Who is in Charge?

Abbott and Costello

If someone were observing your family, would they be left asking “who’s in charge?” In 1938, Abbott and Costello performed on a radio show a comedy skit entitled, “Who’s on First?” Most of us have seen or at least heard the skit and chuckled along with it. However, in our homes, it isn’t quite so funny when we don’t know our roles and where we belong within the family unit. God ordained order within the home to ensure healthy functioning of the family unit. But when we don’t follow God’s plan for the family, both outsiders and members of the family are left wondering who’s in charge.

kid in charge

When the kids are in charge

We’ve all seen those homes where the kids rule the nest. They are loud, defiant, rude, stubborn and disobedient. They talk back, stick their tongue out, cross their arms and dig in their heels and refuse to budge. The parents have no control whatsoever. Leonard Sax, author of “The Collapse of Parenting” and a family physician and psychologist for 27 years, says that American families are facing a crises of authority, because now the kids are in charge. As a result, children are disrespectful to their parents, to one another and to themselves.”

When Momma’s in charge

husband wont lead

Then there are homes where mom is in control. Dad works all day then comes home to pick up the paper or watch television or play a video game leaving mom to deal with the kids, clean the house, cook, do the laundry and whatever else might be going on. She makes all the major decisions for the family and dad just goes along with the plan. The kids might be more in line (sometimes), but it still is not a home that honors and glorifies God.

Daddy’s in charge- but he’s controlling

Another type of home finds the husband in control, but the wrong kind of control. He’s the one the wife and kids are scared of. He rules with an iron fist and you go along with his way or pay the consequences. He’s controlling, manipulating, abusive physically, emotionally, verbally, and maybe even sexually or financially.

Daddy’s in charge- He’s good, but not God honoring

However, not every husband who takes the lead role in his family is abusive. He may be morally good and protective of his family. He provides for them and helps parent the children. He’s a good husband and father. Yet even this home is not honoring God.

Who then should be in charge in the home? I’m glad you asked. 1 Corinthians 11:3 has the answer. Paul writes to the church at Corinth these words:

“I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

The key: Everyone submits to someone

The principle behind Paul’s words is submission. Everyone submits to someone, except God. God ordained submission so that the homes would run smoothly. Otherwise, we’d have nothing but chaos, anger, bitterness, competiveness, and arguing. If you notice the chain in Paul’s writing, the woman seems to be at the bottom of the chain of command so let me say that submission is NOT surrender, withdrawal, or apathy. It does not mean that we girls are inferior.

When God created men and women, he made us in his image and that makes males and females on equal ground. One is not better than the other. Both have equal value in God’s eyes. Instead, submission is more about a mutual commitment and cooperation. There is no need for women to compete with men or men to compete with women. God expects men and women to submit as equals. We submit by choice as we willingly serve God in the roles he designed for us. However, for a home to function, someone has to be in charge and when the man does not fulfill his God-given responsibility, many times wives must step in and serve her role and his. So then, what is the husband’s role?

The Man who is in charge and honors God

Then man who is in charge of his home and does so in a way that honors God is what we call a spiritual leader. He is a man who submit his life to God, seeks His guidance as He leads his family ever closer to God. Let’s look at some of the characteristics of the man who is in charge at home and honors God.

spiritual leader

Husbands who are spiritual leaders lead through sacrificial love

Ephesians 5:33 says that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. How did Christ demonstrate His love? He gave his life. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.(Romans 5:8) Even when we were still covered in sin, at our absolute worst, vile, repulsive, Christ loved us enough to die for us.

Sacrificial love can also been putting her needs and desires above your own. It means doing the things you don’t enjoy doing as an acts of selfless love. Sacrificial love is all about serving and giving to your wife. (Ladies, you should not love your husbands any less…just saying!) Husbands, if you are to love your wives as Christ loved the church, then you need to make sure you have experienced that love for yourself. You can’t give away what you have not yet received.

