Proverbs 28:13

Proverbs 28 13

In Proverbs 17:9, Solomon writes that it is a good thing to conceal someone else’s sins, but in 28:13, he says attempting to cover up our own sins is not good. In fact, he says that the person who covers up their sins will not prosper. You might be able to cover up your sins from others finding you, but you’ll never cover them up for God who sees all and knows all. In Proverbs 15:3, we find that the “eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” David wrote in Psalm 139:1-4, 7-12:

Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are away of all my way. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord…. Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hid me, and the light around me will be night” — even the darkness is not dark to You. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to You.

There is just no getting around God. He not only sees everything we do, but He knows our thoughts before they become action or words. He knows our motivations and He knows when we are truly sorry and repentant.

Since it is impossible to cover up our sins to God, there is no reason that we should not09 15 ctt confess them. But notice that confessing alone is not enough to find mercy for our sins. We also must forsake them. We must leave them at the altar of confession and not pick them back up again. A truly repentant heart will forsake the sin – meaning that a person who has repented of a sin will turn away from it, go in a completely different direction and do all they can to not do that sin again. However, if they keep repeating the sin over and over, they probably have not yet reach a place of true repentance. Because God know our hearts and motivations, He already knows if we are truly sorry or not – but when we are, we will find both mercy and forgiveness.

What sin have you been trying to cover up? Today is a good day to confess it to God and repent so that you can find forgiveness and mercy.
