Hope for Hopeless Sinners

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,

Week 2 of Advent: Hope

Grace and Mercy over Justice Equals Hope

Richard J. Needham said, “Many of those who cry so loudly for justice would soon beg for mercy if justice were done to them.” When it comes to standing before God, I don’t know about you, but it’s mercy that I want – not justice. The Bible is clear that every one of us are sinners (Romans 3:23) and that the justice we deserve for our sins is death (Romans 6:23). If God were only a God of justice – none of us would have any hope. It is only by His grace and mercy that the invitation of salvation was given to us and Ephesians 2:4-5 tells us that we sinners are made acceptable by God’s grace and because of His love for us. It is the very essence of our hope.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.

Our hopeless situation

hopless sinner screen bean

As sinners, we each find ourselves in a hopeless situation. One where we are spiritually dead and enslaved in our sin as we walk among the disobedient and under Satan’s dominion. As such, we are objects of God’s wrath and His justice demands payment and the payment is a debt we are not able pay. It is impossible for us to do enough good works to change our hopeless situation. There is no amount of money large enough to donate to the church to buy your way into eternal life. There is absolutely nothing we sinful humans can do on our own to change the justice we deserve. On our own, our situation is hopeless.

But God is a God who turns hopelessness into hope and abundant life. Here’s how…

We have hope because God is Rich in Mercy and Grace

Mercy is simply God’s compassion for our hopeless and helpless situation and spares us from the justice we deserve. Instead, He shows pity, compassion, and kindness in that He made it possible for us to trade in our hopelessness for His abundant life. However, we must understand that God does not owe us mercy. In fact, mercy cannot be owed because it is given to someone who doesn’t deserve it.

Another aspect of God’s mercy, is that He is rich in mercy – or in other words, He is very patient with us. If God handed out justice immediately upon our first sin, none of us would ever get passed our toddler years. Instead the holy and righteous God chooses to hold off pronouncing judgement to a later time to give us the chance to experience His mercy, repent of our sins, and accept Christ as our Savior. William Farley wrote in Outrageous Mercy: Rediscovering the Radical Nature of the Cross, “The cross displays God’s mercy and grace, and justice, and does so with startling clarity.” Because God’s wrath and mercy met at the cross of Christ who paid our sin debt for us, we have hope and can become a new creation and a child of God.

James 2:13 tells us, “For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” Mercy triumphs over justice, but if we choose to refuse God’s mercy, our hopelessness remains and instead of abundant life, we face eternal damnation. Rejecting God’s mercy is choosing justice and judgement instead of hope and eternal life. But if we reject what He freely offers, then we can expect to receive the justice and wages of our sin – eternal separation from God and an eternity in hell.

God’s Love is Great; therefore our Hope is Great

To see the greatness of God’s love, we only need to look at the cross. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave is only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Jesus, the sinless son of God, took our place. It should have been us on the cross – but Jesus bore all of our sins on himself and willingly went to the cross so that we could receive God’s forgiveness and accept His mercy. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “He made the One [Jesus] who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” As Jesus shed His blood for us, His blood covers all of our sins and God sees us as righteous.

God’s Love is Great, Even while we are still hopelessly lost sinners

Romans 5:8 says, “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinner, Christ died for us.” We often hear stories but soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the platoon or a parent or spouse who steps in front of a bullet. But how often do you hear a story where someone sacrifices their life for their enemy? This is exactly what Jesus did for us. As a lost sinner, we are God’s enemy, but even then Christ loved us enough to die in our place.

Because of God’s rich mercy and great love, He extends grace rather than justice and hope rather than eternal death

saved by grace screen bean

If mercy is God not giving us the punishment and justice we deserve, then grace is God giving us blessings we do not deserve. Instead of justice, God extends his favor towards us when we choose to accept his free gift of salvation by faith in Christ. It is only by His grace that we receive the blessing of salvation and eternal life. It is impossible to earn it.

If I should give you a gift, but you want to pay me for it, it ceases to be a gift. If you work for the gift’s value, it ceases to be a gift. And if you refuse and reject it, then it is no longer a gift. It is only a gift when you reach out and accept it. Christ already paid the price for the gift of salvation – with His life – so that once we accept the gift of salvation our sin debt is marked “paid in full” with the very blood that Jesus shed on the cross in our place. The grace God offers, is the unmerited gift of eternal life.

