One Year Bible Reading Plan

1 Chronicles 1-2

John 7:32-53

Streams of Living Water

When talking to the woman at the well, Jesus says he is the living water. Then in chapter 7, Jesus says that if we are thirsty we are to come to him. But just what does it mean? Jesus isn’t taking about physical thirst, but spiritual thirst. And when we are spiritually thirsty, we need to come to Jesus, who is the living water.

In order to understand John 7:38, we need to look at the verses before and after it. In verse 37, we find that it is the last day of a feast and Jesus stood up and cried out to the people, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” At times, God brings seasons of spiritual hunger and thirst as a way to draw us closer to Him. Just as when we are physically hungry or thirsty, we seek out food and water, if we are spiritually hungry and thirsty, we should seek out Jesus.

Experiencing spiritual thirst

Certainly, when we neglect to spend time in prayer, Bible study, and worship, we will experience a spiritual hunger and thirst. Other times, we might be reading out Bible every day, praying, and going to church every week, but we still feel some spiritual hunger and thirst. In some ways, the spiritual thirst for Christ should never really be quenched while we are living on earth.

When we experience spiritual hunger and thirst, we come to Jesus with a desire to know Him more. The more we know Him, the more we understand His deep, unfailing, unending, reckless love for us – a love that cost Him His life. The more we understand His love for us, the more we love Him. And the more we love Him, the more we want to get to know Him – and the cycle continues. So if you are experiencing a spiritual thirst, come to Jesus and He will give you living water.

Finding Rivers of Living Water

In verse 38, Jesus continues speaking to the people and says, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” If we are to believe in Jesus as the Scripture said, there are some questions we must ask ourselves and determine how we will answer them. We will look at how the Bible answers these questions, but each one of us must determine how we will answer them.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is fully God and He was fully man. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” In John 8:58, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am!” In the Old Testament (Exodus 3:14), Moses asked God, “Who should I say sent me?” God replied, “Tell them I AM sent you.” So in John 8:58, when Jesus said, “I am” He was saying He was God. John 1:1 says, “the Word was God” and in John 1:14, it says, “the Word became flesh.” This indicates that Jesus was God…in the flesh.

Jesus came to earth as a baby, born to the virgin Mary, grew into a man and lived here on earth just as any of us do, but without any sin. Jesus felt hunger, thirst, anger, sadness, pain, compassion. He had friends, family, and enemies. Jesus is also the Son of God. In Matthew 3:17, God, speaking out of heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” Even the demons that encounter Jesus understood that Jesus was God’s son. In Mark 5:7, a demon said to Jesus: “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” In Mark 8:29, Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered that Jesus was Christ, the Messiah. Today, Jesus is asking you, “Who do you say that I am?”

In Mark 8:29, Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered that Jesus was Christ, the Messiah. Today, Jesus is asking you, “Who do you say that I am?”

What was the need for Jesus to come to earth?

From the very first sin committed by Eve in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world and every human other than Jesus has sinned. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” While God created humans to have a relationship with Him, sin keeps us separated from a righteous, holy God. Isaiah 59:2 says, “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you.”

Not only does sin separate us from God, but there is a penalty for sin. Romans 6:23 says that the wages we earned for our sin is death. It was because of our sin that Jesus needed to come to earth. He was sent here to pay the penalty in our place for our sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

How did Jesus meet this need?

Hebrews 9:22 tells us that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” If the wages of sin is death, then it was Jesus’ blood shed on the cross that cleanses us from sin. 1 John 1:7 tells us that “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Because Jesus lived a sinless life, He was the only one who could provide the payment for our sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” 1 Peter 2:24 says, “He Himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.” Jesus met the sin debt of our sin by his sacrificial death on the cross and then conquered death through His resurrection.

Where is Jesus today?

