Go with Rejoicing to the House of the Lord

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Week 1 of Advent: Rejoicing

As we are preparing our hearts for the coming Christmas, take a few minutes to examine you heart and attitude about going to church. Do you go just at Easter and Christmas – or maybe just to make a parent or spouse happy? Do you go every week – but out of a sense of obligation or duty – because it’s the “Christian” thing to do? How would our churches be different if we went rejoicing with a sense of expectation or meeting Jesus there? The psalmist wrote in Psalm 122:1-4:

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand within they gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together: Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord.

Who are you rejoicing to see this Christmas?

Who is someone you are excited to see this holiday season. Maybe you’re going home for the holidays or maybe your kids are coming in for winter break in college. Or maybe someone you’ve not seen in person because of COVID? When we haven’t seen family or friends for a while we’re excited to see them. Maybe you’re counting down the days, your suitcase is already practically packed, the gifts are wrapped, the oil has been changed in the car and you’re just waiting with every tick of the clock to jump in the car and go.

Rejoicing: The Psalmist

So when you examined your heart and attitude about going to church, how do you feel when it’s time to go to church? Do you have the same eager anticipation to visit the Lord in His house that the psalmist did?  Are you more excited to see family and friends this Christmas then spending time with God in church? The psalmist wrote that he was glad when it was time to go to the house of the Lord. What about throughout the week? Do you eagerly anticipate spending time with God by spending time each day studying His Word and talking with Him through prayer?

Rejoicing: The Shepherds

The shepherds were eager to see the newborn King after the angels visited them in the field and told them about His birth:

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. Luke 2:15-16

They didn’t wait until the sun came up. They didn’t stop to get all the sheep back to the sheep pins. The shepherds didn’t stand around talking about the angels that had just appeared in the night sky. They didn’t critique the heavenly choir. Instead, they went with haste. They were eager to see what the angels had been talking about.

Rejoicing to be in His Presence

The thing about being in the presence of God, even as a baby, is that His presence will always change you. If you leave exactly the same as when you arrived, then you haven’t dwelt in His presence. The shepherds found Mary, Joseph, and the baby just as the angels had told them. But when they left, they went and told everyone what they had seen and heard. Then when they returned to the fields, they glorified and praised God. The were different when they left His presence than before they arrived.

The Shepherds received the first birth announcement

There is significance in the fact that the angels brought the birth announcement of Jesus to shepherds first. In ancient Israel, shepherds were generally considered “unclean” in the community of God’s people because of the work they did. They were in daily contact with dirty, smelly sheep, their manure, their blood from cuts and scrapes, and the insects that buzzed around them. All of this meant that shepherds were almost never clean enough to worship with God’s people in God’s presence. So they were generally treated as outsiders. Yet these are the ones chosen to receive the first birth announcement of Christ.

The King of Glory chose the lowly, outcast shepherds, not royalty, to receive His birth announcement. Throughout His ministry on earth, Jesus constantly reached out to the outcasts. He had dinner with tax collectors. He had a divine appointment with the woman at the well. And He mingled with the sick. Healed the lepers. And they all left his presence differently than when they arrived. So when you feel unworthy to come into the presence of the King of Kings, remember that he chose the shepherds to hear the good news of His birth first.

Rejoicing with the Good Shepherd

In John 10:11, Jesus said, I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. The Greek word kalos, translated “good,” describes that which is noble, wholesome, good, and beautiful, in contrast to that which is wicked, mean, foul, and unlovely. It signifies not only that which is good inwardly—character—but also that which is attractive outwardly. It is an innate goodness. Therefore, in using the phrase “the good shepherd,” Jesus is referencing His inherent goodness, His righteousness, and His beauty. As shepherd of the sheep, He is the one who protects, guides, and nurtures His flock. In fact, He gave His life for the sheep–you and me.

