1 Samuel 17:26. What to do With the Goliaths We Face

April 15 1 Samuel 17 26 KJV

All of us face a Goliath at some point in our lives – a giant sized problem that is overwhelming and beyond our capabilities to fight. We could certain call COVID19 a giant sized problem. In fact, its a worldwide sized problem.

What do we do with the Goliaths that come into our lives, upsetting the way we live? Do we worry or even panic? Do we become angry, and bitter? If so, this demonstrates a lack of trust in God. The Israelite army was so intimidated by Goliath that you could have probably heard their armor pieces clanking together as they quivered in their boots. King Saul even offered his daughter in marriage and riches galore to anyone who could kill Goliath. What made Goliath such a scary person?

According to the Bible, Goliath was 9 feet, 9 inches tall. Just his armor alone weighed 125 pounds. The iron point of his spear weighed 15 pounds and he had someone that walked before him, carrying a shield. Goliath taunted the Israelites to the point that they lost courage and were terrified. Now I am not quite 5.5 feet tall and my husband is just over 6 feet tall – can you image someone almost 10 feet tall? That would be like me standing on Brian’s shoulders and the two of us together would equal how tall Goliath was. Then look again at how much his armor and gear weighed. He wasn’t a scrawny 9 feet, 9 inches tall – he would be more like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at 9 feet, 9 inches or Chris Hemsworth at 9 feet, 9 inches tall. He was all muscle to carry that kind of weight around and still be able to use it all in battle. So to give the Israelites some credit, I’d be shaken in my battle armor too if that’s what I had to go fight against. Not one of the seasoned soldiers from Israel wanted to go up against this giant.

In all of Israel, there was only one person that said, “I will do it.”  It was a small shepherd boy, named David who showed an unwavering faith in God. What was the difference between David and the Israelite army? The Israelite army only saw the power and strength of Goliath – David only saw the power and strength of God. To David, God’s honor was at stake and he was willing to stand up for God.

The Israelite army only saw the power and strength of Goliath – David only saw the power and strength of God. — Click to tweet

When we take our eyes off God and begin to focus on the giant in our lives, we become terrified, just like the Israelite army. We begin to doubt if God will come through and defeat the giant for us. We begin to wonder if God is listening to our prayers. We wonder where God is and why isn’t He doing something! But when we take our eyes of the giant and let them rest on God, then He gently reminds us that He holds us in the palm of His hand and He tells us our name is inscribed on His palm. His Holy Spirit whispers across our heart that God is working in ways we could never know and even when we don’t understand, we can rest in his everlasting and faithful love.

Dear fellow Christian soldier, renew your faith! Turn your eyes to focus on God, because with God, anything is possible – even killing a giant with one small stone and sling. That’s all it took for David to kill Goliath. And for COVID19, keep praying for God’s healing for who is sick and for Him to remove this virus from existence. Keep your faith and focus on God – not on the giant. Allow God to have the glory over your giant. Go ahead and cast all your cares on Him – and leave them there – because God cares about you and every little (or big) detail of your life. (1 Peter 5:7)

God, thank you that you care about everything we face in life. COVID19 took us by surprise, but you were never surprised. We ask your healing touch on all who are sick around the world. Father, remove this virus from existence. Call your people back to you and heal our land. Help us to always keep our faith in You, casting our cares on You, and allow You to receive all honor and glory in every way that You work in our lives. Help us to see the giants through eyes of faith and not eyes of fear. Help us to only see Your power and strength.

memory verse logoIn 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem. You will begin to see the elements of our website and posts reflect this emphasis. We hope you’ll join us in praying for God to pour out the Holy Spirit with a mighty rushing wind of revival for our nation and around the world.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  For the past few  weeks, we have been focusing on repentance. This week, we look at the spiritual transformation that takes place when we surrender our heart to God.

This week’s memory verse:

Matthew 28:5-6

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

078924: A Nation in Crisis

A Nation in Crisis

By Ray Stedman / Discovery House

Every day the headlines announce more violence and evil. Our hearts groan as we wonder what life will be like for the next generation. It all seems hopeless, which is probably how Jeremiah felt as he lived among the people of the nation of Judah.

Jeremiah was a reluctant but faithful prophet who spent forty-two years serving God and warning the people to repent. His heart was saddened and angered by the people’s indifference to God and the moral decay that surrounded him. Everything was falling apart–yet Jeremiah continued to seek the Lord.

As we face personal trauma and national crisis, we can learn from the prophet’s example. Ray Stedman walks us through the book of Jeremiah, revealing that repentance was the only answer then–and it’s the only answer today. When people repent, God is faithful to His Word, planting the seeds of new life and giving us hope.

Come Down, Lord!

By Roger Ellsworth / Banner of Truth

Come Down, Lord! is a succinct, readable and biblically-based treatment of the vital theme of revival. Its seven short chapters go directly to the heart of the matter, as their headings indicate: We miss You; We need you; We wait for You; We will meet You; We have wronged You; We belong to You; We beseech You.Taking as his starting place the widespread absence of the sense of God’s holy presence and our need of his grace, Roger Ellsworth traces the profound analysis of the church’s spiritual decay outlined in Isaiah 63:3-64:12, and applies its message to our times.

