Are There a Few Faithful Left?

The Faithful are MIA

Do you ever feel as if the faithful Christians have disappeared? I mean, not like in the rapture – but just from active duty. It’s like Christians are comfortable and content to sit on the sidelines within the comfortable walls of their churches while the world we live in is on its way to hell. It feels as if in the spiritual battle that Satan is gaining grounds and winning victories and taking over our world. The faithful Christians are MIA and it’s showing across the globe. Where are the faithful Christians?

The statistics tells us the Faithful are MIA

Every time a push notification comes through on my phone from our local news station, it seems like another story about a murder, or a mass shooting, or an act of terror, or a story about racial issues, or this pandemic that has totally knocked our world for a loop. On July 6, 2020 the New York Times posted that murder in the US is up 16% in 25 of America’s largest cities compared to this time last year. (See the full article here). Certainly this year has been a year like no other in my lifetime. When things like a world-wide pandemic hits, it sets everyone on edge and stress it high. And that is breeding-grounds for crime. The NY Times article did report that other crimes have decreased but you can’t undo murder. Where are the faithful Christians?

Our children tell us the Faithful are MIA

On top of keeping this ministry going, I also work in social work and the stories I hear that cause kids to come into the foster care system are heartbreaking and gut wrenching. These kids, whether newborn or about to age out of the system, live from one trauma to another. They are hurting, angry, and desperate to be loved. But for anyone who knows anything about trauma in kids, trauma is displayed in behaviors and these kids often end up moving from one home to another. And every time they move, it’s another trauma in the trauma stories. Where are the faithful Christians?

The Faithful around the globe are MIA

Then there are stories about countries against countries. Or religion against religion. Race against race. There is so much anger and hatred in our world and it is only getting worse. Our world is divided and it is broken. Where are the faithful Christians!?

Help, Lord!

The more stories I see, the more I feel like crying out to God like David did and say, “HELP! Lord there are no more faithful ones willing to fight for you. The Godly people have disappeared from the human race.” In counseling, we are trained to help people recognize when they use words such as “all,” “always,” “never” or “everyone” and then re-frame those statements into a more realistic statement. In other words, saying you’ll never get promoted is probably unlikely if you are a hard worker, dependable, and reliable. A more accurate statement might be, “I didn’t get the promotion this time, but I will keep doing my best and try again next time.”

If David were sitting in a counselor’s office, his counselor might try the same tactic with him. It certainly feels like all the Godly people have disappeared, but then I look at the people I do ministry every day, or the people that I look up to in ministry – those I consider my mentors in the faith, and I’m reminded not all of them have disappeared.

Lord, are there at least 10 righteous?

When God stopped by to visit Abraham, He let Abraham in on His plans for Sodom and Gomorrah. These two cities were so full of sin that the stench of sin reached as high as heaven an wafted under the nose of God. It wasn’t that God wasn’t aware and all of sudden He got a whiff of the scent of sin. He knew – He just finally had enough and the two cities were about to be destroyed with fire and brimstone. But Lot lived there and Lot was Abraham’s nephew.

Abraham barters with God

So when Abraham heard God’s plans, he started this series of questions with God. “God,” Abraham said, “You’re righteous. You wouldn’t destroy the good with the bad would you? If there are just 50 righteous people in the city, would you destroy it then?” God replied that he would spare the cities if He found 50 righteous. Well Abraham must have stopped and thought “Wait, this is Sodom and Gomorrah…hummm.” He then says, “Well, God, what if there are 40 righteous?” God then again says He would spare the cities for the 40. Abraham continues to barter with God. “What if there are 30?” “Well, God, what if there are 20?” “What if there are 10?” Each time God’s response was the same. And….God destroyed the cities. So there were not even 10 righteous people in the cities.

Sometimes, I feel like Abraham and want to say, “God are there even 10 righteous people in America?”

Will the faithful Christian please stand up?

But not all the faithful Christians have disappeared. And I’m sure we have more than just 10 in our nation. But it is passed time for us to step up and be the Church. Jesus called us to be salt and light in the world and it’s time we start doing so. We need to bring people to the Living Water and the Bread of Life. We need to love our neighbors as we love ourselves – but even more we need to love them like Jesus loves them, regardless of race, religion, past life or present.

It’s Roll Call for the Faithful ones

Where are you, faithful ones? It’s roll call. It is time to report for active duty. We can no longer afford to sit in the comfort of our beautiful church buildings. It’s time for us to get out into the world and be the CHURCH. We need to step out, stand up for Jesus. We – the faithful ones – the ones called by God’s name – must come boldly before our God, seeking His face, humbly repenting before Him and asking Him to sweep across our land in a revival that turns this nation and our world back to God.  Would you invest a few moments of your time right now and pray for a revival here in America or whatever country you live in?

It’s time for us to stop sitting in the comfort of our church buildings and get out into the world and be the Church. We need to step out, stand up for Jesus. We need to humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face, and turn from our wicked ways and ask God to send our revival to our nation.

Proverbs 31: 26-27. What comes out of your mouth?

by Julia Bruce

Proverbs 31 26-27

Being a wife and mom can be one of the most rewarding experiences a woman could know — it can also be one of the most hardest and exasperating experiences. A woman who is caring for her home and family in a manner that honors God, is always watching over every activity and she is never idle. At times, though, life gets completely crazy and it feels like if just one more thing happens that last nerve that is already stretched to the breaking point will snap. In the moments that you feel overwhelmed, exhausted as you work on the third load of laundry (only to find your husband’s socks on the floor that missed the last load), change the baby’s diaper for the sixth time in a single hour because her tummy is upset and you were up all night with her crying…all while trying to figure out how to make the groceries last to the next pay day and fixing dinner with the fussy baby on your hip — what words come out of your mouth?

In Proverbs 31:10-31, Solomon writes about the “capable wife” and describes her characteristics. In verse 26, he writes, “whenever she opens her mouth, words of wisdom and loving instruction are on her tongue.” So in the crazy moments of life, what words come out of your mouth? Jesus said in Matthew 12:34 that “the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” In other words, the words we speak will reveal the true nature of our heart. (click to tweet) For Solomon, the “capable wife” speaks out of wisdom and kindness. But when life get’s crazy and we’ve not had enough sleep, speaking out of wisdom and kindness can be very difficult. In these moments, it can be09 16 the pause helpful to practice “the pause.” This simply means that before we let any words pass through our mouth, we take a deep breath in, hold it for a few seconds, and slowly let it out. During that process, you can send up a “mayday prayer” – a short, simple, quick prayer that is a cry for help. Maybe your mayday prayer is, “Lord! Give me strength!” or “Lord, let my words honor you.” or just simply, “Lord! Help!” David wrote in Psalm 121, “Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” So no matter how cray life gets, remember where your help comes from. Then as you exhale, think about the words you will say before they come out of your mouth and make sure they are loving, full of wisdom and kindness – then they will be words that honor God.