As we focus this week of Advent on preparing for His coming, how can we not look forward with eager anticipation to going to the house of the Lord? How can spending time with Jesus every day be a drudgery or obligation? When we reflect on Christ as our Good Shepherd who sacrificially gave himself for us, we should not only be glad to be in His presence but, like the psalmist, we should give thanks.

Today, focus on Jesus as your Good Shepherd – the one who protects, guides, nurtures and gave His life for you – and go with gladness and rejoicing as you enter His presence today.

Preparation for the coming of our Savior

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation for our Savior

The Advent season includes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. It is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, we recall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus. During Advent there are three prevalent themes we see as we wait patiently for the coming of Christ.  We long for the Messiah, are urged to be alert for Jesus’ Second Coming, and meditate on Christ’s presence in our lives now.

As we begin to set our focus on celebrating the true meaning of Christmas and the preparation of our hearts for the time when Christ will return again, let’s read what the prophet, Isaiah, wrote in Isaiah 2:1-5:

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the Lord’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.”

For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come and let us walk In the light of the Lord.

The Preparation for Advent Focuses on Two Key Elements of our Faith

Four Sundays before Christmas Day begins a celebration known as Advent. It is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. During this season, we will focus on two key elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of Christ at His birth. As we take time to pause, reflect, and prepare for the gift of God’s love coming to us through the baby Jesus. The scripture readings associated with Advent encourage proper preparation of our hearts and show us how to adore God in the Incarnation, as we recognize the glory of Jesus and how he frees us from sin and ingratitude. As we focus on the preparations of the coming of the Lord, we will hear from the prophet Isaiah and be drawn to the compelling message of John the Baptist in the Gospels.

What is Advent?

The word “Advent” is anglicized from the Latin word “Adventus” which means, “coming.” It is a season of expectant waiting and preparation. The Latin word “adventus” is a translation of the Greek word “Parousia” commonly used in reference to the Second Coming of Christ. For Christians, the season of Advent serves as a reminder of both of the original waiting that was done by the Hebrews for the birth of their Messiah as well as the waiting of Christ’s return from Heaven where He now sits at the right hand of God.

Advent is a joyful time for reflection and preparation

While the Advent season is a time for reflection and preparation, its mood is joyful. It proclaims the revelation of God’s love as expressed in Christ’s birth in a humble stable, His sacrificial death on the cross, and His victorious resurrection! It points to the hope of Christ’s coming again as the King of kings and Lord of lords. For us today, the church is in a similar situation to Israel at the end of the Old Testament: in exile, waiting and hoping in prayerful expectation for the coming of the Messiah.

Israel looked back to God’s past gracious actions on their behalf in leading them out of Egypt in the Exodus, and on this basis they called for God once again to act for them. God gave the prophet Isaiah a vision of hope that would include peace for the nation. Isaiah says that in days to come, the nations shall stream to the mountain of the Lord, and there we will beat swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks; there, we will learn war no more. God will teach us peace.

Peace on earth, goodwill toward men

That peace cannot happen without the birth of Christ, nor without his death and resurrection. Perhaps this is why the angels sang: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” When Christ comes again, we will experience that peace. For today, we experience peace when we place our faith and trust in Christ who forgives us our sins and makes us a child of God. No longer are we enemies of God, but we have made peace with Him through Christ paying our sin debt and placing our faith in Him. So during Advent we both look back in remembrance of His birth that paves the way towards eternal peace and we look forward with expectation of His second coming and peace on earth.

Focus on the miracle of our Savior’s birth

May we not be like the innkeeper who had no room for Jesus. May our focus not be on the busyness and rushing in the holiday season or on buying and receiving gifts. Instead, let’s focus our minds on the miracle of when our Savior was born in a lowly stable and held in the arms of his virgin mother and the eternal peace that was ushered in along with His birth. May Christ give us a longing for His renewed presence among us.

