Each week we post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s memory verse:

Luke 2:10-11

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. 

 

Meditate and apply:

1. Take a moment and imagine yourself as one of shepherds on the night the Jesus was born and an angel suddenly appeared. Hear to bleating of the sheep in quiet darkness of night. See the stars twinkling. Feel the night breeze across your skin. All is calm in the silence of the night. But then in an instant, night gives way to a bright, shining angel and what does the angel say, “Fear not!” I don’t know about you, but that would be like telling the tide to stop. Thankfully, the angel has good news so you can breathe again.
2. The good news that will bring great joy is that the long awaited Messiah had arrived. If you’re a Jew and an angel just told you that, how would you respond?
3. The wording in the King James seem rather “matter of fact.” The shepherds discuss it together and said, “Let us now go even until Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” The only sense of excitement or urgency is found in the next two verses that tell use they went with haste and after they had seen the baby in the manger, they told everyone they saw. The Jews had been waiting for God’s promised Messiah for thousands of years. I picture the shepherds leaving the sheep in the pasture, hiking up their long robs and running all the way to Bethlehem – just as excited and anxious as a child on Christmas morning.
4. Today, the angel’s message stills says, “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” ALL. That includes you. The message of the angel wasn’t just for the Jews. It’s for all of us. The Baby in the manger came for you. How will you respond to the message of the angel?

Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Micah 6:8

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? 

Meditate and apply:

1. God doesn’t leave it for us to guess what He expects of us.  The entire Bible is an instruction book for how God expects us to live. He tells us what is good and what He requires of us. When Israel started questioning God about what kind of sacrifices would please God, God’s response is, “You should already know this. I’ve already told you way back then as I brought you out of Egypt and met with you at the mountain and gave Moses the law.” But then He summed it up by saying He sought Israel’s justice, mercy, and humility. They didn’t need more sacrifices. They needed a change of heart. Without the heart being changed, Israel’s could follow the Law exactly, but it would be nothing more than hypocrisy. The same is true for us. We can go to church, read out Bible, give a tithe, sing in the choir, serve in the parking lot, or clean the church toilets, but if our heart has never experienced change from a black, dirty, sinful heart to being washed in the blood of Jesus and made as white as snow, then everything we do is hypocrisy.
2. We are to act justly. This means to live with a sense of right and wrong according to God’s standards – not man’s. Where God is concerned, there are no “gray areas.” Man also doesn’t get to change the rules along the way because they don’t like God’s laws and they don’t want to have to feel guilty for living against God’s law. There is also a social context to acting justly. The judicial courts in Micah’s days were responsible for protecting the innocent, but there was much injustice going on. We still need to protect the innocent and act justly.
3. We are to love mercy. The Hebrew word hesed means “loyal love” or “loving-kindness. We need to act justly, but justice should also be tempered with mercy. Justice and mercy are two foundational characteristics of who God is. (Psalm 89:14). Because God is loyal in His love for us, so we should demonstration loving-kindness to others and we should be loyal in our love towards God.
4. To “walk humbly” describes an attitude of the heart towards God. We depend on Him and not ourselves. We should bring anything pridefully before God but to come to Him with a heart that is committed to justice and love. When we love God as we should, then it is evident outwardly towards others as we seek and do justice, inwardly as we love mercy, and God-ward when we walk humbly before Him.
5. In which of these areas is the Holy Spirit saying, “Hey, we need to work on that?” Take time to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you about acting justly, seeking mercy, and walking humbly.