Justice = Dead in Sin or Grace = Alive in Christ

When we accept God’s generous and loving offer of mercy and grace, He makes us alive together with Christ and gives us abundant and eternal life. Instead of being spiritually dead in our sin, God’s grace and mercy makes us a new creation that is now spiritually alive and when we pass on into eternity, there is a place waiting for us in heaven where we will dwell with Christ.

The work of salvation cannot be accomplished by our works. We can’t earn it and we can’t buy it. The entire process of salvation is an act of God’s goodness and only by His unmerited favor and only for His glory. When we truly see ourselves as the sinners we are and the grace and love that God has for us despite our sinfulness, we must then choose to accept or reject His gift of salvation. Accepting it by faith leads to eternal life in heaven with Christ. Rejecting it leads to the justice we deserve – eternal separation from God in hell. What will you choose?

Hope Revealed through Sacrificial Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Week 2 of Advent: Hope

Sacrificial love always gives so others can have more

During the Christmas season, children always hope to receive the gifts they want. Parents often sacrifice so that the kids can get the gifts they asked for. In today’s world, children don’t always recognize the sacrifices their parents make for them. We don’t always recognize the sacrifices our bosses make, or the ones our spouses make. We take it for granted, or we feel it’s their responsibility to sacrifice, or we feel entitled to receive. However, one little boy recognized through the lesson of fractions the sacrificial love his mother would make.

A teacher had been teaching fractions to her students and wanted to know how much they were understanding the concept. So she asked a boy in the class: “Suppose your mother baked a pie and there are six of you — your mother, your father, and four children. What percentage of the pie would you get?”

“One-fifth,” replied the boy.

Disappointed and wondering how she could explain fractions better, she said to the boy, “I’m afraid you don’t know your fractions. Remember, there are six of you.”

“I know,” said the boy, “but you don’t know my mother. She would say she didn’t want any pie so we could have more.”

Christ wanted us to have more

Christ also wanted us to have more. He wanted us to have hope for eternal life. He wanted us to have hope for redemption of sin. And He wanted us to have hope for a restored fellowship with God. That’s why He left heaven and came to earth.

Before He became our sacrificial-debt-settler, the people had to sacrifice animals over and over again to find redemption for their sins. But that method was a “temporary fix” to our sin problem. It was a representation of what Jesus would do when He came to earth. They only had the hope of the coming Messiah. But a baby changed everything. Christ was the permanent solution. He is our “more.” He is our hope.

Just as the mother’s love for her family is revealed by not wanting pie, so God’s love is revealed to us by sending His One and Only Son to earth as both God and man to live, die, and live again so that our sin debt is paid. So if you’ve ever wondered if God loves you, remember the manger, the cross, and the empty tomb. Because in these, we can have hope.

In 1 John 4:9-10 God reveals His love for us and we see what His love consists of.

God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Actions without Words

A couple sat in a pastor’s office attempting marriage counseling as a last resort before divorce. The pastor asks the husband, “why do you want a divorce?”

“I don’t. I have no idea why she wants this.”

The pastor looked at the wife, “Mrs. Smith, why do you want a divorce?”

Angrily, she blurted, “He just doesn’t love me anymore.”

Shocked by her words, the husband said, “Doesn’t love you? How could you get that idea?”

“Because you never tell me you love me!”

“I say it every single day! I say it when I worked hard to provide for you and when I have been there for you. And I say it when I have stood up for you and defended you. I said it when I gave you children to make sure you would not be alone in your old age. I say it when I make sure your car runs properly so you don’t break down. And I say it every moment of every day because every single thing I do is because I love you!”

The wife burst into tears and ran into her husband’s arms. Instantly, he wrapped his arms around her and tenderly said, “Shh now. Don’t cry.”

The pastor then heard the weeping woman say, “I just needed to hear the words too.”

The husband chuckled and said, “I told you I loved you on our wedding day. If it ever changes, I’ll let you know.”

While the pastor understood the husband was teasing his wife, he cleared his throat and said, “Ummm Tom, I think if I were you I’d say it every day and as often as you can.”

Tom shook the pastor’s hand and said, “Thanks pastor. I got that message loud and clear.”