If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then his sacrificial death would not be enough. If he was still in tomb then he would be no different than Mohammad or Buddha. Luke 24:50-51 says, “Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He blessed them. And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven. Today, Jesus sits at the right hand of God. Hebrews 10:12 tell us, “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,”

Why did Jesus do this for me?

There is only one reason that Jesus would sacrificially give His life in my place as payment for my sin – Love. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” 1 John 4:10 says, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” Love is the only reason that Jesus offered His life in my place to pay my sin debt. When you think about it, before God created Adam and Eve, He knew they would sin and Jesus would have to pay their debt. Before He created you or me, He knew we would sin and Jesus would have to pay our debt. But he created us anyway. Why? Because God is love. And He loves you and me.

When did I realize I am a sinner?

In order to receive the living water that Jesus offered, we all must come to the realization that we are sinners, lost without Jesus, and have a need for Him to save us form our sins.

What must I do to receive living water?

First we must admit that we are sinners and need a Savior. Second we must believe in our heart by faith that Jesus is the Son of God, that He lives a sinless life, died on the cross, was buried for three days, and then rose again. Third, we must confess our sin to God, asking Him to forgive us. Then we receive the free gift of God’s salvation by faith as we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast.” There is absolutely nothing you can do on your own to be saved. You can’t earn it. You can’t live “good enough.” You can’t buy you way into heaven. It is only by faith in Jesus that you receive God’s gracious and free gift of salvation.

Only the Children on God can receive Living Water

Only as children of God are we able to receive the streams of living water that flows from deep within that Jesus mentioned in John 7:38. And in verse 39, we find that the living water Jesus was talking about is the Holy Spirit. Once we accept Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit dwells within us, teaching us, guiding us, correcting us, encouraging us, and drawing us ever closer to God as we live our lives.

Are you spiritually thirsty today? Come to the well that never runs dry. Jesus is waiting. You can come just as you are.

When will the Kingdom of God come?

In Luke 17:20-21, the Pharisees ask Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come. They were wanting to know the cosmic signs that would precede the coming of the kingdom so they could be sure they wouldn’t miss it. We, too, want to know when the kingdom of God will come and what signs will indicate that His kingdom is coming. But Jesus didn’t give cosmic signs or date. He told them that the kingdom of God was right there in their midst! The kingdom of God was standing among them and they didn’t even recognize Him.

The kingdom of God will not come in ways to be observed

Certainly the Bible tells us things that must occur before Jesus’ return to earth. But what Jesus wanted the Pharisees to know was that the kingdom of God comes quietly and is only evident in the change in people’s lives as they surrender to Jesus and place their faith in Him as their Savior. Because Jesus lives within us, we too can say that the Kingdom of is in our midst.

What is the Kingdom of God?

The easy answer would be to note that a kingdom is that territory over which a king reigns. Since we understand that God is the Creator of all things, the extent of His realm must be the whole world. Manifestly, then, the kingdom of God is wherever God reigns, and since He reigns everywhere, the kingdom of God is everywhere. But the Pharisees were asking about God’s messianic kingdom. It is a kingdom that will be ruled by God’s appointed Messiah, who will be not just the Redeemer of His people, but their King.

When Jesus stood before Pilate, he said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” In one sense, His kingdom is something spiritual that takes place in our hearts when we accept Him as our Savior. But Jesus’ kingdom will also break through into this world and be a kingdom that is ruled by God’s anointed Messiah. So in this sense, the kingdom of God will come. But at the same time, Jesus is King right this minute and he sits ready for his Father to say, “Son, God get my children!” And in that moment, the rapture will happen and Christians all over the world will leave this world and be taken to heaven.

Our citizenship is in Heaven

American theologian and preacher Robert Sproul told this story:

In 1990, I was invited into Eastern Europe to do a series of lectures in three countries, first in Czechoslovakia, then in Hungary, and finally in Romania. As we were leaving Hungary, we were warned that the border guards in Romania were quite hostile to Americans and that we should be prepared to be hassled and possibly even arrested at the border.

