Son of David or Son of God

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were constantly trying to trap Jesus in an effort to discredit Him and His teachings. They would pose difficult theological questions to which they hoped He would not either not be able to answer or that He would commit blasphemy with His answer and the people would no longer follow Him. However, in Luke 20:41-44, Jesus posed His own difficult theological question: “How could the Messiah be both the son of David and David’s divine Lord?” In other words, is the long-awaited Messiah the Son of David, or the Son of God…or both?

Attempting to trap the Son of God

Just prior to Luke 20:41-44, the Sadducees were asking Him about marriage in the afterlife. First, you need to understand that the Sadducees didn’t believe in the resurrection from the dead because they did not see it in what was their “Bible” of that day. The Torah consisted only of Genesis through Deuteronomy. Based on Deuteronomy 25:5, they believed in the law of levirate marriage which said that if a husband died and left no offspring, his brother would marry his wife and give her child in his name. So the Sadducees posed a question that if there were seven brothers and they all married the same woman (based on this levirate marriage law), then whose wife would she be in the resurrection?

Jesus answered their question, saying that those who attain the resurrection from the dead are not given in marriage, nor do they die anymore. They also are equal to angels and are sons of God. The Sadducees mistakenly assumed that life after the resurrection of the body would include the same basic structures as earthly life. After this encounter, they stopped baiting Jesus into a theological duel, because they only ended up looking foolish to the people rather than discrediting Jesus.

A Question from the Son of God

The Sadducees may have stopped baiting Jesus, but Jesus gives poses a question of his own to them: “How could the Messiah be both the son of David and David’s divine Lord?” The Bible does not provide an answer from the religious leaders and Jesus left the question open. The only possible answer is that Jesus, the Messiah, was both fully God, making Him Lord, and fully human, a descendant or son of David. For the religious leaders to provide this answer would mean that they would have to acknowledge that Jesus is who He said He is – the Messiah.

What the OT Scriptures say about the Son of David being the Son of God

  • 2 Samuel 7:16 tells us of the promise God made to David: “your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.”
  • In Isaiah 11:1, the prophet foretold: “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.” Jesse is David’s father.
  • Jeremiah writes: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness’” (Jeremiah 23:5–6).

The New Testament shows us that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies that the Son of David is the Son of God

  • The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. (Matthew 1:1)
  • He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. (Luke 1:32–33)
  • Matthew and Luke provide genealogies tracing Jesus back to David.
  • Jesus encountered several people who called Him “Son of David, such as Bartimaeus, the blind beggar sitting near the road in Mark 10:47-52.
  • James quotes from the book of Acts (Acts 15:15-16) and implies Jesus as David’s descendant: “With this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written, ‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins and I will restore it.'”  The “tent of David” refers to the lineage of David through the coming Messiah.

No Room to Doubt the Son of God

The Bible leaves no room to wonder if Jesus is the fulfillment of the 2 Samuel promise to David. Because Jesus was a born from the lineage of David, He was by earthly standards the “Son of David.” But the only way possible for David to call Jesus “Lord” when Jesus would not be born for another 42 generations later is that Jesus also has to be the eternal Son of God – the Messiah the Jews had been waiting on from the time of Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden. It was a plain as it could be – had the Sadducees simply believed. What about you? Do you believe that Jesus is both the Son of David and the Son of God?

Be alert

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation

Let’s say that the CEO of your corporation, whose home office is in another city, informed your boss that he would be coming to your office, but he was not sure which day he would be there. There would be a mixture of feelings that could include excitement, dread, fear, and nervousness. Maybe some would be afraid that he was coming to close your office down. Others might be excited because they’ve had the opportunity to meet him and he is a really good guy with a great sense of humor. Others might have a “wait and see” kind of attitude. Regardless of how staff feel, everyone would be on the alert and busy getting ready for his coming. Each day that went by people would constantly have their eye on the door watching for his arrival.

Now let’s say that months went by and the CEO still hadn’t come. Perhaps staff begin to stop looking for him and all the preparations that were made begin to go back to how things were before. They’d stop keeping an eye on the door and parking lot and then when they least expect it – he arrives. This is how it is with Jesus’s coming – both at his incarnation and for his second coming. Jesus told us in Matthew 24:42:

Therefore be alert, since you don’t
know what day your Lord is coming

When you least expect it

When we expect someone important to arrive, we clean the house. We’re on our best behavior. We invite others to the big event. But when we don’t know when that person is coming, we slack off and we end up caught unawares. Then when we least expect it they show up and they catch as we truly are.