To know we are loved, we need both words and action

The husband was revealing his love for his wife, but never said the words. He assumed she understood his love for her through his action. After all, actions speak louder than words – right? And yet, she longed to hear the words. Without the words, the husband is just a good provider, protector, and husband. In her mind, for his actions to reveal love, the she needed to hear the words. Without the words, she felt little hope in his love for her and as a result she felt little hope in their marriage.

The opposite could also be true. Someone could tell us they love us but without the actions that reveal that love, we’d sooner or later begin to doubt the words. To know we are loved we need both the words and the actions that back up the words so that the truth of the words is revealed.

God tells us He loves us, but Jesus’ birth proves it

Over and over again in God’s Word, He tell us He loves us. In fact, the Bible is God’s love letter to us. And yet, we want to know the proof of His love. Have you ever said, “If God loves me, then why….” That’s a moment that you’re looking for the proof of His love. Or maybe you feel as if you have sinned too much and there is no hope that God could love you. Maybe you’ve been put down and rejected so often in life that you feel like you are not worthy enough for God’s love. Whatever it is that makes you doubt God’s love for you, then I want you to hear the words of 1 John 4:9-10 because God revealed His love to you in the most expressive and expensive way anyone ever could – He sent us Christ.

Christmas is a celebration of God’s revealed love that gives us hope

As we celebrate Christmas, we are celebrating God’s revealed love to us. Verse 9 says: “God’s love was revealed among us in this way.” God’s love isn’t a mystery or secret or reserved for a few. He wanted us to know and understand His love for us. He wanted us to have the undeniable proof for when we are scared, feel alone, hurt, grieving, or we just don’t understand why something happened. So… He revealed it. Let’s see how He revealed His love to us, what He revealed, and why He revealed it.

God sent us a gift

Don’t you love to receive a gift from your spouse – especially an unexpected gift for no reason other than because of his/her love for you? God sent us a gift – for no other reason than because He loves us. He didn’t have to send it. If God were only a God of judgment he could look at each one of us and say, “Yup. Another broken, imperfect human. That one sinned too.” And then marks you down for the “doomed” list on the way to hell. But God isn’t a God of only judgment. He is also a God of love, grace, and mercy where we can find forgiveness of our sins because of the gift He sent. That’s what Christmas is all about. Celebrating God’s gift He sent to us. As you unwrap gifts this Christmas, I hope it will remind you of God’s gift to you.

God’s gift was His One and Only Son – and that’s our hope

After two miscarriages and nine long months of worry, on the day after Christmas (and the day before my birthday) I finally held in my arms a baby. A little boy, perfectly made. Healthy. The cutest little baby you ever saw. Three and a half years later God surprised with a baby girl who is the sweetest, lovable, and most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen. Today, my son is 24 and my daughter is 21. As they began their college years and then my son got his first apartment, I experienced the part of parenting where you send them out into the world. I thought as Rayce packed up his things and moving day came, how did we get here so quickly?

I remembered sitting on the couch with him as a brand new baby and marveling over his tiny fingers and toes. Then I thought the time when mommy was his world and he wanted to grow up to be an astronaut so he could pick the stars out of the sky and bring them home to mommy. Now, all of a sudden, I have to let him go – into the world. A place of sin and evil.

I spent the day helping Rayce move and settle into his apartment and as I drove away towards home, I felt as if I left part of my heart in that apartment. And I thought, did God feel this way sending Jesus into the world? When God sent us His One and Only Son into the world, He was sending us part of His heart. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” Because God and Jesus are one – when Jesus was born, God literally sent a part of who He is to us.

God sent Jesus so that we could live

Why did He send his Son to us? So that we might live through Him. Because our brokenness and sin separated us from God and the just wages of our sin is death (Romans 6:23), God provided a way to restore our relationship with Him by sending Jesus to earth. Wages are what we are paid for what we do in life. If you work forty hours on your job, you receive wages for your work in the form of a paycheck. The wages we receive for our sin comes in the form of death and eternal separation from God. So God sent Jesus to us to pay the debt for us.

Jesus, who never sinned, took the punishment for our sins in our place. In John 15:13, Jesus said, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” If you ever wonder about Christ’s love for you, then just take time to remember what He went through as part of the cross: the mocking, the hatred of the people, the betrayal of Judas, the crown of thorns, the beating that shredded his body, the nails piercing His hands and feet, the hours of hanging on the cross – just for you.