Husbands who are spiritual leaders lead their families to Christ

Husbands should also lead their families to Christ. God has given you the responsibility to be a spiritual leader in your home. After all, God’s purpose for marriage is to make us more like Christ. Christ often referred to the Church as is bride. So as Christians, our marriage should be a picture of Christ and the Church. As such, the head of the husband is Christ and he should be your #1 priority. Your 2nd priority should be your wife and your marriage. Your third priority should be your children. Then your job and providing for your family. Do your priorities align with these? To the outside world, would they say your priorities are in this order?

Husbands who are spiritual leaders have an intimate, thriving relationship with Christ

There is no way you can lead you family the way God has called you to if you do not have an intimate, thriving, growing relationship with Christ. Do a self-examination right now. Where are your priorities? What do you give them most time and attention to? What do you nurture, develop, and look forward to everyday? If your priorities are out of order, what do you need to do to get them where they belong? What commitments do you need to make? Do you have any idols that you need to get rid of? You can’t lead your family to Christ if you’re still trying to get there yourself.

The home that operates as God designed it

Take a moment to imagine what a home would look like if it operated in the way God designed it. How does that look different than what your family looks like now? What changes need to happen? What would it take for your wife to trust you enough that she could willingly step back and trust you to lead your family?

Here is what she needs:

  • Your wife needs to know that you are daily seeking wisdom from God in every decision you make.
  • She needs to know that you are opening discussing decision with her, listening to her input and genuinely considering her opinions.
  • She needs to know that the decisions you make are for the good of the family and not for your own good.
  • Your wife needs to know that she can rely on you, depend on you and that you would not do anything that would knowingly bring harm to the family.
  • She needs to know that God is the first priority in your life and she is second.
  • She needs to know that you are loyal and committed to her.

But gals…you are not off the hook either. In order for men to stand up and lead they need something from you:

  • Your guy needs to know that your first priority is Christ and he is your second.
  • He needs to know you trust him in the decisions he makes
  • Your husband needs your encouragement
  • He needs you to pray for him
  • If he does make a mistake, remember he’s human and we all make mistakes. Don’t bring him down or wag your finger with all the “I told you so” comments. Instead, hug him and tell him you love him then dig in and fix it together.
  • He needs your support
  • He needs your respect

Who’s in Charge?

Take some time ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the ways you are living outside your God-given roles. Ladies, do you need to willingly and cooperatively submit as an equal to your husband? Men, do you need to submit to Christ? Are you leading your family in the way God intended? What are your priorities? Are you spending time in the Word of God and prayer, ever seeking guidance from God as to the way you should lead your family? What can you do right now that will help you submit to who’s in charge?

Priorities are Your Treasure

Priorities identify Your Treasure

Country Music Artist Brad Paisley has a song entitled, I’m Gonna Miss Her. It’s sort of a funny song, but really it’s more sad and says much about his priorities. His priorities tell us where his treasure is. The lyrics are:

Well I love her
And I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin’ hole today
She’d be packin’ all her things
And she’d be gone by noon   Well I’m gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I’m on this lake shore
And I’m sittin’ in the sun
I’m sure it’ll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I’ve got a bite

Now there’s a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
But that water’s right
And the weather’s perfect
No tellin’ what I might catch today So I’m gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I’m on this lake shore
And I’m sittin’ in the sun
I’m sure it’ll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
Yeah, I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, another bite Yeah, I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I’ve got a bite*

Priorities identify your relationships

For the guy in this song, his treasure can be found out on the boat fishing…not with her. He can tell her he loves her, but would she believe him? Even if she did, she’d be inclined to believe that he loved fishing more. There is nothing wrong with fishing…or even loving fishing, if that’s your “thing.” There isn’t anything wrong with any hobby you might love to do. But it is wrong to put those hobbies before the relationships we share with people and God.

What if we swapped the word “her” in the lyrics and replaced it with “God?” The same is true with God. You can tell God (and everyone else) you love Him, but what’s your heart attitude on Sunday morning when it’s time to go to church? Are you eager to go and spend time with him? How much time do you spend reading God’s message, the Bible? How much time do you spend talking with Him in prayer? What’s your attitude when the offering plate is passed? How eager are you to tell others about Jesus and what’s He’s done for you?