Sure enough, when our rickety train reached the border of Romania, two guards got on. They couldn’t speak English, but they pointed for our passports, then pointed to our luggage. They wanted us to bring our bags down from the luggage rack and open them up, and they were very brusque and rude. Then, suddenly, their boss appeared, a burly officer who spoke some broken English. He noticed that one of the women in our group had a paper bag in her lap, and there was something peeking out of it. The officer said: “What this? What in bag?” Then he opened the bag and pulled out a Bible.

I thought, “Uh-oh, now we’re in trouble.” The officer began leafing through the Bible, looking over the pages very rapidly. Then he stopped and looked at me. I was holding my American passport, and he said, “You no American.” And he looked at Vesta and said, “You no American.” He said the same thing to the others in our group. But then he smiled and said, “I am not Romanian.”

By now we were quite confused, but he pointed at the text, gave it to me, and said, “Read what it says.” I looked at it and it said, “Our citizenship is in heaven.”‘

Who acknowledges Jesus as King?

On that train were a group of people who were citizens of the kingdom of God. But to the casual eye, it wasn’t observable. Of course, the whole universe is God’s kingdom. But when the New Testament talks about ‘the kingdom of God’ it OFTEN means the sphere which acknowledges Jesus as king.

The magi who found Jesus as an infant acknowledged him as KING OF THE JEWS.

Jesus’ disciples acknowledged him as king. Simon Peter told him, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ I think that counts as acknowledging him as king.

Two demons in Gadarenes says to Jesus, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” They certainly knew who he was because they had been in heaven as angles before following Lucifer in a rebellion against God and found themselves cast out of heaven. They also know their time is coming where they will be confined to hell, so they are asking Jesus if he is sending them before the appointed time.

The people who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem acknowledged him as king. They shouted, ‘Blessed is THE KING who comes in the name of the Lord!’

Pilate acknowledged Jesus as king. He had a notice prepared which said, ‘THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.’

One of the criminals crucified with Jesus said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” You can’t have a kingdom if you’re not a king.

The sacrificial king

Yes, people in Jesus’ day proclaimed him as King. And because the Son of God lived and walked among them, there was a sense in which God’s kingdom HAD come. But in that moment, it was partial and it wasn’t yet observable. The people were looking for a royal king who would remove the Roman hold on them and re-establish the throne of David. But Jesus was the son of a poor, teenage girl, who in the eyes of the people was pregnant before marriage. Can you imagine the Pharisees looking Jesus up and down, sniffing and thinking, ‘That isn’t very impressive!’

The Pharisees couldn’t recognize Jesus as king because they didn’t understand that his role on earth was to be a sacrificial king. He came to give his life as payment for our sins. The kingdom of God that was in the midst of the Pharisees couldn’t be observed because they were looking for a conquering king rather than a sacrificial king.

Thy Kingdom come

But wait! There’s more! Yes, the kingdom had come and stood in the midst of them, but in the “Lord’s Prayer” Jesus taught the disciples to pray and part of that prayer is “Thy kingdom come.” He was teaching the disciples to pray for the coming of God’s kingdom. Jesus is coming again. The question is will you be ready? The Pharisees, despite all the training they had in the scriptures, still didn’t get it that Jesus, the Messiah, stood in their midst. They were not ready.

Are you ready for the coming of the kingdom of God?

After his encounter with the Pharisees, Jesus turns to his disciples and tells them about the Kingdom of God that will come. Whereas the coming of God’s kingdom was not observable when Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees, on the day when he comes again to take up his kingship there will be no mistaking it! His coming will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.

Great News! Jesus is coming again.

