Destination: The Well

The story about the Woman at the Well is one of my favorites. Imagine with me for a moment….

It’s in the middle of the day…the hottest part of the day…and a lone woman lifts a clay jar and sets it on her shoulder and heads for the well to draw water. The time of day is important because usually the women came in the early morning, when it was cooler. Also, all the women in a village would go to the well together; laughing, telling stories, catching up with each other, gaining advice and wisdom from older women. But not this woman. She was the outcast in the village and she avoided the other women. Perhaps they turned their nose up at her or maybe they called her names. Her life was different than theirs and she didn’t fit in. But her life is about to change!

A Devine Appointment at a Well

Not too far off a group of men were on their way to Galilee and their leader says, “I must go through Samaria.” The twelve men with him all suddenly stop and look at each other. “Master, through Samaria? Are you sure?”

May 12 ctt

You see, the Jews had nothing to do with the Samaritans. Long-standing religious differences created racial divides to the degree that the Jews would consider themselves unclean if they associated with a Samaritan. The disciples could not understand why Jesus wanted to go through Samaria. But look again at the verse in John 4:4. It wasn’t that it was a quicker route or one easier to travel. He had to go. Why? Because he had a divine appointment with an outcast woman on her way to the well to draw water and he was going to give her living water that never runs dry.

Jesus has a divine appointment with you

Is your life feeling a little dirty or dry? Thirsty? Maybe your life is being talked about to the degree that you want to avoid other people. If so, Jesus has a divine appointment with you right now as you are reading. For just a few moments, can I take your hand and lead you to the well that never runs dry?

Maybe you have already given your life to Christ, but you’re still feeling dry and thirsty. If so, can you honestly say you love Him with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all our mind (Luke 10:27)? The Bible also says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34). When we treasure something (or someone), we spend time with it, we show it off, we talk about it, we post pictures on Facebook, we tweet about it, our face lights up when the person walks in the room.

How much time are you spending with God? Just enough to grant you fire insurance to save you from the pit of hell? Where are your priorities? What do you spend the majority of your time doing? This will give you a good indication of where your treasure and your heart is. If you are already a Christian, and still feeling dry then perhaps you need to come back to the well and recommit your life to Christ and begin growing an intimate relationship with Him.

See the Unfailing Love of Christ at the Well

If you have not ever had that moment of discovering Christ’s love for you, then let’s look back at the woman at the well and see the unfailing love of Christ.

As the woman approaches the well, Jesus had already sent his disciples into town to buy food and he says to the woman, “Give Me a drink.” Remember the animosity between Jews and Samaritans? His request must have startled her and she replied, “How is it that You, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” In his human body, Jesus probably was thirsty after walking from Judea to Samaria. However, his reply was “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.”

Can you see the confusion on her face? She looked at his empty hands, then down at the ground, and on the ledge of the well and said, “Sir, you don’t even have a bucket and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?

At a Well without a Bucket

Am I the only one that notices she doesn’t get hung up on the idea of “living water” and she is only concerned that he doesn’t have a bucket? Regardless, Jesus used the reason she had come to the well to draw her towards belief in Him. In verse 13-14, Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever! In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up within him for eternal life.”

She still doesn’t get it. In her mind she must have thought, “Wow…if I never get thirsty again, I will never have to come to this well again and lug this heavy pot of water back home. I will never have to come here in the heat of the day to avoid the other women.” Listen to her reply in verse 15. “Sir, give me this water so I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”

Confronted at the Well

Jesus then goes to the deepest shame in her life. He says to her: “Go call your husband, and come back here.”

 “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said.  “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”

So here is a man, a Jew, whom she never met before and he knows about her past husbands and that she is living with a man to whom she is not married. Isn’t this the reason she came to the well in the heat of the day? To avoid these accusations? The Bible doesn’t tell us what happened to the five husbands, but maybe after being married five times she felt like, “What’s the point? I’ll just live with a man.” In our world today, there isn’t much thought given to men and women living together outside of marriage, but in Bible times, it was not acceptable.

Changing the subject

So again, imagine her astonishment and her hurt that her messy life is so well known that a stranger just stopping at the well for a drink of water knows all her business. She tries to change the subject and surmises that he must be a prophet to know so much about her. She says: “Sir, I see that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”

How often are we like this woman and want to change the conversation when our faults are being set out for display? Jesus addresses this religious debate but also uses it to get to the point. Jesus told her, “Believe Me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.  You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

She must have still been confused or else just didn’t like his answer because she answered him saying, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”

I Am He

He gets to the whole reason he was here….to introduce her to himself. He says, “I am He, the One speaking to you.”

