An Omniscient God (Isaiah 66:18)

by Julia Bruce
CEO, Author, and Conference Speaker

An All-Knowing, Omniscient God

Have you ever been given a whole lot of information at once and in a very short amount of time? So much that your mind seems to whirl round and round as it attempts to process everything being fed to it? Our human minds simply cannot hold and contain every single memory. In other words – we forget. We have trouble remembering why we walked in a room much less remembering every detail of every moment of our lives. But what if you were responsible for knowing everything – every moment from the beginning of time to now – on into the future – right down to the end of time? We simply are not capable of knowing it all – but God is. He is all-knowing, or omniscient. But just what does that mean for both the believer and the non-believer at the final judgement?

We Forget – God does not

We often forget things. Sometimes we conveniently forget -like when we tell the kids to clean their rooms after school. Other times we neglectfully forget – like when you don’t write down an appointment in your calendar because you just know you’ll remember it. And other times, we get distractedly forget – like when you get engrossed in a really good Bible study, lose track of time and forget to pick up the kids from school. And sometimes we just humanly forget because it’s just impossible to remember it all – like when your wife gives you a list of 10 things she needs at the store and you remember three of them.

The Omniscient God can choose to not remember

But God, as an omniscient God, doesn’t forget anything in the sense that you or I would. God can choose to not remember – but He doesn’t forget. For the believer who has accepted Christ as their Savior, their sins are forgiven and wiped clean. Psalm 103:12 says, “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” And 1 John 1:9 tells us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” And yet the omniscient God, can choose to not remember, as we see in Jeremiah 31:34, where God says, “for I will forgive their iniquity [sin], and I will remember their sin no more.” The reason He can choose to not remember our sin, is because the blood of Jesus covers our sin and God sees us as “justified” or “just as if I’ve never sinned.”

What does Omniscient mean?

God knows everything – always. Omniscient. Its a big word that is hard to spell. It’s not a word you’ll find in the Bible. Not in the Greek, Hebrew, or even the King James. It’s a theological word given to a truth found in the Bible. Omniscient means that God knows all things, past, present and future, real and potential, and He knows them all at the same time. He not only knows what was, and what is, He also knows what will be. On top of that, He knows everything that could be but is not.  He does not have to learn anything and He has not forgotten anything. God does not have to reason things out, find out things, or learn them gradually. He even knows those things that we have yet to discover. We can’t hide from God, run from God, or do things behind his back without getting caught. He simply knows it all.

We can’t hide anything from an omniscient God

Isaiah 66:18 tells us God knows our works and our thoughts. David wrote in Psalm 139:1-4, “O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up, you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before I word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.” What this means is that there is nothing we can hide from God. Not any action or any thought or any motive – whether they be good or bad.

The omniscient God will be the judge in the final judgement

Isaiah also tells us that God will gather everyone from every nation to him and he will judge them in the final judgment that the book of Revelations tells us is to come. There won’t be any acceptable excuses because God know our thoughts, motives, every word we say, and every action we do. Paul also mentions it in Acts 17:31 where he writes, God “has set a day in which he purposes to judge the inhabited earth.” But what happens at this judgement and who is it for?

What happens at the Final Judgement?

At the Final Judgement, John 5:22 tells us that Jesus will be the judge. Both the living and the dead will stand before him. Here is what the Bible has to say about the Final Judgement:

  • Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God. 1 Corinthians 4:5
  • “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10
  • But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37
  • I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his manifestation and his Kingdom 2 Timothy 4:1
  • “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.” Revelation 20:11-15

The Great White Throne

This great white throne is the coming judgement for every person who reject Christ’s offer of salvation. It will be their last stop where their sentence will be handed down and they hear him say, “Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!.” (Matthew 25:41) They will not have a chance to repent at that point. The time for that is now – in this life. Once you breathe your last earthly breath, there will not be another chance.

What about Believers – or Christians?

Believers will also stand before Jesus, but rather than judgement, they will fully comprehend just how great and extravagant His grace is. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 4:5 that our Omniscient Christ will disclose the motives hidden in the hearts of believers. He will expose every rebellious act, wrong attitude, and cutting word and we will come face to face with just how unworthy we are of His sacrifice on our behalf. But that sorrow will only last for a moment before He will wipe away every tear from our eyes and the joy of knowing His forgiveness and mercy will fill us.

For the Christian, this judgment is not about punishment because we have already been justified by the death and resurrection of Christ. There will be no need to hang our head in guilt and shame. Because His blood cleanses us from all sin, the judgement is more to show just what our sin cost Him and that He has forgiven, pardoned, and redeemed us. When we stand before Him at the final judgment, we will stand clothed in His righteousness and forgiveness of every sin.

Quotes from the Self Care Blog Series

Keeping Ministry Professionals and Lay-Leaders in Ministry

Today’s quote from the Self-Care Blog Series:

web graphic

Physical Self Care:

“For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church.”  Ephesians 5:29 (HCSB)

Today’s quote:

“Think for a moment about all we do to take care of the physical building we call the church. We groom the grounds, clean the bathrooms and stock it with fresh paper towels and toilet paper, replace materials in the seat back pockets, vacuum the carpets and whatever else it needs. We organize workdays for the church members to come do bigger projects or if you’re a non-profit ministry, you might have volunteer groups that come and do work projects for you. Unfortunately, there are times when we can become so absorbed in the aesthetics of our churches, campuses, or grounds that we forget it’s the work Christ does in our various ministries that truly matter – not how pleasing to the eye we look on the outside.