This Christmas, may we be like the shepherds and come with haste to experience his presence. Like the wise men, may we bring Him our gifts. May we be like Mary and ponder all these things in our hearts. May we be like the angels and sing “Glory to God in the highest,” even as we proclaim our worship and adoration of our Savior. Like Joseph, may we obediently follow your instructions. And may we be like the star that shone brightly leading the wise men to the newborn King as we lead others to Jesus.

Be alert

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation

Let’s say that the CEO of your corporation, whose home office is in another city, informed your boss that he would be coming to your office, but he was not sure which day he would be there. There would be a mixture of feelings that could include excitement, dread, fear, and nervousness. Maybe some would be afraid that he was coming to close your office down. Others might be excited because they’ve had the opportunity to meet him and he is a really good guy with a great sense of humor. Others might have a “wait and see” kind of attitude. Regardless of how staff feel, everyone would be on the alert and busy getting ready for his coming. Each day that went by people would constantly have their eye on the door watching for his arrival.

Now let’s say that months went by and the CEO still hadn’t come. Perhaps staff begin to stop looking for him and all the preparations that were made begin to go back to how things were before. They’d stop keeping an eye on the door and parking lot and then when they least expect it – he arrives. This is how it is with Jesus’s coming – both at his incarnation and for his second coming. Jesus told us in Matthew 24:42:

Therefore be alert, since you don’t
know what day your Lord is coming

When you least expect it

When we expect someone important to arrive, we clean the house. We’re on our best behavior. We invite others to the big event. But when we don’t know when that person is coming, we slack off and we end up caught unawares. Then when we least expect it they show up and they catch as we truly are.

On the alert for the Messiah

Since Adam and Eve sinned, God said He would make a way for redemption and it was eagerly anticipated. From the time Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah, it would still be another 600 years before Jesus was born. When Jesus did arrive, He was nothing like what the people had conceived in their minds that the Messiah would be. So they dismissed Him as their long awaited for and anticipated Messiah.

The people were expecting a majestic king, not a lowly baby in a manger. They expected a great military leader, not a kind and gentle miracle worker. Whatever picture they had in their minds about the Messiah – Jesus didn’t measure up to the image they had created. However, had they truly studied the Scriptures, they would have seen that the Messiah was living among them.

On the alert for His second coming

Now, centuries later, we’ve fallen into the same expectation – or rather lack of expectation. Even Paul and the other disciples expected Jesus to return any day following His ascension into Heaven. But Jesus hasn’t returned yet and we’ve lost the expectation of His return. We are not on the alert – watching for His return. We live the way we want to and many of us are going to be caught unaware. What will you be doing the moment Jesus returns? Will you be ashamed or joyful? Will you be ready or left behind?

Be alert: We don’t know when He is coming

The people did not know when He would arrive at His birth and we today do not know when He will come again. In fact, the Bible tells us that even Jesus doesn’t know the moment when He will return again. Only God knows and Jesus simply waits for God to say, “Go get my children.” But since we do not know when He is coming, we need to be living on the alert, watching for His return. Since we don’t know when He will return for us, we need to live every moment as if He is coming in the next moment. If He came today, are you ready?

The Shoot and Root of Jesse

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation

In this week of Advent preparation, today we find the prophecy of Isaiah 11 that talks about a “shoot and root of Jesse that will bear fruit and stand as a signal for the people and his resting place will be glorious. It is a prophecy about Jesus who will come from the line of Jesse and He will have a kingdom of life and peace for those who believe in Him. Isaiah’s prophecy says:

Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. His delight will be in the fear of the Lord.

He will not judge by what He sees with His eyes, He will not execute justice by what He hears with His ears, but He will judge the poor righteously and execute justice for the oppressed of the land. He will strike the land with discipline from His mouth, and He will kill the wicked with a command from His lips. Righteousness will be a belt around His loins; faithfulness will be a belt around His waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the goat. The calf, the young lion, and the fatling will be together, and a child will lead them. The cow and the bear will graze, their young ones will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. An infant will play beside the cobra’s pit, and a toddler will put his hand into a snake’s den. None will harm or destroy another on My entire holy mountain, for the land will be as full of the knowledge of the Lord as the sea is filled with water. On that day the root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His resting place will be glorious.