1 Samuel 16:7. Outward vs. Inward

April 14 1 Samuel 16 7 How many times do we have this certain “mold” of a person that God would call to a task and if the person doesn’t fit the mold, then certainly God didn’t call them? Maybe its yourself and you’ve felt God tugging on your heart to do something but because of something in your past you’ve convinced yourself that God wouldn’t call you to do that task. Maybe its someone you know who feels called but because you know them well and know what they’ve been through in the past you can’t believe God could ever use them. Let me remind you about this story in 1 Samuel 16. At this point, God instructs Saul (through Samuel) to wipe out Amalek. He was given very detailed instructions – no one or nothing was to be left alive. Saul takes his army and wipes them out, but he keeps the king alive and they keep all the best, of the sheep and oxen. As a result God reject Saul as king. God then tells Samuel to go Bethlehem to the family of Jesse and anoint a new king. When he arrives at Jesse’s home, he has Jesse bring all his sons in and Samuel waits for God to point out the one he is to anoint. One by one, seven of Jesse’s sons are present to Samuel – but none of them are God’s choice. In fact as the first son is present, Samuel says to himself, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before Him.” But God was quick to tell Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the Lord sees. for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.” When God looks for a person to do a task – he’s not looking for the best looking, or the best fit, or the best dressed, or the best speaker. He’s looking for the heart that is “in tune” with His. In fact, after all seven of Jesse’s son were presented to Samuel, Samuel says to Jesse, “Are these all your sons?” Jesse’s response was “There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” God chose the youngest, most unlikely of Jesse’s sons to be anointed as king in Saul’s place. So before you judge yourself or anyone else as to whether or not God has called you or them, remember that God doesn’t look at the outward appearance. He doesn’t’ look at what’s in the past (especially after the past has been covered with forgiveness). What God looks at is the heart of a person and is that heart in tune with His. If you are hung up on your own past or someone else’s past remember that God often uses those trials to grow us into what He wants us to be. He can use the things others have done to us for our good and his glory. If you doubt that, just look at Joseph. Joseph’s own brothers sold him into slavery, but God used that to save the family from a severe famine that would occur some years later.  God likes to use people who are willing to be used and who are people that typically would not be seen as the kind of person one expects God to choose. Why? Because then God gets the glory for the work He does through that life. So what is the heart that God chooses? A heart that is humble, obedient, and willing. He’s looking for the heart that is burdened for the lost. He’s looking for the heart that loves without discrimination or judgement. He looking for heart that is willing to serve others. He’s looking for a heart sold out to Him no matter the cost. Father, give us eyes to see as you see. Help us to break the “mold” we have set for the type of person you call to serve you and help us to remember that its the heart that matters.  April divider revive renew redeem

1 Samuel 13:14. Who Does God Seek?

April 13 1 Samuel 13 14

Who is the man – or woman – after God’s own heart? These are the words that God used to described David. In 1 Samuel 13, King Saul had been given instruction to wait seven days for Samuel to come who would then sacrifice to the Lord. But the Philistines were getting ready for battle and Saul’s army became scared and they started scattering. Saul waited the seven days, but not long enough. He chose to do the sacrifice himself. Samuel came right after it had been done. He asked Saul, “What have you done?” Saul says, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” Samuel then responds, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

For the sake of a few more moments, and Saul lost the right to be king. Waiting on God can be hard – but how often do we lose the blessing for the sake of waiting just a little longer? Saul didn’t trust or believe that Samuel would arrive on time so he overstepped his bounds and the result was losing the kingship.

So then what does a man after God’s own heart look like? If this is the kind of person God seeks – then we need to know what this person is like a strive to be like him. Let look at some of the characteristics of David to see what this person is like.

  • He had a love for God’s Word.  David wrote in Psalm 119:11, “Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.”
  • He earnestly sought the Lord. “With my whole heart have I sought thee” (Psalm 119:10)
  • He loved communicating with God. “I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.” (Psalm 116:1-2)
  • He loved praising God. “I will praise thee, Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvelous works.” (Psalm 9:1) In Palm 104:33, he wrote:  “I will sing to the LORD as long as I live. I will praise my God to my last breath!”
  • He hated anything that went against God’s commands. “I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them. I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil… I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach… I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.” Psalm 101:3-4, 6-7)
  • He fulfilled God’s Will. Luke wrote in Acts 13:22, “he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will.”

What about you? Do you love God’s Word? Do you love spending time communicating with God through prayer? Do you seek God with all of your heart? Do you love praising Him? Do you have a hatred for sin? Are you willing to fulfill all of God’s will? The person who is “after God’s own heart” is one who’s heart is aligned with God’s. Would God say you are a man – or woman – after His heart?

Father, may we strive to be people after your heart. People who long to hear from you through your Word, long to speak to you through prayer, joyfully offering praise to you, willing to follow your will, and detest anything that does not bring you honor.

Don’t forget to learn this week’s memory verse:

Memorize and hide in your heart one memory verse each week in 2020. If you didn’t start the challenge at the beginning of the year, just jump in now and be sure to sign up to get our weekly Memory verse in your email so you don’t miss a week.

memory verse logoIn 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem.

There’s no doubt that marriage is hard work. Yet it can also be one of the most fulfilling relationships you can experience, outside of your relationship with God. However, many marriages leave God outside of the relationship. Godly marriages do not happen without cultivating it, investing in it, and putting God first in your individual lives and in your marriage.
This book includes 365 daily activities and takes you on a journey through Biblical principles about Godly marriage that you can then apply to your marriage, as well as helping you talk through concepts that can help you develop a solid relationship. Inside you will find simple, quick activities that include:

• Scripture to memorize and meditate on
• Conversation Starters
• Concepts from the Bible on Godly marriages
• Romance Builders
• Relationship Builders
• Personal reflections
• Date ideas
• Group date ideas for you and other Christian couples