At any moment He could have said, “Nope – this is more than I bargained for. I didn’t imagine it would be this bad. I’m not doing this.” He could have instantly vanished and returned to heaven and leave us without any hope – but he stayed, humbly being obedient to His Father’s plan for our redemption and endured the torture of the cross and death – for you. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:8, “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross.”

What is God’s love like?

John doesn’t just tell us how God revealed His love for us, but in verse 10, he tell us what is not consisted within His love, what is consisted within His love, and what it cost Him to love us.

God’s love is not based on our love for Him

First, God’s love does not consist of our love for Him. He doesn’t love us because we love Him – He loves us unconditionally – even while we were His enemy. Romans 5:8 says, “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” If God only sent Jesus after we loved him, then Jesus would have never been sent. John wrote in 1 John 4:19, We love because He first loved us. It is because He loved us that He sent Jesus. He loves us whether we love Him or not. There is no part of God’s love for us that is dependent on whether we love Him or not.

God loves us even if we hate Him

Second, God’s love consists of His love for us. Even if you hate God – He still loves you enough that He sent Jesus to die for you in your place – and there is nothing that can change it. Jeremiah 31:3 says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” Psalms 136:26 says that God’s steadfast love endures forever. Lamentations 3:22 says that “steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.”  Isaiah 54:10 says, “For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

God’s love cost Him Something

Third, God’s love is both lavish and expensive. It cost him something – His Son. His love for us consists in Jesus being the propitiation for our sins. The Greek word for “propitiation” is hilasmos and basically it is God’s plan that satisfies the payment for our sins. Because God is a holy God, His anger and justice demands that be punished. When Jesus became our propitiation, he became the appeasement or satisfaction for our sin debt toward God.

He not only appeased God’s wrath, but also provided reconciliation to Him. He became our substitute, taking on himself all the sins of every person and paid the price through agony and blood that washes away sin. Because Christ willingly became our substitute, we can come to Him by faith, ask Him to forgive us our sins, and surrender our lives to Him as we ask Him to be our Savior. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift.”

As with every gift, you must choose to accept or reject God’s gift

With every gift offered, we have a choice to receive and accept the gift or we can decline and reject it. In order for Jesus to be the propitiation for your sins, you much choose to accept His gift through faith. In John 14:6, Jesus said,  “I am the way the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father, but by me.”   There is no other way. Only by faith.

You must believe that Jesus is who He said he was – the Son of God. You must recognize that you are a sinner, lost, and eternally separated from God. And You must acknowledge that the only way to receive God’s forgiveness is through the sacrificial, shed blood of Jesus who died on the cross for you, was buried, and then rose again three days later. Then you can ask Him to forgive you of your sins and invite Him to be your Lord and Savior. A Baby changes everything for us. What will you do with the gift God sent? Will Jesus be born in you this Christmas? Will He be your Hope for everlasting life and a relationship with the God who loves you?

Revelation 22:17. Come

Rev 22 17

At this time of year, many of us receive invitations to parties and events. The office Christmas party. The Church Choir fellowship. The family Christmas dinner. Perhaps you received an invitation to a beautiful Christmas wedding. A New Year’s Eve celebration. Some invitations may have been received through a text. Or maybe through a Facebook event invite. Some may have come with an elegant and costly formal invitation. Perhaps someone you know received a coveted invitation to an event you longed to go to, but you didn’t receive an invite and now you feel hurt, rejected. Without the invite, you don’t have the information to reserve your spot at the event. Without the invite that would be checked at the door, you would never get in.  Of all the invites you could ever receive, there is one in God’s Word that is the most important invitation you’ll ever receive and it’s one that has a required RSVP and the invite will be checked at door.

The good news about this particular invite, which we find in Revelation 22:17, is that itinvite to go with Rev 22 17 has your name on it. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done, where you’ve come from, where you are today, or how many times in the past you’ve declined the invite in the past. If you just read Revelation 22:17, this invite is for you. Read the verse again.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever to come and take a drink of the will, let him take the water of life freely.

