The Bread of Life

What are the things in your life that make you feel completely satisfied? Maybe a career, or family, or children, a nice stock portfolio or a hefty bank account. Maybe its what brings fun in your life, like a hobby or sport. Or maybe its when you get a chance to get away for awhile and just rest and relax. We can find satisfaction in many ways, but all of these ways are temporal. We try to fill our lives with them to feel satisfied, but until we feast on the Bread of Life, we will still have some part of us that feels empty and hungry.

Is it possible to be fully satisfied?

In our careers, we all find a bad day here or there or the company could go bankrupt and that satisfying career could be instantly gone. Friends, family, children are all just as imperfectly human as we are and they can let us down, disappoint us, and hurt us. Financial satisfaction can be gone instantly with a stock market crash or a major medical issue. Hobbies are great but they can also be frustrating when the fish don’t bite or the new crochet stitch doesn’t look just like the one on the YouTube video.

Sports are just as fickle as everything else. Your team did great last year and went to the play offs and this year they play like elementary kids learning the sport or maybe it’s just the bad calls of the referees. Rest and relaxation is vital to our mental health and physical health, but it must come to an end and we have to join the “real world” again. Is it possible to have true, full satisfaction in this life? Yes! But only when we fill up with the Bread of Life

How is Jesus the “Bread of Life”?

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” To fully understand what Jesus was saying, you’d have to know a little bit about the culture of that day. Bread was one of the main staples in the people’s diet. It was what would “fill them up.” The things in this world that bring temporary satisfaction is like bread that we eat – it fills us up for a time, but we get  hungry again. Jesus is what brings us eternal satisfaction so that we are never spiritually hungry again. Sometimes, we chase after one thing and then another, looking for what brings us satisfaction, but we will never find it, except in a relationships with Jesus. But as long as Satan can make us think that we’ll find it in something in this life, we won’t be chasing after Jesus.

When we feel spiritually empty, we need to fill up on the Bread of Life

Just as physical hunger tells us that we need food, spiritual hunger tells us we need the bread of life. When we experience times of spiritual hunger, God is calling us to His table to “fill up” on spiritual truths found in His Word. Bible study and prayer is the way that we “fill up” spiritually. We all have certain foods that we crave. For my daughter, it’s chocolate. For me – well, it depends on my mood. Sometimes its something salty and sometimes its something sweet. But pizza is one of my favorite foods. I have known people who crave bread. What if we craved the Bread of Life like we crave our favorite food? How would our lives be different? How would our world be different?