Her response was to drop her water pot and run back to the village and say, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?” As a result the entire town came to meet Jesus…and because of her story, this unnamed woman is still brining people to Jesus today.

You see, Jesus cared for this one Samaritan woman enough to go to the “taboo” Samaria and meet her at the well. He introduced her to himself so that she could, would, and does have living water which is eternal life that we have once we place our faith and trust in Him. Where can Jesus meet you at today so He can offer you living water, and will you accept?

Jesus sought out the Woman at the Well and He seeks you too

May 12 ctt2

Yes, this is one of my favorite stories in all the Bible…because even knowing ALL the sins of this woman, Jesus still sought her out…and even knowing all my sins he sought me out. He still went to the cross. He still spent three days in a borrowed tomb. Jesus still rose from the grave. He still conquered death, sin, and the grave. And he loved the woman at the well enough that he would have done it even if she had been the only sinner on earth.

Just as he would have if I were the only sinner on earth. And just as he would have if you were the only sinner on earth. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord…is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” My sweet friend, the good news is that you (no matter your sins) are included in that word “all.”

Come to the well of Living Water

Come to the well. Jesus is waiting for you. Are you ready to drink from His living water? There are no magic words to use, just three basic steps:

  1. Admit that you are sinner. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” None of us could ever live a perfect life or do anything to “earn” eternal life. The good news is that Jesus has already done the work for us through his life, death, and resurrection. The only thing we have to do is…
  2. Believe. We must believe Jesus is the sinless, only son of God who was born of a virgin and as such, he is both fully 100% God and 100% man. As a man he was tempted just as you and I are, but he never sinned. Because he was sinless he was the sacrifice that shed His blood in our place when he was beaten and nailed to a cross. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Wages…its what we earn. Our sins have earned us death. But, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) He willingly laid down His life in our place, taking our wages upon Himself, so that we could have eternal life….even knowing all our sins. All you have to do to accept his free (unearned, unmerited) gift is to reach out and take it by….
  3. Confessing. I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Confession is simply acknowledging what God already knows to be true.

Prayer of Salvation

If you are ready, you can pray this prayer, or one similar on your own.

Lord, I admit that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that you are the only son of God who came to earth as both God and man, lived a sinless life and offered your life as payment for my sins and that you died, was buried, and rose on the 3rd day and are now seated on the throne in Heaven. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my life as my Lord and Savior. Thank you for meeting me and giving me living water that never runs dry. Thank you for loving me and showing all the things I have done and introducing yourself to me. Help me to grow in you and learn to serve you.

If you prayed that prayer, your next step is to find a local evangelical church to join and talk with the pastor about being baptized.

Julia Bruce is an engaging speaker, CEO of Wellspring Christian Ministries, and author of God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars. Julia’s book is for Christian couples who seek a closer relationship with each other and with God. The book contains 365 activities for couples to work through together for a year of intentionally growing their relationship. The activities include scripture memory, conversation starters, personal reflections, guided Bible studies, romance builders, relationship builders and date night ideas. The book started out as daily posts on Wellspring’s website to encourage couples to develop Godly marriages and they quickly became the most viewed pages of the site. Julia feels God led her to organize the collection of posts into a book format that couples would be able to work through year after year. She enjoys going to churches and ministry events to talk about how the activities in the book will develop stronger marriages that are centered in Christ, which will then create stronger families.

Currently, Julia is finishing her second book, entitled: Help! No one said ministry was about spiritual battles and difficult people! In this book Julia uses her studies in psychology and professional counseling to take a Biblical approach to self-care to help people serving in the ministry not burn-out, give-up, and walk away from the call God placed on their lives. Whether your ministry position is volunteer or the senior pastor, this book will help you recognize the areas in your life that are depleted and need a little TLC so you can keep doing what God has called you to. You’re assignment in the Kingdom of God is vitally important! Keep an eye out for this book when it is released and see how Biblical self-care can keep you serving God. Julia can bring these concepts to your next ministry staff retreat to help your ministry team refill, recharge, and renew their heart for their area of ministry.

After years of envisioning the idea and concept of Wellspring Christian Ministries, Julia decided to take a leap of faith and merge her vocational, collegiate, and life experiences and make the dream God put on her heart a reality.  Today we reach people world-wide through blog posts, speaking events, and devotionals. With a strong burden for our nation, Julia has a passion to see a revival sweep across our land and many of her writings and speaking events have a theme of calling God’s people to humble themselves and pray, and seek God’s face as they repent of sin and tune their hearts to following God’s will and His commandments.

Her message will engage individuals, inspire teams and transform the heart that is prayerfully seeking to live a God-first life. As the Holy Spirit speaks through her messages, He will work in every willing heart to create a life that is wholly sold out to God.