That word…whosoever…that means YOU. The invitation is for you. So if you’ve been waiting for your invite – here it is. It is 100% free. You don’t even have to worry about what to wear because Jesus will give you a robe of righteousness and a crown of life.

my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)

he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12)

be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (Revelation 2:10)

You don’t have to worry about transportation because God will send angels to carry you there. We find this in Luke’s gospel in the story of Lazarus and the rich man. As Jesus tells this story, we see two very different people who live very different lives, have very different death experiences, and experience very different eternal destinies. The rich man lived with every luxury known. Jesus said this man was “clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day” (Luke 16:19) It was a great life. But his death was not. The rich man died without ever acknowledging God. Upon entering his eternal destiny, the rich man found himself in the torments of hell. But Lazarus has a very different story. In this life, Lazarus was poor and sickly. Jesus described him as a beggar who sat at the gate of the rich man every day, covered in sores that dogs would lick and hoped for just a few crumbs from the rich man’s table. He may have been physically poor, but spiritually Lazarus rich. Lazarus had chosen to place his faith in God and so when he died he was carried by the angels to his eternal destiny in Heaven. So there is no transportation needed.

When Revelation 22:17 invites each one of us to take freely of the water of life, it means exactly that. It’s free. There is nothing you can do to be accepted into heaven except simply receive this free gift. There is any “good deed” good enough to earn your way to Heaven nor does it matter how many good deeds you do. Our good deeds simply are not good enough. In fact, in the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah paints a rather disgusting picture for even our very best good deeds.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
(Isaiah 64:6)

The Hebrew phrase for “filthy rags” is ukabeged ehdim and literally means, “like as rags of menstruation.” Sorry if that’s disgusting and grosses you out – but it is in the Bible so the rightful credit for such a description is Isaiah’s. However, hopefully you get the picture that no matter what we do, all our acts are disgusting to God and He is repulsed by our efforts to try to earn our way into Heaven. Think about it for a moment. God, out of His love and mercy, has already provided a way for us to get there. That way came at a huge cost to Him – the sacrifice of His Son Jesus. But we want to throw that gift back in his face and try to find our own way to Heaven. Getting to Heaven, sounds rather hopeless – and it is, if we try to do it our own way. Ephesians 2:1 says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” Have you ever seen a dead person do anything for themselves? The only thing a dead person can do is lay there and be…well….dead. That’s it. And that is exactly how hopeless we are to earn salvation apart from God’s plan and His free gift. So how is getting to heaven possible?

Our only hope for eternal life in Heaven is by accept the invitation. We do so by recognizing our hopeless, broken, sinfulness that separates us from God. Then, by faith we believe that God sent his Son to die on the cross, to hang there as our sin, in order to pay the just punishment for sin that we deserved.  Jesus did the work for us. He paid our debt. He took our place. That is our only hope, that Jesus became sin—our sin—and in so doing, he likewise became our righteousness. II Corinthians 5:21 says it well, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

This is why no matter what we do or how good we are God still sees us a filthy rags. Imagine how dishonoring it is to God’s grace and to Christ’s who endured the cross in our place when we try to save ourselves by our acts of righteousness or try to find another way. It is only through the power of Christ’s resurrection and our death to our sinful self (Philippians 3:10-11) that we are changed and given a new heart. Because of what Christ did, we are transformed from hopelessly lost with a destination to hell to gloriously saved with a destination (and a free angelic ride) to heaven. Only after we are transformed are we then able to confess that Jesus is Lord. In that moment, God no longer sees us as a “sinner” but as His child, dearly beloved, justified and cleansed from all sin.

