Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

When revival doesn’t happen

It would seem that the people didn’t learn anything from the flood. In Genesis 18 and 19 we find that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were so corrupt that God said their “sin is very grave.” The biggest clue that we have as to why their sin was so grave is found when two angels come to Sodom in the evening to see if the sin was as great as the outcry that had reached the throne of God.

When they arrived at the city, Lot saw them and invited them into his home, knowing how bad the sin was in the city. It wasn’t long before the men of the city were banging on Lot’s door demanding that he send the two angels who appeared as men out so they could gang rape them. So obviously homosexuality was a sin of Sodom and it is where we get our word “sodomy”.

Was homosexuality the only sin of Sodom and Gomorrah?

However, homosexuality wasn’t the only sin of these two cities. Ezekiel 16:49-50 says, “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me…”

The Hebrew word translated “detestable” refers to something that is morally disgusting and is the exact same word used in Leviticus 18:22 that refers to homosexuality as an “abomination.” Additionally, Jude 7 says, “…Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.”

So, while homosexuality was not the only sin in which the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah indulged, it does appear to be the primary reason for the destruction of the cities.

The Need for Revival

  1. If God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah primarily because of homosexuality, could our nation be in danger of the same?
  2. The act of homosexuality is an abomination to God. However the people who live a homosexual life are creations of God and He loves them. Yet the Bible is very clear that God despises the sin of homosexuality. Because we know He sees homosexuality as an abomination, we can also know that God would never create a person to be “born” homosexual. The homosexual lifestyle is a choice that people make.
  3. The Bible says that “whosoever” can come to Christ and have eternal life (John 3:16, Revelation 22:17). There is no sin too big that God cannot redeem and save.

Praying for Revival

Father, homosexuality is rampant in our world and in our nation. If the people of Sodom and Gomorrah could see our world today, they would wonder why we are not judged today as you judged them. But yet there are still righteous people in our nation. It’s time we stop being “culturally sensitive” and start calling sin by it name. But at the same time, we need to show those who are caught in the grips of homosexual sin the same love that Jesus would show them. Just as Jesus died for me and my sin, so He died for their sin.

God, we ask you to reveal the lies of Satan to those trapped in homosexual sin and help them discover the unconditional, everlasting love of Jesus. May we not sit in judgement, but extend the invitation to come to Christ. May we not look the other way as we sit within the walls of our church, but go out into the highways and byways and bring them to Christ.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Is Revival too hard for God?

Let’s face it! Our world is at least (if not more) corrupt than Sodom and Gomorrah. Probably more corrupt than the time of the flood. But that doesn’t meant that revival in 2021 is too hard for God.

God promised Abraham a son and through that son, Abraham would become a father of many nations and all the world would be blessed. The only problem was both Abraham and Sarah were old. Too old for having children. She was way past menopause. In fact, Sarah said, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” She was 90 years old and Abraham was 100. So Sarah laughed at the news that she would become a mother. The Lord’s response was, “Why did Sarah laugh…Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Luke 1:37 says, “Nothing will be impossible with God.”

Search your heart. Do you feel the world is way past the point of experiencing a revival? Do you feel that it is pointless to pray for God to send a revival? If so, remember that nothing is too hard for God.

The Need for Revival

  1. Do you think its too late for our nation to experience revival?
  2. Do you truly believe that nothing is impossible for God?
  3. If you find yourself doubting that revival is possible, ask God to forgiving you for limiting what He can do and ask Him to revive your own heart. Then let it spread to those around you.

Praying for Revival

Father, how we tend to limit you because we cannot fully comprehend your power, holiness, righteousness, and love. We acknowledge now in this moment that it is never too late for people to turn their hearts to you while they are living. It is only too late after we leave this earth and enter eternity. God, we acknowledge the enormity of sin in our nation and in our world but we ask that you send a revival and turn the hearts of our people back to you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Revival is needed because of the intention of man’s heart

Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” It’s just the nature of mankind. It’s nothing that has to be learned or taught. We’re born that way. We need to have eyes that see ourselves the way that God sees us. Instead, we tend to rationalize our behaviors. We look around at others who sin “more” or “bigger” than we do and pat ourselves on the back because “I’m not that bad.”

But when we stop looking at everyone else and look at our own faults, asking the Holy Spirit to show us just how sinful we are, then we begin to see that “we have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.” (Isaiah 64:6) We have to come face to face with the words of Paul in Romans 3:10 that says, “none is righteous, no, not one” and in Romans 3:23 that says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

The Need for Revival

  1. Do you compare yourself to others in the world and convince yourself you’re not that bad? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you your own sins.
  2. Ask God to break your heart for the sins you commit that break His heart. Then ask Him to forgive you and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Praying for Revival

Father, every day we are guilty of sin. Help us to stop looking at those around us and to become concerned and burdened for the sin in our own life. Give us the courage to allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and know our thoughts to see if there is any wicked ways in us. (Psalm 139:23) Father, we confess these sins you’ve revealed to us and ask you to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Revival is needed when there is No Remorse

If anyone needed to experience revival, Cain did. After Cain killed his brother and became guilty of the world’s first murder, God asked Cain where Abel was. Cain had the audacity to flippantly reply to God, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” He denies any knowledge about his brother and shows no sign of remorse. God therefore punishes Cain by alienating him from both the ground (he was a farmer) and God. He becomes a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.

