Prepare the Way

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation for our Savior

What if someone famous that you admired was coming to your house today? What would you do to prepare and get ready? Who would you tell about it? Who would you invite? In Isaiah 40, the prophet Isaiah foretells about John the Baptist who would be the voice crying out, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” Isaiah wrote:

“A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert. Every valley will be lifted up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the uneven ground will become smooth and the rough places, a plain. And the glory of the Lord will appear, and all humanity together will see it,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Prepare the Way of the Lord

Whenever the President visits a city, the local police and the secret service work together to close down road, plot out a path, and create a way for him to reach his destination. In Isaiah’s day, if a king or dignitary was going to visit, the way would have to be prepared. This often meant repairing roads, removing fallen trees or other obstacles, and eliminating all detours so that there would be no barriers to the king’s arrival.

Prepare the way by Removing the obstacles

Isaiah tells us that in a similar way we are to “prepare the way for the LORD.” At Christmas we celebrate the coming of the King, so it’s important to prepare our hearts for his coming by removing the obstacles that stand between us and a right relationship with God. These obstacles can be sins, such as hatred, bitterness, anger, addictions, sexual sins, lies, or any other barrier that stands between you and the Lord. It could be things, hobbies, or people that you have made a higher priority in your life than God. Obstacles can be anything that controls your heart that doesn’t allow God to have control. It can be anything you have not surrendered to Him. And it can be any lack of faith you have for believing God.

Whatever barriers and obstacles you’ve allowed to be in the way prevents you from allowing the Lord to have complete and total Lordship of your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the areas that are obstacles and barriers to your relationship with God and the areas that you have not fully surrendered to Him. Repent and ask the Holy Spirit to help you remove these barriers and open the way for Christ to fully reign and rule in you.

Prepare the way by developing Godly ways

Preparing the way isn’t just removing what is in the way, but its also fixing what’s wrong. We do this by developing Godly ways, habits and practices. We don’t just need to develop them, but we also need to live them out consistently. Without studying, memorizing, and applying God’s instructions to us that we find in His Word, we will not be able to develop Godly ways. Certainly we can learn Godly ways by going to church, but growing in Christ comes from hiding God’s Word in our heart, asking the Holy Spirit to “search me and know my thoughts,” and being doers of the Word.

Prepare the way by living Godly ways

All around us the world watches us. They want to know what is different about us. We can prepare the way for Jesus to come into the heart of someone else by living a life that honors and glorifies God in our words and actions. As we pray for those who are lost or those who have wandered away from God, we prepare a way for for Jesus to enter their lives or draw them back to Him. We can witness to them by telling them what God has done for us or inviting them to church.

Prepare a way to your own heart

Often times, we think we’re doing pretty good as we compare ourselves to the world, but none of us are without sin and God is always working to grow and develop our faith. So we need to make sure we are allowing the Holy Spirit to convict us and clean out the areas of sin so that God has a path to work in our lives the way that desires.

How do you need to prepare a way?

As we make preparation for the Christmas season this year, be brave enough to spend time alone with the Holy Spirit and ask Him how you need to prepare a way for Christ – whether that’s clearing out obstacles, developing Godly habits, living Godly ways, or making a path for God to grow your faith.

Is Christ on the Increase in Your Life?

A Voice in the Wilderness

John the Baptist’s assigned calling, the purpose for his life, was to be the “forerunner” of Jesus. A “forerunner” is a person or thing that precedes the coming or development of someone or something else. But when the new person enters the scene, the forerunner’s influence decreases so that the new person will increase. For John, he was to point people to the Messiah. He prepared the way for Jesus to come onto the scene of history. Had the people paid attention to the prophet Isaiah,  who lived about 700 years before the birth of John and Jesus, they should have been able to recognize John for who he was. Isaiah foretold that John would come before the Messiah. Isaiah 40:3-5 says:

“A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
    and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Matthew 3:3 clearly identifies John as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophesy. “For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’” So if the people had connected the dots and recognized John as the prophesied forerunner for the Messiah, then they should have also recognized Jesus as the Messiah.