In Revelation 22:17, the invitation is for whosoever will to come freely and take a drink of the water of life. There is no cost because Jesus already paid the expense. What is this water of life that He invites us to drink? During His earthly ministry, Jesus met a spiritually thirsty woman at a well. Her reputation was wretched and she drew water alone and at an inconvenient time of day to avoid the other women. This spiritually thirsty woman was the kind of woman the other women in town gossiped about. She was the sort you didn’t hang out with if you cared about what others think about you. But Jesus had a divine appointment with this outcast woman. You see the disciples and Jesus were traveling and usually the Jews avoided Samaria often taking a longer route to go around it rather than through it.  But John 4:4 says, “He must needs go through Samaria.” Did you catch it? Here it is again: “He must needs go.”  Jesus knew this spiritually thirsty woman would be at the well at that specific time and orchestrated things so that He was there waiting on her. When she arrived, Jesus asked her for a drink of water and engaged her in a conversation about water. He told her that water from Jacob’s well would quench thirst only temporarily but the water He offered would quench thirst forever. Now hauling water in Bible days wasn’t easy, so naturally the Samaritan woman was intrigued by the idea of never being thirsty again. She was still thinking physical while Jesus was talking spiritual. The woman says, “Give me some of this water so I am never thirsty again and don’t have to come to the well and draw water every day.”  After some further conversation, Jesus tells her that He is the Messiah – the one promised to come to save people from their sins. She was so overjoyed that she left her heavy water pot at the well and went into the city telling them all about Jesus and then she brought them to Him.  Jesus is the living water and the invitation extended to “whosoever” is the gift of eternal life.

Yes, eternal life is a free gift. But in order for any gift to become yours, what must you do? If I offer you a gift of some expensive item but you turn and walk away from it, is the gifted item yours? No. For it to become yours, you have to reach out and accept it. The same is true with the free gift of eternal life – and there is only one way to receive it.

In John 14:6 Jesus said: I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. And in John 10:9 he said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved. Luke wrote in Acts 4:12, And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

John 10 9Jesus is the only way. He is the door to Heaven. There is no other way. As a kid, we used to sing a song that says:

One door, and only one
And yet its sides are two,
Inside and outside,
On which side are you?
One Door, and only one,
And yet its sides are two,
I’m on the inside,
On which side are you?

Those on the inside are the ones who placed their faith in Jesus, and asked Him to be their Lord and Savior. Lazarus is on the inside. Jesus stands at the doorway to Heaven. He is the door. To gain entrance you have to go through Him. He’s not only issued the invitation to you – but if you accept, he will provide you with the appropriate attire and your transportation for getting there.

Come. Whoever you are. Come. Come drink of the living water. The invitation has been offered. Will you accept it?

776585: Letters to the Church Letters to the Church

By Francis Chan / David C Cook

If God had it His way, what would our churches look like?

In his most powerful book yet, Pastor Francis Chan digs deep into biblical truths, reflections on his own failures and dreams, and stories of ordinary people God is using to change the world.

As Chan says, “We’ve strayed so far from what God calls Church. We all know it. We know that what we’re experiencing is radically different from the Church in Scripture. For decades, church leaders like myself have lost sight of the inherent mystery of the Church. We have trained people sitting in the pews to become addicted to lesser things. It’s time for that to change.”

When Jesus returns, will He find us caring for His Bride-even more than for our own lives? Letters to the Church reminds us of how powerful, how glorious the Church once was … and calls us to once again be the Church God intended us to be.

Bonus Videos: The 4 videos from Francis Chan’s BASIC Study series (Fellowship, Communion, Teaching, Prayer) are included here as additional material for you to feel free to use in your church. They are not part of the “Letters to the Church” series.

291119: Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It. Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It.

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

New York Times bestselling author and pastor Mark Batterson believes the key to radically increasing your faith, joy, and abundance can be found in these three words:

Flip the blessing.

His discovery started with a simple experiment. Whenever he received a blessing, he would give a similar blessing away. If someone paid him a compliment or gave him a gift or went out of their way to help him, he would return the favor by doing something similar for someone else.

We flip the blessing by blessing others in the way God has blessed us. That’s how the blessing becomes a double blessing. It turns giving into a game–one we can’t win because God will always outgive us! It’s an ancient truth found within the Abrahamic covenant: “I will bless you…and you will be a blessing.”

In other words, we are blessed to bless. In a day and age where the idea of blessing has been reduced to a hashtag (#blessed), Batteron challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing. Don’t settle for half of what God offers. Discover how you can both get it and give it.

God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars: 365 Daily Challenges to Grow Your Marriage - By: Julia M. Bruce God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars: 365 Daily Challenges to Grow Your Marriage

By Julia M. Bruce / WestBow Press

Heaven is Real – but so is Hell. Which will you choose?

rev 21 8Hell is a real place. It’s made of stuff that is worse than your worst nightmare! 1 John 1:9 says, “God is love.” So if God is love, then why does He send people to Hell? The answer is he doesn’t. People choose Hell as their eternal destination when they reject God and His free gift of salvation through Jesus.

