Deuteronomy 31-32

Luke 1:1-23

I AM

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus usually preferred to refer to Himself as “Son of Man.” However, here, when Caiaphas, the high priest, questioned Jesus and asked Him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus responded with, “I AM.” This was more than a confession of identity. It was a pronouncement of His deity. The significance of God’s self-given name encompasses all that He is, and how we are to relate to Him.

The first time I AM appears as a name for God

The first time we see “I AM” as a name for God is in Exodus 3:14 when Moses asks God who he should tell the Israelites who sent him and God replies with, “Tell them I AM has sent you.” This name for God is know as a Tetragrammaton because of its four letters and it is the only proper name for God. It is also the most frequent name, occurring in the Old Testament 6,828 times (almost 700 times in the Psalms alone).

I AM is what we need Him to be

When God said to Moses, “I AM THAT I AM,” he was revealing both a promise and a pledge that was actually a part of His name. The Hebrew words are ehyeh asher ehyeh can be more accurately translated, “I will be what I will be.” It was God’s way of promising to Moses and Israel that God would be what they needed Him to be. At that time, the Israelites were crying out to God because they were slaves in Egypt and they needed a deliverer. God would be their deliverer.

Whenever God uses the name I AM, He is saying HE IS whatever we need Him to be. Do you need a provider? God says, I AM provider. Do you need a healer? God says, I AM healer. Do you need someone to love you? God says I AM love. Do you need a Savior? Jesus says I died for you and I AM your Savior if you confess me as Lord. What do you need the I AM to be today?

Jesus is the I AM for what we need – a Savior to save us from our sins

Jesus, standing before the high priest again at his trial says, “I AM.” He was not simply confessing who He was – He was once again promising to be what we need Him to be. We too need a deliverer – someone to deliver us from our sin and condemnation. Jesus would become what we needed Him to become – the sacrificial Lamb as atonement for our sins. He would become our Savior.

Lord, thank you for being exactly what we needed – our Savior. Thank you for continuing to be what we need in every moment of every day because we humbly acknowledge that in every moment of every day, we need you. Thank you for being our I AM.