A Root and Shoot of Jesse, but Who is Jesse?

Jesse isn’t mentioned often in the Bible, but every time he appears in the pages of God’s Word, there is significance to what we learn about him. For example, we learn that he is the Father of King David and so all the kings of Israel who follow after David are descendants of Jesse. Israel was ruled by kings for approximately 400 years, but due to sin and turning their backs on God and His covenant with them, they were conquered and sent in exile, ending the reign of kings actively ruling in Jerusalem. First, Babylon defeated Judah, the Persia defeated Babylon. Then later Greece became the ruling power and then finally, by the time of Jesus, Rome held the power. So the royal line of kings ended and appeared to be dead.

A dead stump

Let’s say that a tree in your yard had to be cut down. It may, at one time, have been a beautiful tree with flowering buds and it provided a shade for your children to play under its branches. Birds enjoyed making their nests in it and squirrels romped and played in its branches. But then it got a disease, and it branches died and you had to cut it down. Nothing remains now but a dead stump. But years later, your children are grown and now there are grandchildren playing in the yard and you notice that a living shoot is springing up from that dead stump and over the years, a new and beautiful tree once again graces your yard – and this one is even greater and more glorious than the previous one.

That is exactly what the prophet Isaiah was saying in these verses. The line of kings was as dead as the stump of the tree, but a sprout would rise up from the stump and the sprout would be Jesus. But for Jesus to have been a shoot and root of Jesse, the physical, genealogical line had to continue – and it did after almost 600 years of no Davidic king actively ruling, after 600 years of foreign domination – a shoot is born on a silent, holy night in a stable and laid in a lowly manger.

When all hope is lost a new shoot springs up

After 600 years, one would think all hope of Isaiah’s prophecy being fulfilled was lost. But God likes to show up in the moments when all hope is lost. He likes bringing life out of death and that will be the hallmark of Jesus’ life: life out of death, when it looks like all hope has been lost. As Jesus hung, nailed to a cross, and breathed His last breath, those who believed that He was the promised Messiah, probably felt like all hope was lost. Maybe they felt silly for believing Him. His death crushed their hopes. But when they thought it was all over, little did they know it was just the beginning. The beginning of life – not death.

The Root and Shoot of Jesse will be a Tree of Life

Jesus paid the price for our sins. Paul wrote that the “wages of sin is death.” Each one of us must pay that wages of sin, but Jesus stepped in and paid the wages for us. He died in our place. When we come to Him by faith, acknowledging Him as the only Son of God who died and rose again, and asking him to forgive our sins and be our Savior, then His death opens the way to eternal life for us. This shoot of Jesse, then becomes the shoot in our tree of life.

Shoot and root of Jesse

Not only is Jesus the shoot of Jesse, but He is also the root of Jesse. In other words, Jesus is the origin of the whole Davidic line, including Jesse. Jesus is not only the descendant of David, but He is also David’s Lord, both as the same time. Son of David and Son of God – Jesus is fully 100% man and 100% God. Jesus, who died on the cross as king of the Jews and then rose again is the very Son of God who was with the Father at the beginning.

So why does Isaiah prophesy that this shoot and root is of “Jesse”? Why not say He will be a descendent of David, who is so much more well-known? In comparison, Jesse is an obscure person barely mentioned at all in the Bible. But when you look at David and his descendants who ruled after him, all of them fell short. So the prophesy goes back to Jesse – a generation before David – as if to say there will be a divine “restart” – a whole new and eternal king. A king even better than David.

