent to bring about a plan to save many people from an extensive famine. God give Pharaoh two dreams that trouble him and no one in the land of Egypt is able to interpret the dream. However, from the prison days, Joseph had interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh’s cup bearer and baker. The Butler remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about the man that had interpreted his dream. Pharaoh summons Joseph and provides the meaning of Pharaoh’s dream while also giving him a game plan for preparing for the famine that God was warning Pharaoh would come. As a result, Pharaoh places Joseph  2nd in command of all of Egypt with only Pharaoh in more power than Joseph.

When the famine is severe, Jacob (Joseph’s father) sends his sons off to Egypt to buy grain so they don’t starve to death. Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. He accuses the of being spies and begins testing them. He gives them grain and sends them home but tells them they can’t have more grain if they do not return with the youngest brother (Benjamin – Joseph’s only full-blooded brother). Eventually, when the brother’s return for more grain, Joseph reveals who he is and the brothers become afraid that Joseph will seek revenge. However, Joseph reveals his wisdom and shows that he recognizes how God has been at work in his life all along.

If it were not for the pit, sold as a slave, accused of rape, and thrown in prison, Joseph would not have been placed in a position to save not only his own family of thousands of people from the famine. God used each of these adversities that brought chaos to Joseph so that Joseph would be in the position God needed him. If anyone had the right to sit in corner and have a pity-party – it would be Joseph. Instead, Joseph recognized God at work in his life. He recognized that God made him prosper even in the chaos. When chaos comes knocking at your door, do you run and hide from it or look to see where God is at work? Joseph told his brothers that what they had intended as evil against him, God meant for good. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Trust God in the chaos and look for where He is at work to make the chaos work together for good.

Matthew 15:28

Jan 20 Matthew 15 28A woman fell of a cliff and, at the last minute as she fell, happened to grab hold of a shrubby bush.  As she dangled in space, she was filled with terror and called out toward heaven, “Is there anyone up there?” A calm, powerful voice came out of the sky, “Yes, there is.” The woman pleaded, “Can you help me? Can you help me?” The calm voice replied, “Yes, I can. Simply let loose of the bush, and everything will turn out fine.” There was a tense pause, then the woman yelled, “Is there anyone else up there?”

How many times are we like this woman in our prayer life? We ask God to give us wisdom for a decision and we don’t like the answer He gives. Or we pray for a certain job promotion to work out and someone else gets it instead.  We pray for healing for ourselves or someone we care about and instead they journey on to heaven.

The woman Jesus is speaking about in Matthew 15:28 is a Canaanite woman (a Gentile) whose daughter was vexed with a devil. Throughout the Bible we see Jesus have compassion and he healed both Jew and Gentile. But here in this verse, Jesus sates that the focus of His earthly ministry was to the Israelites who had been abused by their spiritual leaders. The distraught mother doesn’t look to the disciples for a second opinion or ask them to heal her daughter. Instead she demonstrates her faith that Jesus is the only one that could heal her daughter and she came and worship Jesus. Her use of the words “Lord” and “Son of David” indicate that she recognized Jesus as the Jewish Messiah….something even the Jews did not recognize. She knew Jesus was the only hope for her child and she and cried to Him, “Lord, help me!” As a result her daughter was healed of the devil that very hour.

Whether God answers our prayers the way we asked Him to or not, are we more like the woman dangling from cliff asking for a second opinion or do we have the kind of faith that Jesus would say to us, “O woman great is thy faith!” How I long to be a woman of great faith.

Matthew 13:58

Jan 18 Genesis 13 58A little boy was afraid of the dark. One night his mother told him to go out to the porch and bring her the broom. The little boy turned to his mother and said, “Momma, I don’t want to go out there. It’s dark.” The mother smiled reassuringly at her son. “You don’t have to be afraid of the dark,” she explained. “Jesus is out there.” He’ll look after you and protect you.” The little boy looked at his mother real hard and asked, “Are you sure he’s out there?” “Yes, I’m sure. He is everywhere, and he is always ready to help you when you need him,” she said. The little boy thought about that for a minute, then went to the back door and cracked it a little. Peering out into the darkness, he called, “Jesus? If you’re out there would you please hand me that broom?”

Some things must be believed before they can be seen…it’s called faith. In Jesus’ own country (Nazareth) he taught family, relatives, and friends right in His hometown. He preached in their synagogue and they were all astonished, wondering where He had learned so much wisdom. After all they knew Him. He was the first born son of Mary. He came from a poor family. He had never studied in the synagogue. He learned the trade of Joseph – a carpenter. They knew his family. So they were offended. They did not believe that this boy they had watched grow up in their town could possible be the Messiah they had all been waiting for.

To me, Matthew 13:58 is one of the saddest verses in Scripture. Because of their unbelief, Jesus did not do the mighty miracles that he had done in other places. How many people missed out on what Jesus wanted  and could have done for them had they only had faith. I do not believe in a “name it and claim it” theology that teaches if God doesn’t answer a prayer its because you didn’t have enough faith. However, I do believe there are times that God’s answer to our prayers are tied to the extent of our faith. At the same time, God would not answer a prayer if he knew that it was somehow not in our best interest. So while we might think we want that prayer answered, God always knows what’s best and He will only do what is good for us because He is a good God. If you were to ask God why he didn’t answer a prayer, would His response be “O ye of little faith” or would it be something like, “Because I love you and want something even better for you that you can’t yet see.” Don’t be like the people in Jesus’ home town. Believe so you can see.