Jeremiah 9:24

But the one who boasts should boast in this, that he understands and knows Me— that I am Yahweh, showing faithful love, justice, and righteousness on the earth,
for I delight in these things.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Psalm 77:11 Remembering What God Has Done

Aug 05 Psalm 77 11

Why is it important to stop and remember what God has done in your life? There are several reasons what taking time to reflect and remember is vital to growing our faith and keeping us on course in our walk with God.

First, when we are in a low place and it seems that finding God is difficult, remembering what He has done for us in the past helps us to trust that God will meet us in our present circumstance also. (Click to tweet) If He was faithful then, He will be faithful again. In the low times, it can be easy to give into the worry, fear, despair, or depression that threatens to overwhelm us. But when we surrender our worry, fear, despair, or depression to God and rest in the arms of His love, we can be reminded of faithfulness and find strength to get through the low and know that there are wonderful things ahead for us to look forward to. Remembering what God has done for us in the past gives up hope. In Isaiah 43:1-3, God says, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pas through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” Remember a previous difficulty you face and think about how God was with you during that time and remember that He is with you now too.

Second, remembering what God has done for us in the past is an opportunity to offer Him praise. (Click to tweet) In Psalms 34:1, the psalmist wrote, “I will praise the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.” It’s easy to praise Him when we can see His mighty works active in our lives, but when we are facing difficulty or trouble it becomes easier to grumble and complain than to praise. It’s a good time to get alone with God and praise Him for what He’s done for you in the past and acknowledge that even if you can’t see it, you know He is at work in the present too. Start a list of God’s mighty works in your life so when you feel you have nothing to praise Him for, you can come back to your list and praise Him for what He’s done for you before. As you go through life, keep adding to your list.

Third, remembering the works of God in our past, keeps our minds and hearts focused on Him. (click to tweet) When life is going great, we can easily fall prey to claiming the glory for ourselves. Our focus becomes all about ourselves. It is human nature to have an “I-dependency” problem. When the promotion comes, it’s “Look what I have achieved.” When there’s a sizeable nest egg stored up, it’s, “Look how much money I have.” When we have that big new home with the fancy car, it’s “Look what I own.” Whenever our “I-dependency” problem shows up, we need to remember 1 Chronicles 29:14, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your own hand.” We can also remember Proverbs 16:9, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.” And Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the Lord’s decree will prevail.” These verses can quickly douse our “I-dependency” problem as we realize that everything we have comes from the hand of God, that He plans our steps, and that what He decrees will happen. When we shift our focus to God and remember His works in our lives, our “I dependency” problem is changed into a God-dependency blessing. (Click to tweet) When we are depending on God instead of ourselves, we can see His blessings in our lives and give Him the glory for it as we thank Him for how he has worked in our lives. With a God-dependency focus that promotion looks more like, “Thank you Lord for this new opportunity. How can I serve in this position that you have placed me in?” When God blesses us financially, it looks more like, “Thank you Lord for your abundant provision. How can I gave out of this abundance to serve you and help others?” When God blesses with a bigger home, a God-dependent focus says, “Thank you God for this home. May you always be welcomed here and may we use this home in ways that please You.”

Fouth, as we remember and focus on what God has done for us in the past, it can help us avoid the trap of sin. I mean, have you ever tried to do something wrong while your mind was focusing on God and remembering what He’s done for you? (Click to tweet) In the Old Testament, the Israelites were carried away into captivity by the Assyrians. Why? 2 Kings 17:7 gives the reason: “And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God… and had feared other gods.” Because they forgot all the mighty works God had done for them, they forgot about God. They turned to worshiping other gods. Today, when we don’t take time to remember what God has done in our lives, we too run the risk of forgetting Him (until we’re in a crisis and need God to rescue us once again!) (Click to tweet) and we too will turn to worshipping other gods – gods such as careers, affluence, material possessions, hobbies, money, etc. Satan is constantly looking for a crack in the door so he can shove his foot in, push the door wide open, and make himself at home. Forgetting God is like swinging the door wide open and inviting Satan in. (Click to tweet). Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:3-5, “We do not wage war in an unspiritual way, since the weapons of our warfare are not worldly, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments and every high-minded thing that is raise up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ.” Taking time to remember the mighty works of God in our lives, slams the door shut on Satan and the temptations that he hurls at us. (Click to tweet)

Psalm 16:8 says, “I keep the Lord in mind always. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Developing the habit of remembering what God has done for us, keeps our minds focused on God’s faithfulness, gives us opportunity to praise Him, help us recognize His blessings, and helps us avoid sin. Take time to remember God’s works in your life. (Click to tweet) Share in the comments something God has done for you today or in the past. Let’s make His praise glorious!