John knew his ministry would decrease once Jesus began his ministry

John was six months older than Jesus and he was Jesus’ cousin. Before Jesus began his public ministry, John’s job was to point the people to the coming Messiah. He had been preparing them and baptizing them, calling them to repent of their sins. Once Jesus stepped on the scene, John’s job would decrease while Jesus’ job was increase. However, for a time, their ministries overlapped. Then some of John’s disciples came to him and said that people were going to Jesus to get baptized. John was quick to respond that he was not the Christ and to point people to Jesus as the Christ. Because Jesus is Christ – the Messiah – the people should be going to Him to be baptized. John then said that he must decrease so that Christ would increase.

The more we surrender to Christ the more He increases and we decrease

This same statement is true for us today. As we surrender more and more of our lives to Christ, growing spiritually, we should be decreasing and Christ should increasing. As Christ increases in our lives, the result should be our lives reflecting more and more of Him and less and less of us. If Christ is increasing in our lives, then our old sinful nature should become less noticeable as Christ transforms us into a new person. This means that old habits (such as cursing, lying, drinking, abusing drugs, stealing, adultery, etc.) are put away while new habits (such as attending church, worshiping, singing praise songs, Bible study and prayer) replace the old.

As Jesus increases in our lives then our lives should take more and more shape from Him. His characteristics will become evident in our lives. We will begin to forgive like He forgives and love unconditionally like He loves. We would enjoy spending time in His Word, studying it and applying it to our lives. And we would spend time in prayer, not as a requirement, but as the opportunity to talk to our Savior.

Who is on the increase in your life: You or Christ?

Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Would you say that you are decreasing and Christ is increasing in your life? How has your life changed since you became a Christian so that Jesus is reflected in your life? What areas still need work? Would you confess those to God now and surrender them to Him?

2nd Sunday of Advent: Preparation

2nd Sunday - Prepare Isaiah 40 3-5

During the second week of Advent, the focus is on our preparation. We all have traditions that prepare for the Christmas season. Whatever tradition you have in your family, we all prepare for the holidays by trimming the tree, decorating the home inside and out, there is usually some baking, maybe some caroling.  At church, there is the annual Christmas program. There is the office Christmas party. There is gift buying and wrapping. However, the preparation that we do in Advent is a preparation of our hearts.

Isaiah prophesied about the one that would come before Jesus, preparing the way for the Messiah. John the Baptist was more than the cousin of Jesus. Luke 3:4-6, Luke quotes the verses from Isaiah and identifies John the Baptist as the one Isaiah predicted. John’s ministry was to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to the people of Israel which would prepare the way for Jesus to fulfill His ministry that would bring salvation to us all.

Just as John preached repentance and forgiveness of sins to the people of Israel, his message recorded in the Bible is for us today. We too are called to prepare ourselves and our hearts as we celebrate the birth of our Savior and to prepare for the second coming of Jesus. Just as John called others to Christ, we too can bring the message of repentance and forgiveness to those we know.

Author Ann Voskamp writes:

“We’re ready for Christmas, not when we have all the gifts, but when we are ready for Christ—when we’re ready to give all of ourselves to Christ.”

As you prepare your home for the Christmas season, take time to prepare your heart as well. The first way to do so, is to spend time in God’s Word and study the passages that relate to Christmas. YouVersion provides a free 25-day Advent reading plan to help you focus your heart on Jesus during this season.

If you have young children, you can help them focus their hearts by creating your own Advent calendar that holds treats or treasures inside. The treasures could relate to something about the Christmas story with a slip of paper that references a verse in the Bible. Then each day as your children discover the treasure, read a verse from the Bible about the Christmas story. If part of your Christmas decorations includes a nativity set with separate pieces, you can use the pieces as part of the Bible verses you are reading.

Lastly, as we prepare our hearts for Christmas, look for ways to love others like Christ did. Each week decide as a family something you can do that will demonstrate Christ love. Rich Atkinson identifies “12 Ideas to Show Christ’s Love at Christmas” to help you get started with some ideas.

You can also prepare your heart through Christmas songs that help you focus on Christ. Whether that’s the hymns of old or from some of the more contemporary artist, music is a great way to bring our hearts to worship our Savior. You can spread the message of Christmas through your neighborhood by getting together with family and friends and go caroling together.

Most importantly, the best way to prepare your heart is to spend time in private prayer and worship. Use the Christmas story from Luke 2 as you pray and worship God through each part of the story. However you choose to prepare your heart, be sure to follow John the Baptist’s example and be someone that tells others of the coming of the Messiah.
