God Himself is Judge

In Psalm 50, we find God’s standards for living as part of His covenant people and he calls the heavens and earth as witnesses as God himself sits as judge over His people for whether or not they are living godly lives or just moving through the motions with hearts that do not worship and lips that do not praise. This psalm is a warning to avoid ritualism and hypocrisy before God.

The setting of the psalm is comparable to a courtroom: God, the Judge, appears in a theophany, a visible manifestation to humankind of God (verses 1-3), and calls for a hearing (verses 4-6) in which the heavens and earth being called as witnesses. The accusations are twofold: First, ritualism. God’s people must realize that true worship does not consist of mere sacrifice, but of sacrifice offered with thanksgiving and faithfulness (verses 7-15). Second, hypocrisy. The wicked are denounced for not keeping God’s law, though they pretend that they do. In reality, they are those who “forget God” (verse 22), and face certain destruction unless they repent.

The Lord God, the Supreme Judge, levels two felony charges against His professing people: Ritualism and Hypocrisy

The Mighty One, God the Lord

The psalm opens up with telling us that “the Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth. The Psalmist heaps together these divine names as if a herald were proclaiming the titles of a might king and each name has its own meaning. “The Mighty One God the LORD” is really one of the compound names for God that combine some of His primary names. In this case, ’El’Elohim, and Yahweh (Jehovah).

El speaks of God as mighty. El appears to mean “power” and “might”. The name is associated with other qualities, such as integrity, jealousy, and compassion, but the root idea of “mighty” remains. El is often combined with other names to demonstrate the characteristics of God.

Elohim is a Hebrew word that denotes “God” or “god.” It is one of the most common names for God in the Old Testament. The basic meaning behind the name Elohim is one of strength or power of effect. Elohim is the infinite, all-powerful God who shows by His works that He is the creator, sustainer, and supreme judge of the world.

Yahweh (Jehovah), strictly speaking, is the only proper name for God. Translated in English Bibles “LORD” (all capitals) to distinguish it from Adonai, “Lord.” The revelation of the name is given to Moses “I Am who I Am”. This name specifies an immediacy, a presence. Yahweh is present, accessible, near to those who call on Him for deliverance, forgiveness, and guidance.

The Witnesses

As creator, God calls on the witnesses who were present when he made the covenant with his people. Verse one says that God speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. The idea is that God has come to Jerusalem to judge the world, and the entire earth is gathered for that purpose. Heaven and earth, the whole world of nature, are summoned to be witnesses of the judgement, for they are far older than man, and have watched the whole course of Israel’s history.

The Targum interprets these witnesses of heaven and earth as the angels above on high, and the righteous on the earth below. Either way, these witnesses are called to hear what the Judge [God] shall say, when He will no longer keep silent; and to be witnesses of the justice of His proceedings.

God Himself is Judge

When he comes, he will not keep silent just as he did not when he met the people at Mt. Sinai. In Exodus 19:16, Moses brought the people of God out of the camp to meet with God and there were “thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.”

The Psalmist writes in Psalm 50 that before God is a devouring fire and around him a mighty tempest. It is the moment of accounting and God’s people will stand before Him as He judges them. Spurgeon writes, “Fire is the emblem of justice in action, and the tempest is a token of his overwhelming power.” The idea is, that an event so momentous should be conducted in a way suited to produce an appropriate impression; so conducted, that there would be a universal conviction of the justice and impartiality of the sentence. (Barnes’ Notes on the Bible)

The New Testament has stated the fact that this will be done by the coming of his Son Jesus Christ to gather the nations before him, and to pronounce the final sentence on mankind (Matt. 25:31; Acts 17:31; 10:42; John 5:22). At that time, God will no longer remain silent about the sins of mankind, but will act as a righteous judge.

Who will God judge?

Who will God judge? God’s people. The ones who were consecrated and set apart to Him. His godly ones. The people who made a covenant with God by sacrifice. God will exam them by the standard of their agreement with God. In other words, God will determine if His people are doing what they said they would do. God will judge to determine whether they were truly his.

Charge 1: Ritualism

The first indictment is about ritualism in worship (Psalm 50:7-15). Here the accused are addressed as “Israel”, and are reassured that they are dealing with (literally) “I, God your God” (Psalm 50:7). It is not that God was against the sacrifices altogether (Psalm 50:8) – after all, He had commanded them, and they pointed forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus (Hebrews 10:4-10). However, He was refusing to accept their sacrifices as long as they were offered as bribes, or as long as people imagined that He benefited from them. This is like church people imagining that their attendance at church earns them credits with God, or that their sacrificial giving is somehow them helping God!

Charge 2: Hypocrisy

The second indictment is about hypocrisy (Psalm 50:16-22). Here the accused are addressed quite bluntly as “the wicked” (Psalm 50:16): “What right have you to declare My statutes, or to take My covenant in your mouth, seeing you hate instruction and cast My words behind you?” (Psalm 50:16-17). “You thought that I was altogether one such as yourself” (Psalm 50:21).