Your heart belongs to what you treasure

When our priorities are out of whack, it’s hard for people to believe you care about them and it’s hard for God to accept it too. Anytime our words say one thing but our actions say something else, our words will not be believed. Jesus taught us that your heart truly belongs to what it most treasures.

Out of order priorities will identify idols

Since a disciple or follower of Jesus is to love God with all his heart (Deuteronomy 6:5), love for any material possessions, hobbies, games, sports, jobs, money, or anything else is a subtle form of idolatry. Colossians 3:5 says, “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desires, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” The command  to “put to death” refers to the practical outworking of seeking and thinking about heavenly things. Paul’s list in this verse sums up five categories of earthly vices that can become idols when they become more important to us than God.

What are your priorities?

What would be the treasure of your heart? Are there any priorities you need to get back in control so that the greatest treasure of your heart is God? If God has revealed any priorities that are out of order or even an idol in your life, would you right now come humbly before God, confess it and set your priorities in the right order?

453542: Humility Humility

By Andrew Murray / Aneko Press

639405: Humility & Absolute Surrender Humility & Absolute Surrender

By Andrew Murray / Hendrickson Publishers

For over a century countless readers have found in Andrew Murray a trustworthy guide to the deeper Christian life. As a pastor, evangelist, educator, and writer driven by concern for the spiritual guidance of new converts–and for revival in long-time believers–Murray penned some of the most enduring devotional classics of Christian literature. Though he ministered in a deeply-divided nation, his vision seemed blind to race, class, or political persuasion. And from a remote corner of South Africa, his preaching, teaching, and writing would eventually fuel spiritual awakening with a worldwide impact.

This edition pairs Humility and Absolute Surrender in one volume. Together these classics reflect Murray’s longing for a closer walk with Christ, and call us to a life of holiness and virtue, empowered not by our own strength but by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Hardcover.

25600: Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness, Updated Edition Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness, Updated Edition

By Andrew Murray / Bethany House

When Jesus “made himself nothing … taking the nature of a servant,” He modeled for all believers true humility. Murray calls this “our true nobility” and “the distinguishing feature of discipleship.” In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ’s life, underscoring the utmost need for humility—as opposed to pride—in the Christian’s life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written, this edition has been edited for today’s reader.

904379: From Pride to Humility: A Biblical Perspective From Pride to Humility: A Biblical Perspective

By Stuart Scott / Focus Publishing

God has given us a model to follow, in order to be what he wants us to be, and that model is the person Jesus Christ. We must first want to glorify God with our lives and realize that it is Christ likeness that will help us to do that. The humility of Jesus Christ is his most stunning attribute, and the sin of pride is probably the most detestable to God. Pride is a form of self-worship and is often manifested in the most subtle ways.

Contained in this small volume is an exhaustive list of manifestations of pride, which we must put-off, followed by the challenging attributes of humility, which Christians can put on through the spirit.

John 4:34. Finishing His Work

May 13 John 4 34

Jesus had just had the encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. If we back up to the beginning of chapter 4 in John’s gospel, we find the Pharisees had heard that Jesus and his disciples were making and baptizing more disciples than John so He left Judea to go to Galilee, but he had to go through Samaria on His way for His destined meeting with the woman at the well. In verse five we find that Jesus was weary from His journey, so He sat by the well, positioning Himself in the exact location for His destined meeting. The disciples don’t arrive on the scene until verse 27, marveling that He is talking with a Samaritan woman. In verse 31, they demonstrate their concern for Jesus and encourage Him to eat something. His response was, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” The disciples totally miss what Jesus is talking about and wonder amongst themselves who could have brought Him something to eat. So Jesus explains – “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” What was the work that Jesus was sent to do? Luke 19:10 tells us, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.” Ultimately, for Jesus, that meant dying on a cross and rising again, but for this day, it meant talking to an outcast Samaritan woman who would bring her entire village to Jesus.

As Christians, each one of us has been given the same task: to seek and to save that which is lost and to make disciples. Jesus’ last words to the church before He ascended into heaven were, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20, HCSB). We all might do that in a different way. Some preach, some write books, some teach a small group, some tell coworkers, friends, and family about Jesus, some leave a gospel tract along with a tip at a restaurant, and some sing praise and worship songs. None of us are saved to sit in a pew. As long as we are still on earth, we have a task, an assignment to do. What assignment have you been given?

