What to do when a Goliath is in our path

All of us face a Goliath at some point in our lives – a giant sized problem that is overwhelming and beyond our capabilities to fight. We could certainly call COVID19 a giant sized problem. In fact, its a worldwide sized problem. But there are also giant-sized problems that come in the way of finances, health crises, children with behavior problems, abuse, racism, and the list could go on and on.

What do we do with our Goliaths?

What do we do with the Goliaths that come into our lives, upsetting the way we live? Do we worry or even panic? Do we become angry, and bitter? If so, this demonstrates a lack of trust in God and we can see in the Biblical account of David and Goliath that Israel lacked trust in God when their giant stood before them.

In fact, the Israelite army was so intimidated by Goliath that you could have probably heard their armor pieces clanking together as they quivered in their boots. King Saul even offered his daughter in marriage and riches galore to anyone who could kill Goliath. But no one was found brave enough to go up against Goliath. What made Goliath such a scary person?

Meet Goliath, the most famous giant of all

According to the Bible, Goliath was 9 feet, 9 inches tall. Just his armor alone weighed 125 pounds. The iron point of his spear weighed 15 pounds and he had someone that walked before him, carrying a shield. He was a giant bully that taunted the Israelites to the point that they lost courage and were terrified. Now I am not quite 5.5 feet tall and my husband is just over 6 feet tall – can you image someone almost 10 feet tall? That would be like me standing on Brian’s shoulders and the two of us together would almost equal how tall Goliath was.

Now look again at how much his armor and gear weighed. He wasn’t a scrawny 9 feet, 9 inches tall – he would be more like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at 9 feet, 9 inches or Chris Hemsworth at 9 feet, 9 inches tall. He was all muscle to carry that kind of weight around and still be able to use it all in battle. So to give the Israelites some credit, I’d be shaken in my battle armor too if that’s what I had to go fight against. Understandably, not one of the seasoned soldiers from Israel wanted to go up against this giant.

I will fight Goliath!

In all of Israel, there was only one person that said, “I will do it.”  It was a small shepherd boy, named David who showed an unwavering faith in God. What was the difference between David and the Israelite army? The Israelite army only saw the power and strength of Goliath – David only saw the power and strength of God. To David, God’s honor was at stake and he was willing to stand up for God.

Fear and doubt creeps in when we take our eyes off God and only see the Goliath in front of us

The question we must each ask ourselves is: “When a Goliath is in our path do we focus on the giant and quiver in fear or do we focus on God and stand strong in faith?” When we take our eyes off God and begin to focus on the giant in our lives, we become terrified, just like the Israelite army. We begin to doubt if God will come through and defeat the giant for us. We begin to wonder if God is listening to our prayers. Or we wonder where God is and why isn’t He doing something!

But when we take our eyes of the giant and let them rest on God, then He gently reminds us that He holds us in the palm of His hand and He tells us our name is inscribed on His palm. His Holy Spirit whispers across our heart that God is working in ways we could never know and even when we don’t understand, we can rest in his everlasting and faithful love.

Renew your faith and trust God to take care of your Goliaths

Dear fellow Christian soldier, renew your faith! Turn your eyes to focus on God, because with God, anything is possible – even killing a giant with one small stone and sling. That’s all it took for David to kill Goliath. And for COVID19, keep praying for God’s healing for who is sick and for Him to remove this virus from existence. Keep your faith and focus on God – not on the giant. Allow God to have the glory over your giant. Go ahead and cast all your cares on Him – and leave them there – because God cares about you and every little (or big) detail of your life. (1 Peter 5:7)

Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we will post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

March 18-24

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.

 Meditate and apply:

  1. What is it in your life that brings fear?
  2. What are the “giants” you are facing today?
  3. Meditate on the truth that God goes with you into every battle and that He will never leave you or forsake you.

Numbers 14:11 -When God asks, “How Long?”

Feb 26 Numbers 14 11 NKJV

The Israelites had a problem. It was a trust problem. They didn’t trust God to come through on His promises. For every problem they encountered, they verbally attacked Moses and complained to him for taking them out of Egypt. Egypt: it wasn’t the land of promise. It wasn’t home. The nation had entered Egypt back when Joseph had been sold there as a slave (by his own brothers!)  and then become the 2nd most powerful man in the country. A famine came and his brothers came to Egypt to buy grain. Eventually, the family moved there and were given land all to themselves. The Pharaoh of that day dies and a new guy is on the throne and notices just how many Israelites there are and become afraid that they will become mightier than Egypt and take the country away from him so he makes them all slaves. Yet even as slaves, God blesses the nation and they multiply, fulfilling the promise He made to Abraham that Abraham would be a father of many and his descendants would be more numerous than the stars. God eventually sends Moses to take them out of Egypt using 12 plagues. After they leave, Pharaoh decides to pursue them and bring them back. God again miraculously saves them as they walk across the Red Sea on dry ground and the Egyptian army is destroyed as the water close back over them. But that’s not all of God’s “signs” that he performed for the people. When they wanted meat in the wilderness, God sent them quail in large numbers. He gave them manna every morning. When they needed water, He provided water from a rock. Not to mention that there was a cloud of God’s glory that led them in the day and a pillar of fire by night.

Now, in Number 14, the Israelites are ready to cross over and enter Canaan – the land promised to Abraham. The time had come. God had already promised them the land. It was theirs. All they had to do was take possession and trust that God had a plan. Instead, they send 12 spies to investigate and the report that they brought back included words like “giants in the land” and “we are as grasshoppers in their sight.” The people took their eyes of God and saw a problem they could not overcome. They were afraid. They didn’t trust God’s plan. They decide they are going to select a new leader and return to Egypt instead of taking the land God promised them. They were going to go back to slavery rather than live in freedom. That decision prompts God to ask, “How long will these people reject Me?”

When I look around the world today, I wonder if God is asking that question of our nations today. Our nations are much like the Israelites. We’d rather live in the slavery of sin than to live in the freedom of salvation. America and the other nations around the world would do well to  consider God’s words that follow this question.  God says that He would strike them with pestilence and disinherit them. We can only reject God for so long before God says, “enough is enough” and judgement is rendered.

Moses is often seen interceding on behalf the Israelites and as a result, Moses changes God’s mind. Today, its time for Christians around the world to intercede on behalf of their nation. It’s past time for us to pray for a revival and a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It’s time for us to realize that revival begins inside of each one of us. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Lord, we humble ourselves before you today, praying, and seeking your face with a desire to turn from our wicked ways. We pray that you will hear us from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land. Send a revival, let and let it begin in me.