On the alert for the Messiah

Since Adam and Eve sinned, God said He would make a way for redemption and it was eagerly anticipated. From the time Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah, it would still be another 600 years before Jesus was born. When Jesus did arrive, He was nothing like what the people had conceived in their minds that the Messiah would be. So they dismissed Him as their long awaited for and anticipated Messiah.

The people were expecting a majestic king, not a lowly baby in a manger. They expected a great military leader, not a kind and gentle miracle worker. Whatever picture they had in their minds about the Messiah – Jesus didn’t measure up to the image they had created. However, had they truly studied the Scriptures, they would have seen that the Messiah was living among them.

On the alert for His second coming

Now, centuries later, we’ve fallen into the same expectation – or rather lack of expectation. Even Paul and the other disciples expected Jesus to return any day following His ascension into Heaven. But Jesus hasn’t returned yet and we’ve lost the expectation of His return. We are not on the alert – watching for His return. We live the way we want to and many of us are going to be caught unaware. What will you be doing the moment Jesus returns? Will you be ashamed or joyful? Will you be ready or left behind?

Be alert: We don’t know when He is coming

The people did not know when He would arrive at His birth and we today do not know when He will come again. In fact, the Bible tells us that even Jesus doesn’t know the moment when He will return again. Only God knows and Jesus simply waits for God to say, “Go get my children.” But since we do not know when He is coming, we need to be living on the alert, watching for His return. Since we don’t know when He will return for us, we need to live every moment as if He is coming in the next moment. If He came today, are you ready?

John 12:37. Do You Believe?

Have you ever thought as you read your Bible how people in Jesus’ day didn’t believe He was the long-awaited Messiah? The ones that opposed Him the most were the priests, the Pharisees and other religious leaders – the very ones who studied the Law of Moses and the prophets. But if that wasn’t enough, then what about all the miracles He did? Wouldn’t that be enough to convince them? What about you? Do you believe?

Yet, here in John 12:37, we find that even though Jesus performed many miracles in their presence, they did not believe Him. So what got in the way of their belief? As a man, he was simply not the stuff Messiah’s are made of. Not the kind of Messiah they wanted. They wanted someone to crown king. Someone that would restore the nation of Israel to its glory days when David was king. Someone who would free them from Roman rule.

There is another reason, though, that the people did not believe Jesus was the Messiah. God planned for many in Israel to be unbelieving and to reject Jesus. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that [the first indicator that the unbelief was planned] the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled. John then goes on to quote Isaiah 53:1. So that…God planned Israel’s rejection of Jesus because He had a plan of redemption for all of mankind.

It was their rejection of Jesus that sent Jesus to the cross. Without the cross, there is no salvation. So God planned for Israel’s rejection and murder of His Only Son.

What about all the miracles Jesus did? Israel’s history is full of prophets who did miracles. But none of them claimed to be The Son of God. For the Jews, making this claim was pure blasphemy – and that is what they rejected. We also see throughout the Bible that there were those who practice sorcery. Remember when Moses cast his rod down and it became a serpent? Pharaoh’s magicians did the same thing – but then Moses serpent ate all the other serpents. King Saul wanted to talk to Samuel – only Samuel was dead, so he went to see a witch who could summon the dead. So the miracles, in and of themselves, didn’t prove Jesus was the Messiah.

The people were certainly fascinated by the miracle Jesus did. They flocked to Him for the chance of seeing Him perform a miracle. And yet, still, the did not believe. Maybe at some point in your life, you found yourself in a place of doubt. A time when you’ve been questioning what God has called you to do. Maybe you’ve been questioning your salvation. Or maybe you’ve been questioning if Jesus really is the Son of God. Maybe you’ve found yourself saying, “God, if Jesus would only do a miracle, I would believe.” Don’t be so sure. The people of Jesus’ day watched him do miracle after miracle and still they did not believe. Even after he rose from the dead, there were still those who did not believe.

Each one of us must decide what we believe about who Jesus is. We have the Bible from Genesis to Revelation that tells us about Him. We can point to the prophecies told about Him and show where the prophecy was fulfilled. But in the end, the only way to salvation and eternal life is by faith. There is no other way. We must simply believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died in our place to pay the price for our sins, but then rose again and now lives in heaven.

The Bible also tells us that Jesus is coming again – are you ready?

John 3:30. Is Christ on the Increase in Your Life?

May 11 John 3 30

John the Baptist’s assigned calling, the purpose for his life, was to be the “forerunner” of Jesus. John was six months older than Jesus and he was Jesus’ cousin. Before Jesus began his public ministry, John’s job was to point the people to the coming Messiah. He had been preparing them and baptizing them, calling them to repent of their sins. Once Jesus stepped on the scene, John’s job would decrease while Jesus’ job was increase. However, for a time, their ministries overlapped. Then some of John’s disciples came to him and said that people were going to Jesus to get baptized. John was quick to respond that he was not the Christ and to point people to Jesus as the Christ. Because Jesus is Christ – the Messiah – the people should be going to Him to be baptized. John then said that he must decrease so that Christ would increase.

