The Cornerstone

When a building is being built the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation is called the cornerstone. It is the most important stone of the entire construction because once it was set, the rest of the building would conform to the angles and size of the cornerstone. This principle cornerstone was placed at the corner of the edifice and was usually one of the largest, most solid, and most carefully constructed stones for the whole building. If one were to remove this stone from the construction, the entire building would collapse. Because of the importance of this stone, if it was not just right the builder would reject it.

Jesus is our cornerstone

In Luke 20:17, Jesus was quoting from Psalm 118:22 and He identified Himself as the Cornerstone on which His church would be built. The prophet, Isaiah foretold this about Jesus. In Isaiah 28:16, Isaiah said: “So this is what the sovereign Lord says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.’”

For Christians and the Church, Christ is the Cornerstone who provides the firm foundation for our lives. However, for those who do not believe and place their trust in Him, they are like the Pharisees who rejected Him. In Acts 4:11, Peter uses this same passage from Luke 20:17 to condemn the Jewish religious leaders. Peter said, “This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.” The religious leaders should have been the ones building the church. But they chose to reject Jesus as the Messiah. By doing so, and discarding Him as the cornerstone, their lives collapsed around them just as a building would if the cornerstone was removed from the structure.

If Jesus is our cornerstone, we have a firm foundation

The same is true for us today. We each must choose either a firm foundation with Christ as the cornerstone, or to reject Him. In Isaiah 8:14-15, the prophet describes Jesus as a sanctuary for those who trust in him but a stumbling block to those who reject Him as the foundation for their life.  There are three things we can learn about Jesus being the cornerstone of our lives:

If Jesus is our Cornerstone, then we take our shape from Him.

1 John 2:6 says, “Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked. If Jesus is the true cornerstone of your life than everything else in your life will take its shape from Him. Your words and actions would be like Him. The places you go would be places Jesus would go. Your eyes would only look at things Jesus would look at. Your attitudes would mirror His. And your heart would be like His: humble, servant, kind, generous, merciful, forgiving.

Ephesians 5:1 says that we should be imitators of Christ. If He is the cornerstone of our lives, then everything about Christ should bubble up from our foundation and reflect Christ in every part of our lives.

If Jesus is our Cornerstone, then we take our instructions from Him.

Luke 6:46 says, “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?” If we profess Jesus as Lord, then the logical thing to do is to obey His commandments and do what He tells us to do.

John 14:15 says, ““If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” A solider demonstrates his loyalty and faithfulness to his commanding officer and his platoon by following the orders of the officer. To do so, he must also trust his commanding officer as well as the other soldiers in his platoon. As a Christian, we demonstrate our love and trust in Christ, as well as our loyalty and faithfulness, by obeying God’s commandments and doing His will for our lives.

If Jesus is our cornerstone, then we can take shelter in Him.

If Jesus is our cornerstone, then we have a sure foundation for when the storms of life come. Jesus put it this way in Luke 6:46-49: “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say? I will show you what someone is like who comes to Me, hears My words, and acts on them: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great!”

As we are in a worldwide pandemic, those who have their firm foundation built on the solid rock of Christ can live without fear and panic. But if our faith is as fragile as sinking sand, then a pandemic becomes panic and one lives with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. How you feel in these days could be a clue to whether your faith is built on the solid rock or sinking sand.

Is your eternal life built on the Cornerstone of Christ?

If you examine your own life, what have your built your eternal life on? Is Christ the cornerstone that lays a firm foundation? Are you more like the house on the rock or the house on the sand? Does the shape of your life mirror the shape of Christ? Are you following His instructions? Do you take shelter in Him when the storms of life come, trusting Him to be a firm and sure cornerstone?

Jesus, thank you for showing us how we should live and defining the shape that honors and glorifies you. Thank you for giving us instructing us in the way we should go. Thank you for providing a shelter to which we can run – even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic.

John 8:42. Do you love Jesus?

Can you, for a moment, think about a memorable occasion when someone did something sacrificially nice for you for no other reason than because they care about you and expected nothing in return? How did that make you feel about the person? Did it make them more dear to you?

We’ve all known people who profess to be a Christian, but they live like the world. Whether they truly are a child of God or not, is between them and God. However, in John 8:42, Jesus said that if God is our Father, then we would love Jesus. In John 14:15, Jesus said that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. Because we are sinful, willful humans, there will be times that we sin, but our lifestyle should not be one of sin. The world should be able to see the light of Jesus in us. If we look more like the world in how we live, then we might need to double check who our spiritual father is – God, or Satan.

It is very difficult to both fully understand just how sinful we are and what that sin cost Jesus and not truly love Him. What He endured before and on the cross was because of my sin – and yours. He didn’t have to go to the cross. He could have called all the angels of heaven and they would have come to his defense instantly. It was His love for you and me and that held him there. In fact, it bothers me to see movies that portray Christ’s crucifixion or pictures of him on the cross because I know He had to go through that because of me. I matter so much to Him that He willingly chose the path that led to the cross so that I could become a child of God. Just as the person you thought about earlier became more dear to you because of their thoughtful actions towards you, Jesus should become more dear to us as we realize just what He did for us. How could we not love Him when He gave His own life for us?

What about you? Do you love Jesus?