Hell was created for Satan who once was an archangel in Heaven, named Lucifer. Lucifer became jealous of God and decided he wanted to be God. As a result, he and one-third of the angels in heaven attempted a coup in Heaven. Only, they were defeated. God created hell for Lucifer and his followers. Lucifer is more commonly called the Devil or Satan. In the Bible he is also called the Great Deceiver. His followers are known as demons. God created Hell for Satan and his demons.

When man sinned way back in the Garden of Eden, a great divide was created between a holy and righteous God and sinful man. God created man to have fellowship with us. Yet, when man sinned, God’s holiness could not look on sin and God had to judge sin. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. Wages are what you earn for a certain action. If you get up and go to work every day this week, the wages you earn will show up in your paycheck. The wages we earn for our sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Just as a child has consequences for disobeying his or her parents, so there are consequences when we disobey God. As a result, we are all spiritually dead in our sin until the moment that we accept Christ as our Savior. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth as a baby, lived among us, and then he paid our sin debt for us. Remember that our wages for sin is death – Christ died in our place. He was buried in a tomb for three days and then rose again. When we recognize our own brokenness and sin and that we are on our way to Hell as payment for our sin, we have the realization that we are a sinner. We then have a choice to remain lost in our sin or to come to Christ by faith in who he is and what he did for us and ask him to forgive us and cleans us of all our sin. (1 John 1:9). As we invite Him to be our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit moves in and dwells within us.

One of the most amazing concepts is that when God created man, He knew man would sin. He knew I would sin. He knew you would sin. He also knew that because of that sin, He would have to send His only begotten Son to this earth to pay our sin debt. Even knowing what it would cost Him, he created us anyway.

Yes, God is love. We know He is love because even when he knew from before the world was created that you and I would sin, he still created us and he still provided a way to restore fellowship with us and redeem us from our broken, sinfulness. He knew every sin of our entire lives. He knew that we would need someone to save us from those sins and so in his love and mercy, he sent his son to die a horrible, cruel death in our place so that we would not have to spend eternity in hell.

Why then do people go to hell? Because they reject the free gift of Christ’s sacrifice and payment of our sin debt. They turn away from it. Revelation 21:8 says, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and the murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Sinners do not want to be confronted with their sin. They would rather create laws that will legalize sin than to confess their sin. They think if they can make a sin legal in the eyes of man they will not be guilty. However, no law of man would over over-rule God’s law and when we stand before God at the end of our lives he will judge us according to His laws – not man’s. At that time, he will either see you covered in the blood of Christ which cleanses you from all unrighteousness and you will spend eternity in Heaven with him or the sins of your entire life will be exposed and you will hear God say the worst words you could ever hear: “Depart from me for I never knew you.” My friend, God does not send people to hell. They send themselves.

What is hell like? Pastor Rick Warren describes it like this:

In human terms, it’s tough to define Hell. It’s like trying to explain the Internet to an ant.

But Jesus actually talked more about Hell than Heaven. And to read how Jesus — and others in the Bible — described it, we don’t want to have any part of it, and we don’t want anyone we know to have any part in it.

So what does the Bible say about Hell?

  1. It’s a place of torment. Luke 13:28 says that in Hell, “You will cry and be in extreme pain” (GW). We get our visions of fire and agony in Hell from the Bible.
  2. It’s a place of complete separation from God and other people. That’s the worst part of Hell. Go through your whole life saying you don’t want to have anything to do with God, and you’ll eventually get your way. Hell means total separation from God. “If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be separated from God — lost forever!” (1 Corinthians 16:22a ERV)
  3. It’s a place without love. The Bible tells us that God is love. Without God, we’ll spend forever without his love in Hell. The Bible also says, “There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear” (GNT). What’s it like to live without God’s love? It means you’re scared to death all the time.

Everyone who goes to Hell chooses to do so. They’ll get what they always thought they wanted — a life away from God. You don’t want that! You don’t want Hell.

The Bible says that Hell is place for wicked souls; it is referred to as a fiery furnace, a place of unquenchable fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, constant and eternal torment; there will be no rest; there is condemnation and destruction; you will be eternally separated from God; it is a place of outer darkness; it is a lake of burning sulfur; and there will be eternal suffering. Yet any description we give it, will not compare the just how horrible spending eternity in hell will be.