My Punishment is “too much”

Not only does Cain not demonstrate remorse for his actions, but he complains that God’s punishment is “greater than he can bear.” He whines to God that because of God’s punishment that whoever finds him will kill him. So God places a mark on Cain (the Bible doesn’t tell us what the mark is, but it had to be something visible). Additionally God declares that whoever kills Cain, then vengeance would be taken on him sevenfold.

The Result

Not once do we see Cain repenting or seeking God’s mercy and grace. However, God gave it in the sense of providing protection over Cain’s life. Yet still we find one of the saddest verses in the Bible in Genesis 4:16. “Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.” The word, “Nod” means “wandering,” or “exile.” Cain would have rather lived in his sin than to be in the presence of the Lord!

The Need for Revival

  1. Is there true remorse and repentance for sin in our nation?
  2. Would people today rather live in their sin then to be in the presence of God?
  3. How has God extended his grace to our nation over the years? Do you believe that God is getting tired of giving grace to a nation prefers living in sin to dwelling in His presence?

Praying for Revival

Father, we only have to listen to the news or read the newspapers to see how rampant sin is. We can see how political parties and our government continue to lead our nation on a path away from you. We ask that Christian in our nation will become burdened for the sin that runs rampant without a heart of remorse. Forgive us our sins. Cause us to seek your face with all our heart, mind, and soul. May we humbly bow before you, pray, and turn from our wicked ways with hearts that are broken and contrite. Give us boldness to stand up and follow your commandments. May we once again become a nation that honors you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Exodus 20:3-17. The 10 Commandments

Jan 29 Exodus 20 3-17 NKJV ten commandments

At a summer religious camp for children one of the counselors was leading a discussion on the purpose God has for all of his creation. They began to find good reasons for clouds and trees and rocks and rivers and animals and just about everything else in nature. Finally, one of the children said, “If God has a purpose for everything, then why did He create poison ivy?” The discussion leader gulped and, as he struggled with the question, one of the other children came to his rescue, saying, “The reason God made poison ivy is that He wanted us to know there are certain things we should keep our cotton-pickin’ hands off of.”

God’s Ten Commandments provide the basic moral and spiritual compass for all humanity. They tell us what we should do and what we should “keep our cotton-picking hands (and eyes) off of.” They lay the foundation for all of our laws. Our government may try to pass laws that remove any display of the Ten Commandment from government property, but to remove the commandments, would be to strike the very laws we live by out of the statutes that govern society. Could you imagine living in a society where there are no laws that prohibit murder or theft? The more we try to remove God’s laws from our lives, the more chaotic and lawless the world becomes. The state of our society today begins with the breaking of the very first of these commandments: You shall have no other gods before Me. When we take God out of the equation, only lawlessness remains. God wants to be God over all parts of our lives. When we move Him out of that position, Satan creeps in with temptations and too often, we fall into sin.

God never intended His laws to be a rigid list of rules so that life would be miserable. Instead the list is a display of His character and shows us the way to have a full and abundant life. Our greatest joy comes when we live in such a way that we show His character in all that we do and say.  Since God knows our thoughts and He knows the way that each one of us naturally responds in different situations, His laws provide the means towards having healthy relationships with others and with Him.

God also knew that no human being would ever be able to keep these laws, except for His holy and righteous Son, Jesus. Still He gave them so that we would have a moral compass to follow and to show us our own sinful nature in need of a Savior. Where we err in sin, God’s grace abounds in the loving sacrifice of Jesus.

Just as with our governmental laws, where a law is broken there are consequences, so there is a consequence with breaking God’s law. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” The good news is that this statement is followed with a “but”….”but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God’s grace and forgiveness comes much easier than that of the government! It’s a simple gift of faith and trust and the belief of Jesus as God’s only Son. The government would have you pay the fine and/or do the time. God simply says, “Come to Me with a repentant heart by faith and ask Me to forgive you and I will.”

memory verse logo

Ezekiel 14:6

This is what the Lord God says: Repent and turn away from your idols; turn your faces away from all your detestable things.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  Our verse last week focused on praying. For the next few weeks, we will be focusing on repentance.

078924: A Nation in Crisis A Nation in Crisis

By Ray Stedman / Discovery House

Every day the headlines announce more violence and evil. Our hearts groan as we wonder what life will be like for the next generation. It all seems hopeless, which is probably how Jeremiah felt as he lived among the people of the nation of Judah.

Jeremiah was a reluctant but faithful prophet who spent forty-two years serving God and warning the people to repent. His heart was saddened and angered by the people’s indifference to God and the moral decay that surrounded him. Everything was falling apart–yet Jeremiah continued to seek the Lord.

As we face personal trauma and national crisis, we can learn from the prophet’s example. Ray Stedman walks us through the book of Jeremiah, revealing that repentance was the only answer then–and it’s the only answer today. When people repent, God is faithful to His Word, planting the seeds of new life and giving us hope.