God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars: 365 Daily Challenges to Grow Your Marriage
By Julia M. Bruce / WestBow Press
There’s no doubt that marriage is hard work. Yet it can also be one of the most fulfilling relationships you can experience, outside of your relationship with God. However, many marriages leave God outside of the relationship. Godly marriages do not happen without cultivating it, investing in it, and putting God first in your individual lives and in your marriage.
This book includes 365 daily activities and takes you on a journey through Biblical principles about Godly marriage that you can then apply to your marriage, as well as helping you talk through concepts that can help you develop a solid relationship. Inside you will find simple, quick activities that include:

• Scripture to memorize and meditate on
• Conversation Starters
• Concepts from the Bible on Godly marriages
• Romance Builders
• Relationship Builders
• Personal reflections
• Date ideas
• Group date ideas for you and other Christian couples

We’re booking for church and ministry events. (Due to COVID-19, we are only tentatively booking for events after September 2020 based on the recommendations as issued by the CDC and our government officials.)

004

Julia Bruce is an engaging speaker, CEO of Wellspring Christian Ministries, and author of God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars. This book is for Christian couples who seek a closer relationship with each other and with God. With 365 activities, couples intentionally grow their relationship. The activities include scripture memory, conversation starters, personal reflections, guided Bible studies, romance builders, relationship builders and date night ideas.

The God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars Event:

The contents of the book started out as daily posts on Wellspring’s website to encourage couples to develop Godly marriages. However, they quickly became the most viewed pages of the site. God then led her to organize the collection of posts into a book format that couples would be able to work through year after year. She enjoys going to churches and ministry events to talk about how the activities in the book will develop stronger marriages that are centered in Christ, which will then create stronger families. The GLMW event is a fun and interactive event for couples where participants experience some of the activities in book as part of the event. For more information about the GLMW event, complete the form below.

Coming Soon:

Currently, Julia is finishing her second book, entitled: Help! No one said ministry was about spiritual battles and difficult people! In this book Julia uses her studies in psychology and professional counseling to take a Biblical approach to self-care to help people serving in the ministry not burn-out, give-up, and walk away from the call God placed on their lives. Whether your ministry position is volunteer or the senior pastor, this book will help you recognize the areas in your life that are depleted and need a little TLC so you can keep doing what God has called you to. You’re assignment in the Kingdom of God is vitally important!

Keep an eye out for this book when it is released and see how Biblical self-care can keep you serving God. Julia can bring these concepts to your next ministry staff retreat to help your ministry team refill, recharge, and renew their heart for their area of ministry.

What is Wellspring Christian Ministries?

After years of envisioning the idea and concept of Wellspring Christian Ministries, Julia decided to take a leap of faith and merge her vocational, collegiate, and life experiences and make the dream God put on her heart a reality.  We are a non-profit organization with a vision of partnering with churches to equip them to revive, renew, and redeem the ministry of the church so that our nation will experience an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Today we reach people world-wide through blog posts, speaking events, and devotionals. John 8:42. Do You Love Jesus

May 23 John 8 42 NKJV

Can you, for a moment, think about a memorable occasion when someone did something sacrificially nice for you for no other reason than because they care about you and expected nothing in return? How did that make you feel about the person? Did it make them more dear to you?

We’ve all known people who profess to be a Christian, but they live like the world. Whether they truly are a child of God or not, is between them and God. But in John 8:42,  Jesus said that if God is our Father, then we would love Jesus. In John 14:15, Jesus said that we love Him, we will keep His commandments. Because we are sinful humans, there will times that we sin, but our lifestyle should not be one of sin. The world should be able to see the light of Jesus in us. If we look more like the world in how we live, then we might need to double check who our spiritual father is – God, or Satan.

If very difficult to both fully understand just how sinful we are and what that sin cost Jesus and not truly love Him. What He endured before and on the cross was because of my sin. He didn’t have to go to the cross. He could have called all the angels of heaven and they would have come to his defense. It was His love for me that held him there. In fact, it bothers me to see movies that portray Christ’s crucifixion or pictures of him on the cross because I know he had to go through that because of me. I matter so much to Him that He willingly chose the path that led to the cross so that I could become a child of God. Just as the person you thought about earlier became more dear to you because of their thoughtful actions, Jesus should become more dear to us as we realize just what He did for us. How could we not love Him when He gave His own life for us? What about you – do you love Jesus?

Julia is CEO of Wellspring Christian Ministries, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people and couples develop a passionate relationship with God. A public speaker, conference trainer, event planner, and blog writer, Julia is a two-time graduate from Grand Canyon University with a bachelor in Psychology and a masters in Professional Counseling. Saved as a child and raised in church and in a Christian home and private Christian School as a Pastor’s kid, Julia has taught Sunday school, led music, played the piano, served as Children’s Director, and engaged her gifts in many other areas of church life. Julia enjoys sharing her journey as a growing Christian with others looking for a deeper connection with God. Through Bible study and her own life experiences, God has given Julia a passion to help couples understand God’s design for marriage while they learn to place God first in their marriage, cultivate meaningful relationships, build intimacy, and address the tougher issues that come in every marriage so that they can experience a marriage that honors and glorifies God. Julia also loves mentoring, teaching, and working with women to help them learn to live as Godly women.

With her history and experience growing up in both small and large churches, Julia enjoys bringing top level quality events to churches of all sizes. Her father largely pastored small churches and therefore she understands that these vital parts of the believing community need to be good stewards of the resources God provides them with. This knowledge inspires her passion for being available with a fresh perspective for those who want to provide their congregations with meaningful spiritual growth opportunities.