How do you not spend eternity in hell? By placing your faith and trust in the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. His death on the cross paid your sin debt. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” He died in your place so that you do not have to spend eternity in hell.  In 1974, a movie was made and shown in churches across the country. “The Burning Hell” is a 58 minute film created by the evangelist Estus Pirkle. This film is Pirkle’s interpretation of what the Bible has to say about hell and you can watch it on YouTube here.

Heaven or hell….the choice is yours. Eternity in hell….or eternity in heaven. What is heaven like? A river, clear as crystal, will flow from the throne of God and of the Lamb [Jesus] down the middle of the city. On each side of the river there will be a tree of life, yielding twelve kinds of fruit every month. The streets will be pure gold, like transparent glass. The walls of the city will be adorned with every kind of jewel, emerald, onyx, amethyst, topaz, etc. There will be no need for a sun or moon, and no need for a temple or church. The presence of the Lord will be its light. There will be no sickness or pain, no death, no tears or sorrow.

Just as our human mind cannot accurately envision the horrors of hell, so can we not fully imagine the splendor and glory of heaven. Yes, my friend, God is love and He invites you right now to spend eternity in heaven with him. Romans 10:13 says, “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

“Whosoever” that means you!

If that is your heart’s desire, then you can pray the following prayer:

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

If you just prayed this prayer, please let us know through the contact us page. You will also want to find an evangelical church and talk with a pastor so that he can lead you through the next steps, being baptized, and growing as a Christian. If you just prayed that prayer, then welcome to the family of God! I look forward to meeting you in Heaven one day.

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

His exploration of fasting will help you understand how this ancient biblical practice can nourish your spiritual life and satisfy your longings. 201 pages, softcover from Crossway.

407250: Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We"ve Made Up Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We’ve Made Up

By Francis Chan & Preston Sprinkle / David C Cook

In Erasing Hell, Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle take on the topic of hell and our eternal destiny, with a sense of humility and a deep respect for the inspired Word of God. They will address questions such as “Will everyone be saved?” and “Does God Get What He Wants in the End?” as well as reviewing in depth, everything Jesus said about Hell. Chan and Sprinkle lay all the evidence on the table and present all the facts from Scripture, so that people can decide what to believe for themselves.

Instead, he dares you to choose a radical life of spiritual surrender—beginning today. 160 pages, hardcover from Zondervan.

291089: Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

God still speaks today. His voice and guidance wasn’t only for the saints and prophets of old, but for followers of Jesus now. In Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God, author and pastor Mark Batterson shares seven ways that God communicates with His followers, if they’ll stop to listen. Through the tools of Scripture, Doors, Dreams, People, Promptings, and Pain, God weaves divine messages of love, encouragement and insight, into our lives every day. Hardcover.

Psalm 80:1-7 and 17-19

Dec 23

Listen, Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned on the cherubim, rise up before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Rally Your power and come to save us. Restore us, God; look on us with favor, and we will be saved. Lord God of Hosts, how long will You be angry with Your people’s prayers? You fed them the bread of tears and gave them a full measure of tears to drink. You make us quarrel with our neighbors; our enemies make fun of us. Restore us, God of Hosts; look on us with favor, and we will be saved.

Let Your hand be with the man at Your right hand, with the son of man You have made strong for Yourself. Then we will not turn away from You; revive us, and we will call on Your name. Restore us, Yahweh, the God of Hosts; look on us with favor, and we will be saved.

340591: The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger

By Lee Strobel / Zondervan

Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? Some say he would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God.

Who was he really? And how can you know for sure?

Consulting experts on the Bible, archaeology, and messianic prophecy, award-winning legal journalist Lee Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger. If Jesus really was God in the flesh, then there ought to be credible evidence, including:

  • Eyewitness Evidence – Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?
  • Scientific Evidence – What does archaeology reveal?
  • Profile Evidence – Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of God?
  • Fingerprint Evidence – Did Jesus uniquely match the identity of the Messiah?

The Case for Christmas invites readers to consider why Christmas matters in the first place. Somewhere beyond the traditions of the holiday lies the truth. This little book is perfect as a gift or for use in ministry during the Christmas season or any other time of the year.