As grand and glorious as David’s kingdom was, this new, eternal king will far surpass David’s kingdom. It will be a kingdom that bears good fruit. It will be a peaceable kingdom that includes not just the Jews, but also the Gentiles – and that’s good news for you and me because if you are not a Jew, then you are Gentile. So the eternal life that Jesus offers is for you and me, as well as the Jews.

Prophecy fulfilled and Second Coming

In Isaiah’s day, they prepared and waited for the coming of the Messiah and Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled with the birth of Jesus. Today, we prepare and wait for His second coming that will bring an even greater kingdom, the peaceable kingdom. A kingdom that is eternal, with no more sorrow or death, pain or sickness. A kingdom that is everlasting and will include all those who hope in Christ as their Savior. Those who believe in Him are the fruit that comes from the One who is both the shoot and root of Jesse – the Messiah – Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Prepare the Way

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation

What if someone famous that you admired was coming to your house today? What would you do to prepare and get ready? Who would you tell about it? Who would you invite? In Isaiah 40, the prophet Isaiah foretells about John the Baptist who would be the voice crying out, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” Isaiah wrote:

“A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert. Every valley will be lifted up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the uneven ground will become smooth and the rough places, a plain. And the glory of the Lord will appear, and all humanity together will see it,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Prepare the Way of the Lord

Whenever the President visits a city, the local police and the secret service work together to close down road, plot out a path, and create a way for him to reach his destination. In Isaiah’s day, if a king or dignitary was going to visit, the way would have to be prepared. This often meant repairing roads, removing fallen trees or other obstacles, and eliminating all detours so that there would be no barriers to the king’s arrival.

Prepare the way by Removing the obstacles

Isaiah tells us that in a similar way we are to “prepare the way for the LORD.” At Christmas we celebrate the coming of the King, so it’s important to prepare our hearts for his coming by removing the obstacles that stand between us and a right relationship with God. These obstacles can be sins, such as hatred, bitterness, anger, addictions, sexual sins, lies, or any other barrier that stands between you and the Lord. It could be things, hobbies, or people that you have made a higher priority in your life than God. Obstacles can be anything that controls your heart that doesn’t allow God to have control. It can be anything you have not surrendered to Him. And it can be any lack of faith you have for believing God.

Whatever barriers and obstacles you’ve allowed to be in the way prevents you from allowing the Lord to have complete and total Lordship of your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the areas that are obstacles and barriers to your relationship with God and the areas that you have not fully surrendered to Him. Repent and ask the Holy Spirit to help you remove these barriers and open the way for Christ to fully reign and rule in you.

Prepare the way by developing Godly ways

Preparing the way isn’t just removing what is in the way, but its also fixing what’s wrong. We do this by developing Godly ways, habits and practices. We don’t just need to develop them, but we also need to live them out consistently. Without studying, memorizing, and applying God’s instructions to us that we find in His Word, we will not be able to develop Godly ways. Certainly we can learn Godly ways by going to church, but growing in Christ comes from hiding God’s Word in our heart, asking the Holy Spirit to “search me and know my thoughts,” and being doers of the Word.

Prepare the way by living Godly ways

All around us the world watches us. They want to know what is different about us. We can prepare the way for Jesus to come into the heart of someone else by living a life that honors and glorifies God in our words and actions. As we pray for those who are lost or those who have wandered away from God, we prepare a way for for Jesus to enter their lives or draw them back to Him. We can witness to them by telling them what God has done for us or inviting them to church.

Prepare a way to your own heart

Often times, we think we’re doing pretty good as we compare ourselves to the world, but none of us are without sin and God is always working to grow and develop our faith. So we need to make sure we are allowing the Holy Spirit to convict us and clean out the areas of sin so that God has a path to work in our lives the way that desires.

How do you need to prepare a way?

As we make preparation for the Christmas season this year, be brave enough to spend time alone with the Holy Spirit and ask Him how you need to prepare a way for Christ – whether that’s clearing out obstacles, developing Godly habits, living Godly ways, or making a path for God to grow your faith.