As Christians, each one of us has been given the same task as Jesus: to seek and to save that which is lost and to make disciples. –click to tweet

Jesus was committed to His task all the way to the cross. How committed are you? Jesus set His priorities by what His Father wanted Him to do. What do your priorities look like? Jesus was willing to go to Samaria, even though the devout, strict Jews avoided it due to fear of being defiled if they went through it. Instead, they would bypass Samaria and take much longer route around it just to avoid it. But God gave Jesus an assignment in Samaria – and He obediently went and won an entire village to belief in Him. Are you willing to go the places no one else will go?

Jesus was committed all the way to the cross. He set His priorities and went where others wouldn’t go – even for the sake of one outcast woman. How committed are you? What do your priorities look like? Will you go where no one else will? –click to tweet

For some who work in ministry, the question of commitment has not been about priorities or willingness – it is more about how much ministry takes out of person. Ministry is hard work. Not just because the task is hard, but also because people in ministry often invest themselves emotionally into the lives the people to whom they minister. If people in ministry do not practice self-care, they risk burnout and/or compassion fatigue. If this is you, then God is asking you, “Will you finish the work to which you have been called?” For Jesus it wasn’t enough just to do the work His Father sent Him to do – He also had to finish it. Imagine for a moment if Jesus developed burnout and compassion fatigue. If anyone ever deserved a burnout and compassion fatigue moment, it was Jesus! But if Jesus sat down one day and said, “I’m too tired to go on. I think I’ll quit this business of working out everyone’s salvation.” Where would that leave us today? Dear person in the ministry – pastor, music minister, small group leader, deacon, conference speaker, children’s worker, nursery worker, youth pastor…whatever your ministry field is – what if you sit down and say, “I’m too tired to go on. I think I’ll quit.” How many people would die without Christ as Savior because you quit? Like Jesus, it isn’t enough that we do the will of God – we must finish the task to which we have been called.

If Jesus had not finished His task, none of us would have the hope of salvation. How many people might die without Christ if you do not finish the task to which God has called you? –click to tweet

Matthew 6:21

Jan 6 Mathew 6 21

Country Music Artist Brad Paisley has a song entitled, I’m Gonna Miss Her. It’s sort of a funny song, but really it’s more sad. The lyrics are:

Well I love her
And I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin’ hole today
She’d be packin’ all her things
And she’d be gone by noon
Well I’m gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I’m on this lake shore
And I’m sittin’ in the sun
I’m sure it’ll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I’ve got a bite
Now there’s a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
But that water’s right
And the weather’s perfect
No tellin’ what I might catch today
So I’m gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I’m on this lake shore
And I’m sittin’ in the sun
I’m sure it’ll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
Yeah, I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, another bite
Yeah, I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I’ve got a bite*
His treasure can be found out on the boat fishing…not with her.
You can tell God (and everyone else) you love Him, but what’s your attitude come Sunday morning when it’s time to go to church? Are you eager to go and spend time with him? How much time do you spend reading God’s message, the Bible? How much time do you spend talking with Him in prayer? What’s your attitude when the offering plate is passed? How eager are you to tell others about Jesus and what’s He’s done for you?
When our priorities are out of whack, it’s hard for people to believe you care about them and it’s hard for God to accept it too. Anytime our words say one thing but our actions say something else, our words will not be believed. Jesus taught us that your heart truly belongs to what it most treasures. Since a disciple or follower of Jesus is to love God with all his heart, love for any material possessions, hobbies, games, sports, jobs, money, or anything else is a subtle form of idolatry. Colossians 3:5 says, “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desires, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” The command  to “put to death” refers to the practical outworking of seeking and thinking about heavenly things. Paul list in this verse sums up five categories of earthly vices that can become idols when they become more important to us than God.
What would be the treasure of your heart? Are there any priorities you need to get back in control so that the greatest treasure of your heart is God?