Psalm 1:3 Planted by the rivers of water

Jul 10 Psalm 1 3

The man that the psalmist describes as being planted by the river and bringing for fruit is the righteous man that does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the paths of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful (vs1). Instead, this person’s delight is found in knowing and doing the will the God and obeying His commands. He is the man that meditates on God’s Word day and night. (vs2). The psalmist says there are four results of this type of person.

Result 1: This person is like a tree planted by a river of water. When a tree is planted near water, its roots go deep into the ground providing nutrients and water to make a healthy tree. Jesus said in John 4:14, “Whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again – ever! In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up within him for eternal life.” In Revelation 22:1, John wrote, “Then the angel showed me the river of water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” As Christians, we drink from the river of life every time we study God’s Word and apply it to our lives so that our roots become firmly planted in the truths of God’s Word.

Christians drink from the river of life every time we study God’s word and apply it to our lives so that our roots become firmly planted in the truths of God’s Word. — click to tweet

Result 2: This righteous person brings for fruit. There are two kinds of fruit that the Christian should be producing. The first is the fruit that Holy Spirit produces within the believer. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We should be cultivating and growing these fruits as we grow in our relationship with God and He works in our lives to transform us into His image.

The second kind of fruit a Christian should be producing is making disciples. Jesus commanded us to go into all the world and make disciples. (Matthew 28:19-20) The lost people in the world who are dying without Jesus are waiting for someone to tell them about Jesus. If that someone is you and you choose not to tell them, they could spend eternity in hell. Who can you tell about Jesus today?

There are two kinds of fruit a Christian should be producing: the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) and making new disciples (Matt 28:19-20). — click to tweet

Result 3: This righteous person’s leaf does not whither. Our leaves of faith can be whithered in two ways. First, when difficult times come in life and we begin to question our faith or God and we fail to trust Him. Second, our leaves of faith become whithered when we lose our zeal for God and our eagerness to serve Him. But if we are firmly planted by the river of life, the leaves of our faith will not whither because we are deeply rooted into Jesus. In John 15:5, Jesus says that He is the vine and we (Christians) are the branches. The vine is what delivers life-giving nutrients and water to the branches. If we remove ourselves from the vine, then we will whither away. But if we remain in Him, we will produce much fruit.

Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches. The vine is what delivers life-given nutrients and water to the branches. If we remove ourselves from the vine, we will whither away. But if we remain in Him, we will produce much fruit. — click to tweet

Result 4: This righteous person will prosper in whatever He does. This does not mean that we will be rich, wealthy, or famous. It means that if we are well grafted to the vine and being fed and nurtured by the vine, then we will know what His will is and as we are obedient to God and allow Him to do His work in His time, we can’t help but be prosperous in God’s intended will for us. In Isaiah 46:10 God says, “My plan will take place, and I will do all My will.”

When we are well grafted to the vine and being fed and nurtured by the vine, we will know His will. When we are obedient to His will, we can’t help but be prosperous in God’s plan for us because His plan will take place and He will do His will (Is 46:10). — click to tweet

In order to be the righteous person that the psalmist described, we must be drinking from the living water of Christ, producing fruit, grafted into the vine so we do not whither, and then we will prosper as we live obediently to God’s Word and God’s plan for our lives. We do this as we meditate day and night on God’s Word and spend time praying. We do this through worshiping with a community of believers in our local church and being actively involved in a small group Bible study. This is how our spiritual roots grow deep and how we grow spiritually.

1 Chronicles 28:9 – Are you searching for God?

May 30 1 Chronicles 28 9.png

As the book of 1 Chronicles closes out, David is at the end of his reign and he will pass the throne to his son, Solomon. David calls an assembly of the people together and before them all David has some last words of wisdom to give to Solomon. First, he encourages Solomon to have a single-minded devotion to God because nothing less matters since God knows our every intention and our every thought. God knows what motivates us. He knows when what we do is for appearances or when it is heart-felt service to Him.

David also wanted to remind Solomon that God can always be found – if we search for Him. Deuteronomy 4:29 says, that we will find God if we search for him with all our heart and all our soul. Proverbs 8:17 says that those who diligently seek God will find Him. David knew from his own experience what it meant to search for God. In Psalm 63:1 he says, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

If you are searching for God, then what is your motivation? Do you really want to find Him and have a relationship with Him or is God more of a “genie in a bottle” that you can use to further your own plans and agenda? Seeking God is about developing an intimate relationship with Him, not just to get what you want when you want it. Does your soul thirst for God – to point of feeling faint? Does your relationship to God feel parched as in a dry, weary land where there is no water? When talking to the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus said that He was the living water. He told her, “But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever! In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up within him for eternal life.” (John 4:14) If your soul is feeling parched, come to the well where Jesus offers living water and take a drink by asking Him to forgive you of your sins and invite Him into your heart and life as your Lord and Savior.