Hypocrisy, play-acting, lurks in many a dark corner in many a church and theological faculty – and in our own hearts. It is one thing to ‘talk the talk’ as the saying goes, but it is quite another to ‘walk the walk’. What good is all our religion if we have not justice, mercy and faith? The second indictment ends with a solemn warning in Psalm 50:22. ““Mark this, then, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver! 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 says, “in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.”

Who will withstand before the righteous judge?

Who will withstand before the righteous judge? We find the answer in Psalm 50:23. If we are to be found innocent of the charge of ritualism, we must be a people who offers praise and glorifies God. Paul tells us how to do this in Romans 12:1. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

In answer to the second charge of hypocrisy, it is to the one who orders his conduct rightly that God will show His salvation. James wrote in James 3:13, “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.”

If you were to stand before God on these two charges of ritualism and hypocrisy, would you be found guilty or will you be judged as “the one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice” and thereby glorifies God. Will the righteous Judge find you as “one who orders his way rightly?” If so, the He will show you the salvation of God.

The Cost of Lying to the Holy Spirit?

Have you ever seen kids having a conversation and one of them puts their hand behind their back and crosses their fingers so that the lie they are telling isn’t a lie? Or maybe they say, “Cross my heart, hope to die” as a means of saying “I’m telling you the truth”? Ananias and Sapphira found out that lying to the Holy Spirit is no small sin – fingers crossed or not – and it cost them everything.

A Guilty Couple

At the end of Acts 4, believers were selling their possessions and bringing the money to the apostles who then distributed it evenly so that everyone’s needs were being met. Chapter 4 closes out telling us about Barnabas who sold a piece of property and brought the money to the apostles. Chapter 5 opens up with telling us about a husband and wife, Ananias and Sapphira, who sold a possession and kept part of the proceeds for themselves. However, when they brought the rest of it to the apostles, they told the apostles they were giving the entire selling price.

Sin #1: Lying to the Holy Spirit

There was nothing wrong with them keeping part of the money from the sell of their possession. The sin came when they told the disciples they were giving the entire amount of the selling price to the work of God when in fact, they were only giving a portion of it. They may not have actually slipped their hand behind their backs with fingers crossed, but it was the same principle – they lied! They knew they were lying to men and they probably also knew they were lying to the Holy Spirit. While they could have fooled the apostles, they couldn’t fool God. They just thought they could get away with it.

Sin #2: A desire for the praise of men

Not only was their sin in their deception, but they also desired to win the praise of men. The couple noticed that Barnabas was much respected for his generosity and they wanted the same recognition for themselves. Maybe they were even a little bit envious because Peter specifically tells Ananias that Satan had filled his heart.

Are we guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit in church today?

Do Christians today lie to the Holy Spirit? Are we guilty of wanting the praise of men? Do we try to “look the part” on the outside, but our heart is far from it? Consider just a few examples.

Perhaps your church called its members to fast and pray and you agree to it, but then half way through the fast, you break your commitment. Then the next Sunday comes around and someone asks you how you did. You smile and with fingers crossed, you tell them it was great experience and you kept the whole fast. You not only lied to the church members, but you are also guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit.

Or what about when your church holds it’s annual tithe pledge and you pledge to give a certain dollar amount weekly, but don’t give as much as you pledge or don’t give at all. You knew that when you put that amount down that you had no intention of giving that much, but you write it down anyway. You’ve not only lied to the church who builds its budget off the anticipated tithes as indicated by the pledges, you’re also guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit.

Ananais and Sapphira’s Consequences

The Holy Spirit revealed to Peter that Ananias and Sapphira had lied and Peter called them out for it. As soon as Ananias heard Peter say, “You have not lied to men but to God,” Ananias fell down, dead. About three hours later, his wife came in, unknowing what had happened to her husband. Peter asked her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” and she indicated that they had sold it for that price. This confirms the couple conspired together to “dupe” the apostles, making her just as guilty as her husband. When Peter called her out on the lie, she too fell down and died.

We Can’t Fool God

We can slip a hand behind our backs and have our fingers crossed and everyone around us will believe we are Godly people, but we can’t fool God.

Psalm 139 says: “Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up, You understand my thoughts from far away, You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me…Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to heaven, You are there, if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there Your hand will lead me;

God is omniscient. He knows everything. You cannot lie to Him and Him not know it. He even knows the intentions of our heart and what motivates us. There is simply no fooling God.

Sin #3 Hypocrisy

Ananias and Sapphira’s sin was not just lying and seeking the praise of men. There is a third sin involved in their dishonesty. It was also a sin of hypocrisy. They wanted to make the other church members believe they were something they were not. They wanted the church to think they had done something they had no intention of doing. Their actions were intentional deception while pretending to be motivated by the love of God, all for the sake of attempting to promote themselves.

Christians everywhere, in every congregation, commit the same sin Sunday after Sunday. We sing “Here I am to Worship” while checking our watch to see how much longer church will last. Or we sing, “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God” when we truly seek to fill our own desires. We hang wall decorations in our home that say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” when our homes are full of bickering, fighting, and cussing. We sing with our hands lifted high, “I Surrender All,” but in truth, we surrender nothing. Yes. We too are guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit.