For those of us who have put our trust in Jesus, the fact that Jesus is coming again is wonderful news. We look forward to the time that Jesus will return. The Bible tells us that as His return, a trumpet will sound we who have placed our faith in Jesus as our Savior will be taken up into heaven in a “twinkling of an eye.” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52) The “twinkling of the eye” is the time it takes for light to enter the eye, reach the back of the eye, and be reflected back out. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second, so the Twinkle is about one billionth of a second. In the millisecond it takes to be raptured, we will find ourselves in the presence of the Lord! We will “meet the Lord in the air.”

But for those who are not ready, the news isn’t so good.

Somber news for those left behind

But regrettably, it isn’t a wonderful outlook for everybody. In Luke 16, Jesus told the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Both men died, but the rich man went to hell and Lazarus was taken to heaven. In brief, his message was, ‘Reject God’s salvation and the time will come when you will regret it.’ That’s a somber message. In Luke 17:26-37, we find that some will be taken at Jesus’ return, some left. For those who are left, there will be judgement. The vultures will gather. There will be death. That’s also a somber message. Don’t be a procrastinator for Jesus! Today is the day to be sold out to Him… not tomorrow!

Because of the Rapture, tomorrow may never come! If your not ready for the coming of the Kingdom of God, now is the time to repent and ask Jesus to be your Savior. My friend is coming and when he does, every knee will bow and proclaim him King.

Seeking Sinners

Jesus calls Matthew to be a disciple

Everywhere Jesus went, he encounters sinners who needed a Savior. When Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector, to be a disciple, the Pharisees and scribes were totally upset. They saw tax collectors as ritually unclean and therefore socially “off-limits” to devout Jews. Matthew (also known as Levi) was a Jew, but he was also a hated outcast. According to the religious leaders he was “unclean” because he worked for the Roman government. Also, the tax collectors also made “extra” money by charging the people more than the tax required. Needless to say, tax collectors were despised, rejected, hated. Like every other person ever created, Matthew was a sinner, yet, Jesus called Matthew to follow him and be His disciple.

“Those kinds of people — sinners”

The scribes and Pharisees asked Jesus, “Why are you eating with those kinds of people – the tax collectors and sinners? Jesus’ response was, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” The very people Jesus came to Earth for was for sinners.

Other sinners Jesus came in contact with

Matthew wasn’t the only one. We can also see Jesus sitting by a well because He had a divine appointment with the Woman at the Well. Or, the woman who was caught in adultery and shoved at the feet of Jesus. The religious leaders wanted to stone her. Did you ever notice it was just her? Where was the man she was caught in adultery with? No one brought him for stoning. But Jesus quietly begins to write in the sand and those with stone in their hands began to walk away. When the last one as gone, he asked the woman, “Where are your accusers?” She looks around realizing they were all gone and says, “No where.” Jesus lovingly says, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”

And then there’s the thieves crucified with Jesus. One died lost and went to hell. But the other one, recognized Jesus as His Savior and cried out, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

The King of kings came seeking sinners – like you and me

The King of kings came to seeking sinners. Sinners like me and like you. The Pharisees thought so highly of themselves that they saw no need for Jesus as a Savior. They were content with the ritual cleaning. They didn’t want to be confronted with their need for a Savior. The Pharisees believed they became righteous through the rituals that had been handed down since the days of Moses. For someone to know and recognize their need for a Savior, they must first see themselves as sinners who were spiritually sick and in desperate need for a spiritual physician who could introduce them to grace, forgiveness, and repentance. That is why He came – he came seeking sinners to call them to repentance.

Jesus, thank you for calling us to repentance. Thank you for sitting with sinners so that we can know of your love, grace, and forgiveness. Thank you for coming to earth so that we can see our need for You.

New in the Teespring Store: The Prayer of Blessing

We’ve added a new canvas print to the Teespring Store.

God instructed the Israelite priests to pray the prayer of blessing every day over the people. The prayer is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Hang the canvass in your home or carry the mug, tote bag, or water bottle and let the prayer of blessing impact all those who you meet throughout the day.

We’ve also put this design on a poster, coffee mug, a stainless steel water bottle, phone cases, and a few other products.