In 1 Chronicles 29 David has already given Solomon his plans for building a temple to house the Ark. David tells the assembly of people about the gold and silver that he is giving from his own personal treasury to go to the construction of the temple. He then invites the people to give of their own choice as well. He says to the crowd in verse 5, “Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?” To consecrate simple means to “set apart.” If you are searching for God, this same question can apply to you – Are you willing to consecrate yourself to God? Are you willing to set yourself apart from the rest of the world and live obediently for God? If your answer is yes, tell Him. Call on His name and when you search for Him with all your heart and your motivation to find Him is to have a personal relationship with Him, then you will find Him.

Lastly, if you are searching for God, then where are you searching? God can reveal Himself to us in many different ways, such as the words of a song, something the pastor says in his message, or the encouraging word from a friend. However, God is most often found through reading the Bible and spending time in prayer, talking with Him. If you are not spending time in personal Bible study and prayer, then searching for God needs to begin here. As you open your Bible, take a moment and ask God to speak to you through what you read and to reveal Himself to you. When a certain verse seems to stand out or leap off the page to you – highlight that verse and take some time to meditate on it. Ask God what He might be trying to say to you through it. If you apply that verse to you life right now, how might that look?

If you are searching God, check your motivations and intentions, search with all your heart, develop a single-minded devotion to God, consecrate yourself to Him, and commit to daily fellowship with Him through Bible study and prayer. He wants to be found.

John 4:14. A Destined Meeting at the Well

wellspring john 4-14

Not too far off a group of men were on their way to Galilee and their leader says, “I must go through Samaria.” The twelve men with him all suddenly stop and look at each other. “Master, through Samaria? Are you sure?”

Jesus had to go through Samaria. Why? Because he had a divine appointment with an outcast woman on her way to the well to draw water and He was going to give her living water. –click to tweet

She looked at his hands, on the ground, the ledge of the well and said, “Sir, you don’t even have a bucket and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?

The Bible doesn’t tell us what happened to the five husbands, but maybe after be married five times she felt like, “What’s the point? I’ll just live with a man.” In our world today, there isn’t much thought given to men and women living together outside of marriage, but in Bible times, it was not acceptable.

Yes, this is one of my favorite stories in all the Bible…because even knowing ALL the sins of this woman, Jesus still sought her out…and even knowing all my sins he sought me out. He still went to the cross. He still spent three days in a borrowed tomb. He still rose from the grave.

Even knowing ALL the sins of the woman at the well, all my sins, all your sins, Jesus still sought her out…He sought me out….and He sought you out. Come to the well. Jesus is waiting for you. –click to tweet

Come to the well. Jesus is waiting for you. Are you ready to drink from His living water? If so, the prayer below is guide. There are no magic words to use just three basic steps:

  1. Admit that you are sinner. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” None of us are exempt. None of us could ever live a perfect life or do anything to “earn” our way into heaven and eternal life. The good news is that Jesus has already done the work for us through his life, death, and resurrection. The only thing we have to do is…
  2. Believe. We must believe that Jesus is the sinless, only son of God who was born of a virgin and as such, he is both fully 100% God and 100% man.

A public speaker, conference trainer, event planner, and blog writer, Julia is a two-time graduate from Grand Canyon University with a bachelor in Psychology and a masters in Professional Counseling. Saved as a child and raised in church and in a Christian home and private Christian School as a Pastor’s kid, Julia has taught Sunday school, led music, played the piano, served as Children’s Director, and engaged her gifts in many other areas of church life. Previously employed with the Florida Baptist Convention, Julia organized events and led conferences for church ministry assistants.

Julia enjoys sharing her journey as a growing Christian with others looking for a deeper connection with God. Through Bible study and her own life experiences, God has given Julia a passion to help couples understand God’s design for marriage while they learn to place God first in their marriage, cultivate meaningful relationships, build intimacy, and address the tougher issues that come in every marriage so that they can experience a marriage that honors and glorifies God. Julia also loves mentoring, teaching, and working with women to help them learn to live as Godly women.

With her history and experience growing up in both small and large churches, Julia enjoys bringing top level quality events to churches of all sizes. Her father largely pastored small churches and therefore she understands that these vital parts of the believing community need to be good stewards of the resources God provides them with. This knowledge inspires her passion for being available with a fresh perspective for those who want to provide their congregations with meaningful spiritual growth opportunities.