This same statement is true for us today. As we surrender more and more of our lives to Christ, growing spiritually, we should be decreasing and Christ should increasing. AsMay 11 Ctt Christ increases in our lives, the result should be our lives reflecting more and more of Him and less and less of us. If Christ is increasing in our lives, then our old sinful nature should become less noticeable as Christ transforms us into a new person. This means that old habits (such as cursing, lying, drinking, abusing drugs, stealing, adultery, etc.) are put away while new habits (such as attending church, worshiping, singing praise songs, Bible study and prayer) replace the old. As Jesus increases in our lives then our lives should take more and more shape from Him. His characteristics will become evident in our lives. We will begin to forgive like He forgives and love unconditionally like He loves. We would enjoy spending time in His Word, studying it and applying it to our lives. We would spend time in prayer, not as a requirement, but as the opportunity to talk to our Savior.

Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Would you say that you are decreasing and Christ is increasing in your life? How has your life changed since you became a Christian so that Jesus is reflected in your life? What areas still need work? Would you confess those to God now and surrender them to Him?

The book started out as daily posts on Wellspring’s website to encourage couples to develop Godly marriages and they quickly became the most viewed pages of the site. Julia feels God led her to organize the collection of posts into a book format that couples would be able to work through year after year. She enjoys going to churches and ministry events to talk about how the activities in the book will develop stronger marriages that are centered in Christ, which will then create stronger families.

Currently, Julia is finishing her second book, entitled: Help! No one said ministry was about spiritual battles and difficult people! In this book Julia uses her studies in psychology and professional counseling to take a Biblical approach to self-care to help people serving in the ministry not burn-out, give-up, and walk away from the call God placed on their lives. Whether your ministry position is volunteer or the senior pastor, this book will help you recognize the areas in your life that are depleted and need a little TLC so you can keep doing what God has called you to. You’re assignment in the Kingdom of God is vitally important! Keep an eye out for this book when it is released and see how Biblical self-care can keep you serving God. Julia can bring these concepts to your next ministry staff retreat to help your ministry team refill, recharge, and renew their heart for their area of ministry.

After years of envisioning the idea and concept of Wellspring Christian Ministries, Julia decided to take a leap of faith and merge her vocational, collegiate, and life experiences and make the dream God put on her heart a reality.  Today we reach people world-wide through blog posts, speaking events, and devotionals. With a strong burden for our nation, Julia has a passion to see a revival sweep across our land and many of her writings and speaking events have a theme of calling God’s people to humble themselves and pray, and seek God’s face as they repent of sin and tune their hearts to following God’s will and His commandments.

Her message will engage individuals, inspire teams and transform the heart that is prayerfully seeking to live a God-first life. As the Holy Spirit speaks through her messages, He will work in every willing heart to create a life that is wholly sold out to God.

Luke 20:41-44. Son of David or Son of God?

April 26 Luke 20 41-44 NKJV

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were constantly trying to trap Jesus in an effort to discredit Him and His teachings. They would pose difficult theological questions to which they hoped He would not either not be able to answer or that He would commit blasphemy with His answer and the people would no longer follow Him. But then, Jesus turns around and posed His own difficult theological question: How could the Messiah be both the son of David and David’s divine Lord? The Bible does not provide an answer from the religious leaders and Jesus left the question open. The only possible answer is that Jesus, the Messiah, was both fully God, making Him Lord, and fully human, a descendant or son of David. For the religious leaders to provide this answer would mean that they would have to acknowledge that Jesus is who He said He is – the Messiah. Look at these verses that foretold the Messiah would be a descendant of David:

The New Testament shows us that Jesus fulfilled these prophetic messages.

Don’t forget to learn this week’s memory verse:

Memorize and hide in your heart one memory verse each week in 2020. If you didn’t start the challenge at the beginning of the year, just jump in now and be sure to sign up to get our weekly Memory verse in your email so you don’t miss a week.

memory verse logoIn 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem. You will begin to see the elements of our website and posts reflect this emphasis. We hope you’ll join us in praying for God to pour out the Holy Spirit with a mighty rushing wind of revival for our nation and around the world.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  For the past few  weeks, we have been focusing on repentance. This week, we look at the spiritual transformation that takes place when we surrender our heart to God.

This week’s memory verse:

Isaiah 41:10

Do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.