Do Christian today lie to the Holy Spirit? We sing “Here I am to Worship” or “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God”, or “I Surrender All when our heart is far from worship, all we seek is our own desires, and we surrender nothing.

How Would Church be Different If we refused to lie to the Holy Spirit?

How would our lives and our churches be different if we refused to sing or pray or worship until we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and reveal the ways we have been lying to Him? Would the way we worship be different? Would anyone open their mouth to sing? Let’s stop worshiping with our mouth while one hand is behind our back with our fingers crossed. Let’s stop lying to the Holy Spirit. Confess the lies you’ve been telling Him and allow him to renew a right spirit within you.

How would our lives, churches, and worship be different if we refused to sing, pray, or worship until we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and reveal the ways we have been lying to Him? Would our worship be different?

Don’t Be A Whitewashed Tomb

A Whitewashed Tomb

What did Jesus mean when he said the scribes and Pharisees were like a whitewashed tomb? Take a moment and think about what you find inside a tomb – not a vacant one – but an inhabited one. A tomb that’s had a long-time resident. Maybe an image from a horror movie you’ve seen came to mind. With that picture in mind, go back read Matthew 23:27-28 again…

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautify on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every impurity. In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Pretty on the outside; Nasty on the inside

In Bible days, people used caves to bury their dead. If Jesus were here today He might would say that on the outside the scribes and Pharisees were like a well-tended grave with beautiful flowers placed weekly but on the inside they were like the rotting, stinking, decaying body found inside the casket. They were hypocrites. They displayed one thing while in reality was something altogether different.

A picture of righteousness on the outside; pride and sin on the inside

Al Capp, an American cartoonist and humorist best known for the satirical comic strip Li’l Abner, once said: “Abstract art is a product of the untalented sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.” The scribes and Pharisees could have been described the same way. They were unprincipled, pious religious leaders forcing rigid legalistic rules on the bewildered people that were never intended by God. They went around in their fancy clothing, praying loudly and openly for all to see how “righteous” they were and yet they didn’t even keep the rigid laws they imposed on everyone else.

Jesus described the scribes and Pharisees as beautiful on the outside, but on the inside they were nothing more than rotting, decaying bones. They painted a good picture of “righteousness” for everyone to see, but their hearts were full of pride and sin. Most of us don’t like people like that, but sometimes we are just as guilty.

God is concerned about what’s on the inside

If we go to church on Sunday and act holy and spiritual, but the rest of week act like the Devil, then we are as much of a hypocrite as the scribes and Pharisees. God isn’t concerned with what other people see on the outside, He interested on what He sees on the inside. He knows what’s really inside and how sincere we are about our worship of Him and our relationship with Him.

In 1 Samuel 16:7, God tells Samuel, “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” We can fool other people, but we can’t fool God. We can dress up in our Sunday finest and play the part, but when we stand before God on judgment day, He will know if our insides are rotting decaying bones or full of the Holy Spirit.

Are you like a whitewashed tomb?

What is the condition of your heart today? Are you like a whitewashed tomb, keeping up appearances or does God see your heart as righteous, cleansed by the blood of Jesus?

Matthew 23:27-28. Don’t Be A Whitewashed Tomb

What is the condition of your heart today? Are you like a whitewashed tomb, keeping up appearances or does God see your heart as righteous, cleansed by the blood of Jesus?

Don’t forget to learn this week’s memory verse:

memory verse logo

Isaiah 55:6-7

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  Our verse last week focused on praying. For the next few weeks, we will be focusing on repentance.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Learn more about hosting this event at your church or conference site by clicking here.

God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars: 365 Daily Challenges to Grow Your Marriage

By Julia M. Bruce / WestBow Press

There’s no doubt that marriage is hard work. Yet it can also be one of the most fulfilling relationships you can experience, outside of your relationship with God. However, many marriages leave God outside of the relationship. Godly marriages do not happen without cultivating it, investing in it, and putting God first in your individual lives and in your marriage.
This book includes 365 daily activities and takes you on a journey through Biblical principles about Godly marriage that you can then apply to your marriage, as well as helping you talk through concepts that can help you develop a solid relationship. Inside you will find simple, quick activities that include:
• Scripture to memorize and meditate on
• Conversation Starters
• Concepts from the Bible on Godly marriages
• Romance Builders
• Relationship Builders
• Personal reflections
• Date ideas
• Group date ideas for you and other Christian couples

What is pallet art?
It is a top trend in wall decor, created of dried-out pine with authentic rustic finish and the look of age and distress. It is the same wood that is used to create shipping pallets, and contains knots and knot holes, rough spots, irregular edging, and a rough, raw natural look- from the heart of America. The roughness and texture behind the artwork gives each piece a unique look of its own.

Pallet art is highly desirable and fits well with Country, primitive decor, contemporary suburban designs, and the open, back-to-nature style that is so appealing. Sawtooth hangers are affixed to the back for easy hanging on the wall.

Create a warm and casual atmosphere with distinctive pallet wall art in every room.
